Several big wildfires have been brought under control in Chongqing with the help of local motorcyclists. The city government has called for volunteers to join in the tough firefighting, and a large number of motorcyclists have played an important role and won widespread praise.
According to the city emergency management bureau on Wednesday, wildfires in Chongqing's Dazu and Tongliang districts have been brought under control, and other fires-in Fuling, Kaizhou and Wanzhou districts-have been extinguished(熄灭).
The local government mobilized 1, 152 emergency rescue workers and four helicopters to put out the fires in the city’s Beibei district and evacuated (疏散) 46 people to safety shelters.
“It is my honor and duty to guard my hometown, ” said 27-year-old Li Xin, owner of Yueqi Motorcycle Club. On Sunday night, upon hearing the fire breakout, Li organized a team of 15 club members to sign up to support firefighting in Beibei's Xiema county, the center of the local blazes.
The team members, with an average age of 29, took turns using five dirt bikes and four road bikes to carry materials and equipment to firefighters and to transport people and necessities.
“The unpaved mountain paths and newly dug fire barriers require really good motorcycle skills, ” Li said, adding that even the best motorcyclist on the team might lose his balance and fall as he carried heavy materials and equipment in a large farmer's back-basket. He said that to prevent heatstroke in the extreme outdoor heat, the team gave up dressing in thick riding suits. They also joined in cutting wood and putting out fires, working more than 12 hours a day on average. “We will stick to the site until the fire is out, ” he added.

Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely leading to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned(有身体条件的)athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing (摆 动)and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. According to most data, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories(卡路里)per hour, which is about twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1, 000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not hit the body as hard as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1. 4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries connected with running, such as runner's knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place much stress on the ankles (脚 踝) and hips (臀部), so people with a history of such injuries might want to be careful in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first communicate with a coach or experienced racer to learn proper skills, she says. It takes some practice.
28. Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
A. They must run long distances.
B. They do well in the marathon.
C. They have to follow special rules.
D. They are good at swinging their legs.
29. What advantage does race walking have over running?
A. It's more popular at the Olympics.
B. It's less challenging physically.
C. It's more effective in body building.
D. It's less likely to cause knee injuries.
30. What is Dr. Norberg's suggestion for someone trying race walking?
A. Getting experts' opinions.
B. Having a medical examination.
C. Employing an experienced coach.
D. Doing regular exercises.
31. Which word best describes the author's attitude to race walking?
A Puzzled. B. Careful. C. Supportive. D. Worried.
D
This year researchers expect the world to take 1. 35 trillion photographs, or about 3. 7 billion per day. All those pixels (像素) take up a lot of room if they are stored on personal computers or phones, which is one reasōn why many people store their images in the cloud. Būt unlike a hard drive which can be encrypted (加密) to protect its data, cloud storage users have to trust that a tech platform will keep their private pictures safe. Now a. team of Columbia University computer scientists have developed a tool to encrypt images stored on many popular cloud services while allowing authorized users to view and show their photographs as usual.
Getting cloud-based photographs with bad intentions (意图) can leak(泄露)personal information. In November 2019, for example, a bug in the popular photograph storage app Google Photos mistakenly shared some users' private videos with strangers. Safety experts also worry about employees at cloud storage companies getting users' images without being allowed.
So the Columbia researchers came up with a system called Easy Secure Photos (ESP), which they presented at a recent meeting. “We wanted to see if we could make it possible to encrypt data while using existing services, ” says a computer scientist Jason Nieh, one of the developers of ESP. “Everyone wants to stay with the storage app and does not have to register on a new encrypted-image cloud storage service. ”
To overcome this problem, they created a tool that protects blocks of pixels but moves them around to hide the photography successfully. First, ESP’s algorithm (算法) divides a photograph into three separate parts, each one including the image s red, green or blue color data. Then the system hides the pixel blocks around among these three parts (allowing a block from the red color, for example to hide in the green or blue ones). But the 'program does nothing within the pixel blocks. As a result, the photograph remains unchanged but ends up looking like unclear black-and-white ones to anyone who gets them without the decryption(解密) key.
32. What's probably the main purpose for people to store images in the cloud?
A. To save storage room.
B. To make photos beautiful.
C. To try a new storage way.
D. To keep their privacy safe.
33. Why might employees in cloud storage companies be distrusted by experts?
A. They sell users' passwords.
B. They have invented new tools.
C. They often let out personal information.
D. They may look at users' images in secret.
34. What's the advantage of ESP?
A. It can provide clear images.
B. It can decrease the upload time.
C. It can divide images into different types.
D. It can encrypt data on the present platform.
35. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The method of encryption.
B. The image-processing technique.
C. The separation of files of images.
D. Data analysis of colors.

But the weather was beautiful, the atmosphere was fantastic, and my training beforehand was just enough-I finished the race! It was an amazing feeling! My favorite marathon was the one in Reykjavik, Iceland. Iceland is a beautiful country and the scenery along the course was breathtaking. The most difficult race was in Kuala Lumpur. First of all, it was really hot. But, my biggest mistake was that I forgot to pack my running shoes! Can you believe it?! So, the day before the race, I had to buy new shoes and during the race, my feet were pretty painful! In St. Petersburg, which is in Russia, I managed to finish in third place! This was a real shock. After my last race in Bangkok, Thailand, I had completed my challenge. I still enjoy running. I'm currently preparing for a full marathon in Stockholm. And maybe I'll try running 20 marathons in the new year!

Dear Sir/Madam,
I'm Li Hua, a student from Grade 10. Learning on the school notice board that the president of the calligraphy club is recruited, I am more than interested in the position, thus applying for it without any delay with the firm belief that I am the one you are looking for.
First, hardly had I set foot on junior high school when I started receiving professional calligraphy training, as a result of which I have neat and beautiful handwriting after years of constant practice and this can be proved by piles of trophies in my bedroom. Second, not only am I a people person with excellent interpersonal skills, enabling me to communicate with my peers with great ease, but I also have responsibility and patience, qualities a head of a club should have. On top of that, I used to be monitor of our class, which gives me experience as the organizer and leader of a team.
All in all, from what I stated above, it's obvious that I own the ability needed by the post, whether it be the expertise in handwriting or the characters required. Should you treat my application
favorably, I would spare no effort to offer my best service. I am looking forward to your reply at your earliest convenience.
Yours, Li Hu
