    In winter the weather in England is often very cold. In spring and autumn there are sometimes cold days, but there are also warm days. The weather is sometimes hot in summer, but it is not often very hot. There are often cool days in summer.

    No one can change the weather. But if we can read the signs around us correctly, we will know how the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecast.

    For many centuries and in many countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecast. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. Many people feel the coming of wet weather in their bones. Their joints (关节)ache. Some birds fly high if the fine weather is coming, but they fly near ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. It is probably because the insects which they are hunting fly low. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the evening just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in colour, then rainy weather will probably come the next morning.

Heat and Learning

    According to economic researchers, there is a "close" link between lower school achievement and higher temperatures.

    An analysis of test scores of 10 million US secondary school students over 14 years old shows that hot weather produces a negative impact on their scoring results. The study says a practical response could be to use more air conditioning. Students taking exams in a summer heatwave might have always complained that they were hampered(妨碍, 限制) by the hot weather. And this study, from academics at Harvard, the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and Georgia State University, claims to have produced the first clear evidence showing that when temperatures go up, school performance goes down.
