Next t a tall building, the Muziekplein frest, abut the size f a basketball curt, is ne f seven such tiny frests in the city f Utrecht, and 144 acrss the Netherlands. Befre it was planted, the area was a parking lt.
By the end f this year, accrding t IVN Nature Educatin, the rganizatin leading the cuntry's plan, there will be 200 such small frests in the Netherlands. In many ther cuntries, cmmunities are creating such small area and native frests as psitive respnses t serius envirnmental challenges. The frests can be any shape, but accrding t IVN's instructins, they must be at least fur meters wide. A tiny frest can be built under a year. And it typically includes between 20 and 40 different tree species.
Since the first frest was planted in the Netherlands in 2015, the cncept has becme ppular. Daan Bleichrdt, wh launched IVN's Tiny Frest plan with the gal f making nature mre accessible t children, says he thinks they are ppular because peple are becming mre aware f majr envirnmental challenges. It's a very practical way fr peple t d smething psitive in light f climate change and lss f bidiversity(生物多样性).
Data released by Wageningen University researchers in April shws that the frests hst a range f animal and plant species. Acrss the 11 tiny frests in a study, vlunteers bserved 636 animal species. They als identified 298 plant species in additin t the riginal species planted in the areas.
