Situated along the Pacific Flyway, a good migratory path that stretches from Alaska to Patagonia, Santa Cruz plays host to hundreds of bird species. Just head to one of the spots listed below and see for yourself!

    UCSC Arboretum

The diverse plants that attract a wide range of birds make these gardens a wonderful place to start. Mark your calendar for the Arboretum's popular Hummingbird Days, a family-friendly festival that celebrates the tiny birds on March 5th and 6th.

    Natural Bridges State Beach

This scenic park is excellent for bird watchers due to its wide sampling of local habitats. Over 250 bird species have been recorded in the area.

    Neary Lagoon

Birdsong fills the air at this peaceful oasis (绿洲) less than a 10-minute walk from the fun of the Santa Cruz Beach. A walkway allows visitors a front-row view of birds such as American Coots,

    Watsonville Wetlands

The wetlands provide a year-round home for local birds and serve as a stop for migratory birds visiting from faraway. Drop by the Nature Center for exhibits, maps, and suggestions for best spots to visit.

    Birding Tips

The early birder gets the worm. You're likely to see more birds earlier rather than later in the day.

No two visits are likely to be the same. Varying times and seasons bring different birds and behavior.

No matter how cute those little birds are, you should resist feeding them with your bread. It's unhealthy for the bird and the surrounding ecosystem.

    How to Get More Involved

We recommend joining the Santa Cruz Birding Club for public events and abundant online guides. Contact us free at Birding &. Wildlife Watch Kit for registration.

I carried the flame in 1984 in the torch relay as it made its way across the country to the Olympics in Los Angeles. What an honor that was! I wasn't an Olympic athlete. My dad did some voluntary work for the Olympics, for which I had been offered the opportunity.

On one May night, the flame had begun its route across America, covering 15,000 kilometers, It inched its way up the coast from New York, each runner carrying it for a kilometer. Some of the runners were legendary, like the grand-daughter of gold-medaled Jesse Owens, Others were common people like me and supporters of the cause.

I had been sent a uniform and the official torch. I held it as I stood waiting for the flame to arrive. Part of me wondered if it would even arrive. Would they ever find enough runners to cover that enormous distance? Other people were huddled in the dark on the sidewalk. What would they see?

All at once it happened. A runner appeared and lit my torch. I was sent on my way, jogging down the highway. There was no question whether I had worried about finding my way in the dark. People lined the road, clapping and shouting as I passed. Actually, it was not for me but for the cause that I represented. Soon, I passed the flame on to the next runner, who would pass it along to the next until it finally reached gold medalist Rafer Johnson who would carry it into the L. A.Coliseum.

How lucky I was to play a part! But I think we all have these opportunities to carry the torch, for we are all the light of the world. Therefore, why not let your light shine?

    1. Why was the author chosen to relay the Olympic torch?

A.He used to be an athlete.

    B. It was all thanks to his father.

    C.He was an Olympic volunteer.

D.It was because of his supporters.

    25. Why did the author mention Jesse Owens in paragraph 2?

    A. To introduce the athlete's achievement.

    B. To explain the torch carriers' composition.

    C. To show his deep admiration for the athlete.

    D. To doubt the popularity of the Olympics locally.

    1. How did the author feel while waiting for the flame to arrive?

    A. Relaxed. B. Disappointed. C.Worried. D.Excited.

    27. What does the author mainly express in the last paragraph?

    A. Satisfaction. B. Relief. C.Sympathy. D. Encouragement.

Two protection groups successfully removed the invading(入侵的)European rabbits from the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve (HPNR). These rabbits destroyed the habitats for the Humboldt penguins and Peruvian petrels(海燕)on the two islands of the HPNR, which are home to 80 percent of Humboldt penguins in the world and were once home to 100,000 pairs of Peruvian petrels. However, the protection groups couldn't have completed the task without the help of a four-legged friend, Finn—a yellow dog trained to discover holes of the invading rabbits.

Due to their good sense of smell, dogs have become rising stars in searching for invasive animals, protecting wildlife and assisting scientists in their field work. Finn is an example of how dogs can make a big difference to environmental protection by speeding up searches or finding targets that humans can't find. In this case, Finn played a key role in protecting the habitats of penguins and petrels. It used its good sense of smell to aid the field team in ensuring that the HPNR was entirely free of rabbits.

The rabbits ate certain plants which provided shade for baby penguins, and they also took over the holes that petrels use to nest. Thanks to the efforts of Finn and the people of the protection groups, the HPNR was free of the invading rabbits. Thus the penguins and petrels have their habitats back. Meanwhile, since completing the removal, plants there have grown better. Scientists have recorded 16 types of plants that have never been identified on the islands!

"No wonder Finn is called a 'Wonder Dog'. It has a very good sense of smell," states Karen, who worked alongside Finn. It's able to determine the position of a rabbit from long distances by sniffing. Without it, we can only rely on our eyes to spot the invading rabbits hidden there."

    28. What does the underlined part the task in paragraph 1 refer to?

    1. Protecting the HPNR from destruction.
      B. Helping the rabbits hunt for more food.
      C. Assisting scientists in biological research.

D.Building more nests for baby penguins

    29. In what way do European rabbits cause harm to the HPNR?

    A. Frightening some penguins.

    B.Producing much more waste

    C. Killing penguins and pertrels babies

    D. Eating plants and occupying nests.

    30. How does Finn help in the HPNR?

    1. By watching over baby penguins.
      B. By frightening away petrels' enemies.

C.By catching and killing European rabbits.

    D. By positioning European rabbits quickly.

    31. What is the text mainly about?
        A. How European rabbits invaded.

    B. How popular Finn was in the HPNR.

    C. How the HPNR was successfully protected.

    D. How much the penguins relied on humans.

Each year, the world wastes about one-sixth of the food available to consumers. That's the finding of a new United Nations report. It calculated numbers for 2019, the most recent year for which data are available. The report now estimates global food losses at about 931 million tons. That's an average of 121 kilograms for each man, woman and child on Earth.

What isn't eaten also wastes all of the resources used to make that food, notes Martina Otto. Based near Paris, France, she works for the U. N. Environment Program (UNEP). Those resources include the water, energy, money, human labor and more. Wasted food "does not feed people, but it does feed climate change," added Otto.

Some 690 million people go hungry each year. More than 3 billion people can't afford a healthy diet. At the same time, the activities that had produced all of the lost and wasted food produced 8 to 10 percent of all global greenhouse-gas emissions. Reducing food waste could ease hunger and potentially lower that pollution. That's the conclusion of Food Waste Index Report 2021.

Otto said, "We thought waste was mainly a problem in rich countries." In fact, the new report finds, food waste is a big problem in nations rich and poor.

While the report is the best analysis of the issue to date, several data gaps remain. The countries surveyed are home to just 75 percent of the world's population. What happens in other places remains unknown. And only 23 countries provided waste estimates for food losses by restaurants or grocery stores. The researchers tried to explain such gaps. To do this, they made estimates based on what they learned in parts of the world that do count such data.

Otto recommends that countries begin making more efficient use of food a part of their climate strategies. "Food waste has been largely overlooked in national climate strategies," Otto said. "We know what to do. And we can take action quickly."

    32. What's the world's amount of the food available to people in 2019?

    A. About 900 million tons in total. B. About 5. 5 billion tons in total.

C.About 120 kilograms per person. D. About 200 kilograms per person.

    33. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Slow global warming.

    B.Change food resources.

    C. Cause greenhouse effect.

    D. Reduce natural disasters.

    34. What does the author think of the report?

     A. Quite inspiring.    B. Rather unconvincing.

C.Good but imperfect. D. Subjective but acceptable.

35.Which of the following may Otto most probably agree with?

    A. Climate problem is the most serious problem.

    B. Saving food is meaningful to climate strategies.

C.People know how to make proper climate strategies.

    D. Most countries ignore climate change intentionally.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Who should you be friends with?

For International students, if you are going to the USA for the next four years, academics should not be the only things you think about. To quote Hamlet: “To be, or not to be (surrounded by people from your home country): that is the question."

    TO BE

    Instant friendship

There is nothing like the instant connection with friends from your country while abroad. You don't have to explain cultural references, and that makes everything easier. 36________ Why would you come to a completely different country if you are going to just hang out with the exact same people?

    Sense of community

In some universities, if you have friends from your country, you can organize events to celebrate some of your country's festivities. 37 ________

    NOT TO BE

    You're learning English

One of the main reasons to study abroad is to learn a language through complete immersion(沉浸). 38________

    Learning from different cultures

Learning from different cultures will give you a new way of seeing the world. 39________ No matter where they come from, students have similar questions and doubts, so you won't be alone.

40________ Who should you be friends with? What will make you grow, and what will make you the happiest? You decide.

    A. In the end, it really is up to you.

B.You miss the food, the music or your family.

C.But be careful not to make them your only friends.

    D. You should be surrounded by people from your home country.

    E. You will be surprised to find how similar different cultures can be.

    F. Surrounding yourself with the people from home can limit that experience.

    G. With more people from your country, it becomes a support network as a community.

During the weekend I traveled by air at the first time in my life. I usually travel by train or bus. It's both cheaper but safer. But to fly in the sky was nothing new to me. At the beginning, I felt a little nervously and frightened. But very goon I became exciting when I found myself high up in the sky among the cloud. I was like a little bird fly freely. I also found that mountains, fields, rivers and so on were interestingly small. It was such a great fun. I really enjoy the frightening but comfortable journey very much. After all, it is interesting to take a plane than to take a car.
