Table tennis may not seem a reasonable choice for someone with no arms—but Ibrahim Hamadtou doesn’t believe in limits. The 48-year-old Egyptian Paralympian breaks the barrier (障碍) by holding the paddle(球拍)in his mouth and using his right foot to serve the ball.
Hamadtou, who lost his arms in a train accident at the age of ten, was attracted to table tennis after being challenged by a friend. “I was once watching a match between two of my friends,” Hamadtou explains. “They disagreed on a point, When I counted the point in favor of one of them, the other player told me, ‘Mind your own business as you will never be able to play.’ It was that comment that fired me up to decide to play table tennis.”
It took Hamadtou three years to master the sport. He says the biggest challenge was working out the best way to control his body. “I was trying first to use the bat under the arm, and I also tried using other things, which weren’t working so well. Finally, I tried using my mouth. It took me nearly a year of practice to get used to holding the paddle with my mouth and making the serve. With practice and playing regularly, this skill was improved.”
The Egyptian’s impressive talent came to light in 2014 when he was awarded the best Arab Athlete of the year. He won a silver medal at the 2016 African Championships, qualified for his first Paralympics (残奥会) in 2016 at 43, and then again for the 2020 Tokyo Games at 48.
The inspiring athlete says, “The disability is not in arms or legs but to give up in whatever you would like to do.”
    25. Why did Hamadtou take up table tennis?

What could driving a race car and pointing a camera at the Milky Way have in common? More than you might imagine. Race car driver Bubba Wallace and photographer Batak Tefreshi made a journey together to remote Gooseberry Mesa, for an adventure aimed at taking pictures of the night sky.
Gooseberry Mesa, far from population centers, is protected from the nighttime light pollution, making it perfect for star photographers. Nature night environments such as this are rare.
Camping, hiking, and shooting stars in mountainous Mesa stress the similarity between photography and racing. Bubba notes, “Once you start the engine there’s no turning back—I know I’ll be in that seat for more than three hours.” Batak agrees, “I have the same feeling as soon as I touch the wheel of my camera—I’m ready to continue through the entire night.” For Bubba, developing patience allowed him to become a better driver and it is equally important to his photography.
Seizing the moment is crucial too. “Every minute things are changing—the Earth’s shadow, the moonlight, the rise of stars,” Batak explains. “If you lose the moment, it’s gone forever.” Bubba finds the physical and mental demands of racing as important when travelling in Utah’s rough landscapes under freezing temperatures.
Think incoming clouds, wind, or mist will ruin your chance at a perfect photo? According to Batak. “With wide-angle nightscapes every unexpected weather condition can be an opportunity. Our photos show oranges and blues around the moon you wouldn’t see under a clear sky.”
The team discovered shared interests that go beyond photography. “We are both crazy about bringing cultures together and using our work to break down boundaries(边界),” says Batak. “The night sky has a unifying power. The sky connects the whole world under one umbrella.”
    29. Why did Bubba and Batak choose Gooseberry Mesa?
A.It has a small population. B.It has perfect weather conditions.
C.It is free from light pollution. D.It has beautiful scenery.
    30. Which is required in both car racing and photography?
    A.Willpower. B.Teamwork. C.Bravery. D.Creativity.
31What does Batak think of unexpected weather as a photographer?
    A.Annoying. B.Disastrous. C.Positive. D.Challenging.
    32. Which may be a message behind the team’s photography work?
A.Appreciating the night sky. B.Connecting various cultures.
C.Removing racial boundaries. D.Protecting the environment.
    D
Researchers believe they have found an unknown kind of whale in waters off Mexico’s western coast. If others verify the finding, the new whale will be an important discovery among giant animals.
The team of researchers came across three unusual whales while following a rare group of beaked whales. The whales were near Mexico’s distant San Benito Islands, about 500 km south of the U.S. border. Beaked whales usually avoid meeting humans.
Jay Barlow studies sea animals. He noticed that it was a very unusual meeting. “It’s very rare to even see a beaked whale, and to find a group of friendly beaked whales, it’s even rarer,” he said.
Barlow said he and other researchers did not realize they were seeing a possible new kind of whale until later. The group saw something different about the whales’ teeth when they studied the photos they took of the animals. The underwater recordings of the whales’ calls also suggested they were different from all others.
The researchers are now waiting for test results on water they collected near the whales. There could be skin cells in the water from the whales. If so, they will examine the DNA to make sure whether the whales are a new species.
Though up to 5 meters long, the whales can be hard for scientists to see. That is because they usually swim and eat at depths of around 914 meters. They only come up at times for air. In the deep water, the animals can stay away from their main enemy—killer whales.
Barlow said that finding a new species is a rare event. His team has evidence about the whales that looks like a new discovery. He said the DNA testing would help determine it and he hoped the whales could be determined as a new species. That would bring the number of known beaked whale species to 24.
    33. What does the underlined word “verify” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
    A. Value. B. Refuse. C. Prove. D. Research.
    34. What made the researchers believe that they might find a new whale species?
    A. The whales’ huge size. B. The whales’ sounds.
    C. The shape of the whales’ mouth. D. The whales’ friendly behavior.
    35. Why do beaked whales prefer to live in the deep water?
    A. To find enough food. B. To keep themselves safe.
    C. To avoid meeting humans. D. To reduce the need for air.
    36. What was Barlow’s attitude towards determining the beaked whales as a new species?
    A. indifferent. B. negative. C. unclear. D. Supportive.
    37. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. It’s common for humans to meet a group of friendly beaked whales.
    B. The DNA test results have suggested the beaked whale is a new species.
    C. Sometimes the beaked whales would come out of water for breathing.
    D. The researchers found the longest beaked whale is 5 meters long.
    第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)

You may think that choosing to lose weight requires a lot of effort and pain.
The truth is, you can lose weight, feel healthier, and look amazing, all by doing small things every day. 38 When you’re ready to lose a few pounds, check out these small everyday things you can do.
    39
Believe it or not, the size of your dinner plate can have a dramatic effect on how much food you eat at any time of the day. The bigger your plate, the more you can fit on it, and the more you put into your body.
Use a Food Diary or App
It’s so easy to sit at your desk or on the couch eating up an entire bag of potato chips, or a full packet of cookies. 40
If you keep a food diary or app outlining what you eat, how much of it, and how many calories it has, you may be more likely to control your food intake.
    Drink More Water
41 Your body needs more water than you’re probably giving it, and you may be reading the signs all wrong. Keep a water bottle on hand, drinking water throughout the day. By doing so, you can control what you eat while also making sure your body is not short of water.
    Exercise More
It seems like a given –– you exercise, you lose weight. However, it’s not only those 10-mile runs that make all the difference. 42 For example, park your car further away at the grocery store, take the steps instead of the elevator and jog on the spot during TV ad breaks of your favorite show.
    A. Use Smaller Dishes
    B. Control your food intake.
    C. You have to make plans for exercise.
    D. All too often, we mistake thirst for hunger.
    E. Many small changes can make a great difference.
    F. Exercise doesn’t have to be something you have to think about to do, and it can be fun.
    G. However, if you know how many calories are in them, you may decide to change your mind.

    Dear Chris,
I am more than delighted to learn that you are obsessed with Chinese sports. My favorite Chinese sport is tai chi.
My affection for tai chi dates back to my PE class back in primary school. I was impressed by its magical combination of softness and strength. I practiced hard to sharpen my skills, and the constant praise from my teacher pushed me forward to learn it in depth. I am now a member of my school’s tai chi club, where students of various levels who are passionate about tai chi gather around to practice tai chi together. Tai chi has brought me massive benefits. Not only has it bettered my health, but also built my confidence, thus improving my studies.
I hope my introductions can be of some help. What's your favorite sport? I am looking forward to your reply.

M: Great, thanks! I visited York with Helen and the kids. York is a really beautiful historic city and there are lots of old buildings. And my friend booked us a really nice hotel.
W: Oh? What did you do while you were there?
M: Well, we visited the old castle on Saturday. I love history and the kids enjoyed exploring all the different rooms. And we visited the museum on Sunday. It’s so interesting. You can see what the town looked like in the past.
W: What did you do on Saturday evening?
M: I wanted to go to a football match, but there were no tickets. So we went to see a movie instead. The kids liked it, but I didn’t. It was boring, to be honest.
W: What did you do for food?
M: Helen likes trying new food different from Italian food. So we planned to go to a Thai restaurant. Helen enjoyed it, but the kids didn’t like the food, so we walked to a Chinese restaurant, further along the street.
    (Text 10)
M: Hi, I’m Chris from Florida. Last year, I moved to London, where I’m working for an American company. It’s been a big change, and there have been lots of things to get used to. For example, in the U.S. we drive on the right, while here in Britain I’ve had to get used to driving on the left.
What else? Well, the weather in Florida is usually great, so I’m used to lots of sunshine, and I used to sunbathe a lot. In London it rains so much. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it, and I always remember to take my umbrella with me.
Food in England is different, too. In America, I used to eat a lot of Mexican food. Here in England, people love Indian food, so I’m getting used to the different tastes. At the company where I work, it’s quite different. I used to work from 9 a.m. till 11 p.m. I hated working so late. Here in England, I start at 8:30 a.m., but finish at 5 p.m. On Friday evening English people like to go to the club with friends, but in America I used to go to the gym. I love sports.
Is there anything else? Some of the words are different. The subway is called the “underground” in London, and British people call the fall “autumn”.
