In my first literature class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write about it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said,Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.

She glanced down at me through her glasses,You are not different from your classmates, young man."

I tried, but I didn't finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.

In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots, which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.

Wasn't I the "blind" one in my class, being made to learn like the "sighted" students? My thoughts flowed and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was not different from others;I just needed a quieter place. Now that Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up? I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day-with anA" on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words:See what you can do when you keep trying."

24.Why did the author fail to finish class reading?

    A.He had poor reading skills.

    B.He was tired of literature.

    C.He had an attention disorder(障碍).

D.He wanted to take the task home.

    A.He was poor.

    B.He was very creative.

    C.He was near-sighted.

    D.He was well-educated.

26.What was Mrs. Smith's attitude to the author at the end of the story?

    A.Angry.    B.Impatient.    C.Supportive.     D.Negative.

27.What does the text mainly want to tell us?

A.The blind should be treated with respect.

B.Teachers can open up a new world to students.

C.Everyone needs a hand when faced with challenges.

D.One can find his way out of difficulties with efforts.

    C

Travel is one of the most exciting experiences a human being can have. Imagine how Italian traveler Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself on Chinese soil, seeing a way of life quite different from anything he'd seen before.

And how great must it have been to listen to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia? His brain must have been packed with everything he'd seen and heard, leading to the founding of the Silk Road.

Some people have traveled all over the world, and travel is a way of life to them. They perhaps know what to expect before they travel. That's why the best travel is when it's for the first time. Imagine a person who has always wanted to travel to the United States. Of course, they've probably seen the Statue of Liberty a thousand times on TV, and the White House, and all the other famous sights. But none of that would compare to the excitement of looking out of the window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into view.

Although travel is often just for recreation, it's also educational. We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are.

We're learning every day: new words in a new language, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not the classroom. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to

live, and that the way we live isn't necessarily the best way.

28.The author uses Marco Polo and Zhang Qian as examples to ____________.

A.explain how the Silk Road was founded

B.present travel as an amazing experience

C.show how the way people travel has changed

D.describe important cultural exchanges in history

29.By saying "the best travel is when it's for the first time", the author means ____________.

A.one's first trip is usually the most challenging

B.no other trip is better than one's first trip

C.there is always much to learn on one's first trip

D.people usually make better preparations for their first trip

30.The underlined word "recreation" in Paragraph 4 probably means ___________.

    A.fun           B.risk        C.learning        D.knowledge

31.According to the last two paragraphs, the author believes that ____________.

A.traveling should be included in formal education

B.traveling improves people's confidence in their lifestyle

C.foreign journeys can enrich people's knowledge of the world

D.foreign ways of life are better than our own way of life at home.

    D

Sitting around doing nothing used to seem like one of the safest activities possible. Then a few years ago scientists discovered that sitting all clay causes harmful changes that increase your chances of meeting an early end. Even regular workouts didn't fix the ill effects of having your bottom in a chair all workday. Suddenly, sitting became public

health enemy number one. However, a new research finds that tiny bursts of intense (激烈的) activity are enough to protect your body from the worst effects of your couch-bound (长期坐在沙发上的) lifestyle.

In the research, the scientists closely observed eight young, healthy volunteers as they sat around. On the first day of the experiment they simply lounged for six hours. On the second day they got up every hour and engaged in five rounds of four seconds of intense workouts on a specialized bike.

"Twenty seconds total exercise an hour sounds like nothing, but the data showed it made a big difference to the subjects' bodies. In short, they didn't exhibit the usual ill effects of having sat all day. This study is small, but it's still both hopeful and relevant. The results suggest that breaking up sitting with frequent exercise can undo some of the effects of being inactive, 'explains Gretchen Reynolds.

"While the study used a special type of bike developed by sports scientists, the researchers feel similar results are obtainable with home exercise equipment. However, you may have to work for a few more seconds to reach the same level of intensity. You should try to get your heart pumping to its maximum as quickly as possible to ensure the

effect. When you find yourself sitting for most of the day, try to rise frequently and move as often during the day as possible and for as many seconds as you can manage," Reynolds concludes.

32.What does the new research find?

A.Regular workouts can extend your life.

B.Sitting all clay can cause permanent harm.

C.Sitting is a worst enemy for people's health.

D.Intense exercise can relieve the damage of sitting.

33.How did the researchers reach the conclusion?

    A.By comparing figures.

    B.By analyzing phenomena.

    C.By describing behaviors.

    D.By referring to documents.

34.What can we know from Reynolds' words?

A.The study still needs further experiments for data.

B.Reaching maximum heart rate should be the aim.

C.Working out at home is much less effective.

D.20 seconds' exercise is far from enough.

35.What can be the best title of the passage?

A.The Worst Health Problem Is Solved

B.Intense Activities Are Beneficial to Health

C.Just 4 Seconds' Exercise Makes a Big Difference

D.New Research Redefines a Healthy Lifestyle

    Dear Paul
I'm sorry that you're having trouble learning Chinese. It is no easy job and I have

heard a lot about the difficulties in Chinese learningso you are not alone. Here are some tips you may find helpful
It would be a good idea if you could find as many chances as possible to talk with local people. It is a great way to push you to speak Chinese as well as practice your listening skills. Equally important is reading more. Go to the bookstore and find some Chinese storybooks suitable for you and set a time to read every day

It takes time to learn a language. Be patient and you'll make progress

    Yours

    Li Hua
