When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I looked to the east—the sky was becoming grey. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a dark path. There was nothing to see, but I knew it was there.
After about a mile, a stranger appeared beside the path. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he replied,” you’ll get there in five minutes.” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked carefully over them, but it was still too dark to see anything.
Suddenly, the rain stopped and the clouds cleared. The sun rose behind me and shone on the rocks. Far below me, the ground fell away and down to a river. I was looking across one of the wonders of the natural world—the Grand Canyon.
I looked down to the Colorado River, a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still would not reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. It was about fifteen miles away, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away for more than 200 miles. The Grand Canyon was not just big. It was huge!
I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself, “Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder of the natural world?” I certainly know the answer.
29.What does the word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.The dark path. B.The gate. C.The car. D.The Grand Canyon.
30.Why was there nothing to see?

B.To say how he feels about the natural world.
C.To tell an interesting story about the Grand Canyon.
D.To attract people to visit the Grand Canyon.

Paper cups, plastic bags and old newspapers. There are so many single-use things(一次性物品)that we throw away after using only once.
___①___ According to news website Quartz, we are now living in a “throw-away society”. Single-use has become a natural way of life and can be seen almost everywhere.
___②___ Every day, we see new memes (表情包), stories and Internet slang (网络俚语) on social media. With so many of them coming out all the time, the lifespan (寿命) of each becomes short ---- they become “singe-use online products”. Any parent can tell you that children have an ability to get into mischief(顽皮). But when they get into some supernatural(超自然的)trouble, they’ll need help to get things back to normal. Author Hélène Schweiger tells a story of finding magic in her book The Magic Pond.
The story begins with twins Danielka and Jirik, who sneak out(偷偷溜出)one night to look at the full moon. When they reach a pond, Jirik looks at the reflection of the moon on the water. All of a sudden, Jirik is turned into a frog!
Unsure of how to fix this, the twins turn to their mother, but she’s just as stumped (被难住的) as they are. Fortunately, an elf (精灵) is happy to help them, but they’ll have to work together to succeed.
The Magic Pond takes the reader on a mysterious journey. But even with the magical creatures(生物)that we meet throughout, it is the human family that carries the heart of the story. The twins argue and joke just like any pair of twins would. It’s clear that Danielka and Jirik share a close bond.
When it comes to imagination, the sky’s the limit(没有限制)to what kids can believe. Danielka and Jirik accept the magic they see without any doubt. Openness to new ideas help Jirik change back to his human form.
Hélène Schweiger reminds us that for all the trouble that children can get into, it’s a part of their development as they learn to understand the world around them. Childhood mischief is a necessary part of their childlike wonder, and in the end, their curiosity is a valuable part of what makes children’s imaginations so powerful.

D.Some unknown power turned one of them into a frog.
38.What do we know from the passage?
A.Being curious and open-minded helped the twins.
B.It is the twins’ imagination that creates the magical creatures.
C.The way the twins interact is different from real-life twins.
D.It takes the twins some time to believe in magic.

Do pretty school uniforms lead to early romance?
A technical secondary school in Nanjing planned to order Korean-style school uniforms for students, but parents didn’t agree because they believed that the new uniforms looked too good and would encourage early romances among the students.
    Parents
“My daughter was so excited about the Korean-style uniform, saying it’s her dream to wear mini-skirt to school every day,” a mom complained. “Girls also talk about how handsome the boys looked in the uniform! If the students wear such beautiful uniforms, how can they study well? I prefer the sports wear which makes me think of health and positive(积极的) thinking.”
    Students
The students are sorry about the school’s final decision. They think the sports wear uniforms make them look androgynous (难分性别).
They said the Korean-style uniform has many advantages such as raising interest in class and lifting confidence. It is also considered to be a good way to develop their sense of pride for the school and help then create good temperaments(气质).
As for romance, the students believe that love is love and has nothing to do with the uniform.
    School
“The plan to change the school uniform from sports wear has been cancelled,” Mr Lin, a teacher, told the interviewer.
“The students dislike the present uniform, most of the students prefer Korean style school uniforms. We know cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou have changed their sports wear school uniforms to more fashionable uniforms. However, we had to stop the plan because many parents are strongly against it. Some parents think it’s just a way for the school to make money, and others think the new uniforms will take students’ attention away from their studies,” Lin said.
When asked about the problems with early romance between students because of the more fashionable uniforms, Lin said he hadn’t considered it. He, however, agreed that the Korean-style uniform makes the students more attractive.
    Education department
“We don’t have a unified (统一的) standard for school uniforms. The schools can choose their own styles. Either sports wear or uniforms are OK,” an official said.
