At the time, nbdy knew what they were fr. But Dr. Watanabe suppsed that they might be an adaptatin fr feeding n ther tiny creatures living in the lake.
Seals arrived in Baikal tw millin years ag, frm the Arctic Ocean. S did sme much smaller sea creatures, knwn as amphipds(片脚类动物). They have diversified int mre than 340 native species. Sea creatures the size f seals wuld nrmally see amphipds t be t small t hunt. But Dr. Watanabe wndered if Baikal seals'cmb-like teeth might have evlved t enable the seals t hunt these tiny creatures t make them useful prey(猎物)-just as sme whales cllect extremely small shellfish using cmb-like structures.
