The chance of a snowy holiday season in most American cities is practically impossible this year, so any festive atmosphere to be enjoyed will have to be the imaginary sort. Luckily, there are books for that.
The Complete Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen
Any reader of fairy tales knows Andersen’s responsible for the snowy scenes in "The Snow Queen", the story of children Kai and Gerda, who must face the goddess-like woman who controls all snowflakes after Kai is kidnapped.
Family Life by Akhil Sharma
It’s a beautiful yet tragic novel about an Indian family immigrating to America, only to face entirely new hardships. Sharma’s novel isn’t entirely set in the wintertime, but his poetic descriptions of winter weather as lovely yet isolating make it a great choice for a December read.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Go ahead and give up movie adaptation that has been produced recently and read or re-read the classic itself. You know the story: a scientist driven by his ambition discovers a method for creating life, and spends two years cobbling together a living creature, who later feels anger about him.
An American Childhood by Annie Dillard
Dillard’s first book is, as its title suggests, about her change from being a self-centered child to being an adult more concerned with the world around her than with her own personal concerns. Her parents are key figures in the story. One famous scene takes place during what the author calls “a big snow” in 1950.

More than 25 years ago, Saroo Brierley was one of many poor children in rural India. One day, he played with his brother along the rail line and fell asleep. When he woke up, finding himself alone, the 4-year-old decided his brother might be on the train he saw in front of him—so he got on.
That train took him across the country to a totally strange city, where he did not speak the language. He lived on the streets, and then in an orphanage(孤儿院). There, he was adopted by an Australian family and flown to Tasmania.
As he writes in his new book, A Long Way Home, Brierley couldn’t help but wonder about his hometown back in India. He remembered landmarks, but since he didn’t know his town’s name, finding a small neighborhood in a vast country seemed to be impossible.
Then he found Google Earth—a digital mapping program. He spent years searching for his hometown in the program’s satellite pictures. In 2011, he came across something familiar. He studied it and realized he was looking at a town’s central business district from a bird’s-eye view. He thought, “On the right-band side you should see the three-platform train station”—and there it was. “And on the left-hand side you should see a big fountain”—and there it was.
Everything just started to match.
When he stood in front of the house where he grew up as a child, he saw a lady standing in the entrance. “There’s something about me,” he thought—and it took him a few seconds, but he finally remembered what she used to look like.
“My mother looked so much shorter than I remembered. But she came forth and walked forward, and I walked forward, and my feelings and tears and the chemical in my brain, you know, it was like a nuclear fusion(核聚变). I just didn’t know what to say, because I never thought seeing my mother would ever come true. And here I am, standing in front of her.”
4.Why was Brierley separated from his family about 25 years ago?
A.He was taken away by a foreigner. B.He was adopted by an Australian family.
C.He got on a train by mistake. D.He got lost while playing in the street.
5.How did Brierley find his hometown?
A.By analyzing old pictures. B.By studying digital maps.
C.By spreading his story via his book. D.By travelling all around India.
6.What does Brierley mainly talk about in the last paragraph?
A.His memory of his hometown. B.His love for his mother.
C.His long way back home. D.His reunion with his mother.
7.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Brierley’s mother grew shorter and weaker as she aged.
B.Brierley recognized his mother the moment he saw her.
C.Brierley once decided to give up searching for his hometown.
D.There were mixed feelings when Brierley saw his mother again.
Hip hop is a form of musical and artistic expression that started in urban (城市) areas in New York in the 1970s. The expression comes from joining together two words with special meanings. “Hip” means cool or current while “hop” refers to the style of dancing.
Kool Herc Campbell is considered very important in starting hip hop culture. He was from Jamaica and used the Jamaican tradition of poetry and speech over music. He started playing music and speaking poetry at outdoor basketball courts to give encouragement to the young dancers. This speech soon came to be known as “rapping”.
Then hip hop as a culture started to develop and spread throughout some areas of New York City. This culture featured graffiti (涂鸦) art as well as its own unique style and music. Artists and rap musicians came to consider hip hop as a new urban culture. As it grew in popularity, newspapers and magazines started reporting about it.
In the early 1980s, bands and musicians started experimenting with electronic instruments to make a new sound. Hip hop was starting to mature (成熟) as the art of making music in new ways spread. Rap artists also started to change their style. Many rappers talked about urban problems, showing their disappointment in drugs, unemployment, and unfair treatment by authorities such as the police.
Recently, hip hop has spread globally. In Europe, it has also become a way for many young people to express their anger at social problems and environmental issues. In many parts of Asia, hip hop has been adopted as a form of music for business, produced only with consumers in mind. Many people believe that this is not “real” hip hop music and argue that many countries have simply borrowed the “look” and “sound” of hip hop without really understanding the culture behind it.
8.Why does the writer introduce Kool Herc Campbell?
A.To inform us that he was the founder of hip hop.
B.To tell us how he became a world-famous singer.
C.To prove that he combined music with American poetry.
D.To explain why he inspired artists to explore urban culture.
9.What did the early US hip hop culture focus on?
A.Solving urban problems.
B.Developing its unique style.
C.Spreading around the world.
D.Using advanced musical instruments.
10.What concerns the author as hip hop spreads globally?
A.The culture behind it has changed.
B.It can easily cause negative emotions.
C.It sounds totally different from its origin.
D.Some people use it for improper purposes.
11.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Hip Hop around the World
B.The Rise and Spread of Hip Hop
C.Hip Hop: The Most Popular Art Form
D.Kool Herc Campbell: The Father of Hip Hop
One morning when I was 15, I got out of bed, stood up, and noticed something wasn’t right. I had a sharp pain in my back and down my leg. Within a year, I had three nerve root injections (神经根注射) and an operation on my back. But the pain remained.
After that, everything began to collapse around me. My grades fell quickly and school became even harder than it had been before. However, like my other classmates, I had two arms, two legs and I could walk downstairs. Therefore to others that didn’t seem to exist. But sometimes I just couldn’t stand it and I had to stay in bed rather than attend school, missing a lot of my education.
What was difficult was that I fell into a rather unclear category. I struggled to use the term “disability” and, quite honestly, I still didn’t know if I should. No one had given me the green light. I never took up the designated seats on the bus: the pain of standing was often less than feeling judged for sitting. There was nothing wrong with me. But I worried about people taking a dim view. I knew this happened because on occasion I’d even caught myself looking down on some seemingly able-bodied shoppers filling those sacred seats and thinking, “What are they doing? They look fine!”
It wasn’t until 2019 that my partner and I went to the cinema to see Pedro Almodóvar’s film Pain and Glory. There was an animated series inspired by Almodóvar’s personal experiences with back conditions. It was shocking. He captured them all — the nerve pain and the back pain and the visuals were unbelievably accurate. I whispered, “That’s what it’s like!” Then I couldn’t help bursting into tears.
Navigating a world where people can’t see your pain is upsetting and lonely. Of course, people can’t see the invisible, but try listening, being patient and giving people the benefit of the doubt. They certainly don’t make the pain go away. But they can make moving around in this world a little easier to bear.
12.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The physical pain.
B.The author’s decline in grades.
C.The fierce competition at school.
D.The author’s being absent from school.
13.What made the author think things got hard for him?
A.That he couldn’t get a seat on the bus.
B.That he wasn’t able to accept his disability.
C.That he was often laughed at by able-bodied people.
D.That he would be measured by the standards of a healthy man.
14.Why was the author in tears after seeing the film?
A.It helped him know well about his illness.
B.It reminded him of his similar feelings.
C.He realized his partner’s love for him.
D.He was amazed at the actor’s outstanding skill.
15.What conclusion can be drawn from the last paragraph?
A.Keeping positive makes life easy.
B.People in trouble should help each other.
C.People should learn to adapt to the challenges.
D.Being understood helps ease our painful condition.

One day, a man in a nice suit who seemed to have a respectable job went into a restaurant after the busy work in the evening, with a little tiredness on his face. “What a busy day!” he said to himself in a low voice. He sat down at a table and ordered a big pizza at once in order to eat some food quickly and then go home.
After a little while, another man who looked homeless with worn-out clothes came into the restaurant and sat near the nice suit man with a smile on his face. The nice suit man didn’t give back a smile with respect, and nor did he cast a glance at the homeless man.
Ten minutes later, the pizza arrived and was put in the middle of the table. The nice suit man couldn’t wait to eat it, so he grabbed (吃) it without hesitation because of hunger. A few seconds later, the homeless man took a piece of the pizza and chewed (咀嚼) it slowly with a happy smile on his face. “I won’t be angry about this, because he is a homeless person. It won’t really matter if he doesn’t continue to eat my second piece of pizza,” the nice suit man thought.
Then the homeless man took the second piece and third piece during the next ten minutes with a very satisfied smile. The nice suit guy finally got angry and shouted, “Why don’t you order one by yourself? Why can’t you stop eating my pizza?” At the same time, the waiter came and held a pizza to the nice suit man, saying, “Sir, this one is yours and that one just now was this gentleman’s.” The nice suit man felt a little embarrassed and said to the homeless man, “Why didn’t you tell me the one just now was yours? I am sorry to have shouted at you.” The homeless man was still calm and in peace with a kind voice, “Because you looked hungry and I like to share my food with you.” The nice suit man felt ashamed and he decided to give his whole one to the homeless man.
Para. 1: But the homeless man said, “No, please don’t give it to me; share it with me please.”

1.D 2.A 3.D
The Complete Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen下第一句中 Any reader of fairy tales knows Andersen's responsible for the snowy scenes in "The Snow Queen" (读过童话的人都知道安徒生笔下的白雪公主)可知,Hans Christian Andersen 写了一本小说《白雪皇后》。故选D。
Go ahead and give up movie adaptation that has been produced recently and read or re-read the classic itself.
An American Childhood by Annie Dillard下第二句Her parents are key figures in the story.
The Complete Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen Any reader of fairy tales knows Andersen's responsible for the snowy scenes in "The Snow Queen" (读过童话的人都知道安徒生笔下的白雪公主)可知,Hans Christian Andersen写了一本小说《白雪皇后》。故选D。
4.C 5.B 6.D 7.D

根据第四段中“Then he found Google Earth—a digital mapping program. He spent years searching for his hometown in the program’s satellite pictures(然后他找到了谷歌地球——一个数字地图程序。他花了数年时间在该项目的卫星图片中寻找他的家乡)”可知,他是通过分析数字地图找到的家乡,故选择B项。
6.主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“I just didn’t know what to say, because I never thought seeing my mother would ever come true. And here I am, standing in front of her.(我只是不知道该说什么,因为我从没想过见到我母亲会成为现实。我就在这里,站在她面前。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是布尔利与母亲的重逢,故选择D 项。
7.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“she came forth and walked forward, and I walked forward, and my feelings and tears and the chemical in my brain, you know, it was like a nuclear fusion(核聚变).(她走上前去,我也走上前去,我的感觉、眼泪和大脑中的化学物质,就像核聚变一样)”可知,布尔利再次见到母亲时,心情复杂,故选择D项。

However, like my other classmates, I had two arms, two legs and I could walk downstairs.(我的成绩下降得很快,学习变得比以前更难了。 和第三段中“What was difficult was that I fell into a rather unclear category. I struggled to use the term “disability” and, quite honestly, I still didn’t know if I should. No one had given me the green light.(困难的是,我属于一个相当不清楚的类别。

I believe we will be able to solve our problems with the help of others.

47.Para. 1: But the homeless man said, “No, please don’t give it to me; share it with me please.” The nice suit man was touched by these sincere words from the homeless man in front of him and he felt the homeless man was rich for his spiritual world. That might be the reason why the homeless man was always having a smile on his face, not a fake smile but a genuine one from the bottom of his heart. The nice suit man said, “Sir, I hope you will be here tomorrow at this time. I am going home now because I have to finish the rest of the work.”
Para. 2: The next day, the nice suit man was on his way to visit the homeless man. “He is supposed to be in the restaurant,” the nice suit man thought. There was no doubt that the homeless man was in that restaurant again. When they saw each other they were smiling at the same time and the nice suit man said, “Today, I am going to share the food with you.” At this both of them smiled again, and then they talked like old friends, sharing interesting stuff they experienced or heard. At the end of that day’s “sharing”, the nice suit man gave a hug to the homeless man and then he realized what kindness and sharing meant in life.
