Later this month, Tate Britain will host its first Van Gogh exhibition since 1947. Here we've rounded up 4 of his best paintings before the show.
Potato Eaters
Potato Eaters was Van Gogh's first major work and, despite a distinct lack of colour, it was one that he was most proud of. His aim was to represent the difficulties of country life, so the farmers are painted in earthy tones with rough faces and bony hands. He was more concerned with conveying his message than achieving technical perfection in this painting.
Irises
Van Gogh finished almost 142 pieces during his stay in the Saint Remy de Provence asylum (精神病院), where he was a voluntary patient from 1889 to 1890. This piece was started shortly after he arrived there. The hospital garden provided much inspiration for the artist during his stay there. Originally, the flowers in this work were painted purple but the red pigment (色素) faded over time and has now turned blue.
Cafe Terrace at Night
Despite being painted more than 130 years ago, this cafe still exists in France and has since been renamed the Cafe Van Gogh. This artwork marks the first time Van Gogh's famous post-impressionistic star-filled sky was seen in a piece, and it was painted on the ground, in person, rather than from memory. While the artwork doesn't bear his signature, it's widely known to be Van Gogh's, as he mentioned Cafe Terrace at Night in a number of his letters.
Wheat Field With Cypresses
This piece was inspired by the view from Van Gogh's asylum window and was finished on the spot. The work was the title of three paintings that offer an insight into his stay at the hospital.' Van Gogh was 80 pleased with the summer landscape that he made three copies there, one of the same size—which hangs in the National Gallery and two smaller copies which he planned to gift to his mother and sister.
1. Which painting did Vincent van Gogh take most pride in?
A. Irises. B. Potato Eaters.
C. Cafe Terrace at Night. D. Wheat Field With Cypresses.
2. What is the original color of the flowers in Irises?
A. Purple. B. Blue. C. Red. D. Yellow.
3. What do the last two paintings have in common?
A. They were the same in size. B. They had more than one copy.
C. They were signed by the artist, D. They were painted on the ground.
【答案】1. B 2. A 3. D

Listening to guitarist Milos Karadaglic’s album, you will find yourself wandering in a world where you are surrounded by amazing classical guitar music. “I want to wake classical guitar music up from its hibernation and show what I can do and what my instrument can do,” said Milos.
Born 37 years ago in a small town in Yugoslavia, he was inspired from an early age to be a performer. Since his country had a small population and no formal music school, making a career on the instrument was extremely hard for him. It all began when Milos discovered an ancient, dusty guitar with broken strings in his basement. Strangely, this broken instrument convinced him that he must become a guitarist. By the age of 9, he was giving public performances, and at 11 he won his first national competition. He was also a talented singer and became star of TV and radio.
Unfortunately, Yugoslavia was torn apart in 1992, and because of the war, Milos’ family suffered food shortages. Fast forward to 1996, when Milos became a teenager, he had his first opportunity to travel outside of his hometown to play a concert. It was in Paris where he was amazed by its western European prosperity and air of Christmas happiness.
During the trip, he made up his mind to study at the Royal Academy of Music. He sent a home-made tape of his performance to the academy, where a professor found something special in his playing, so Milos was admitted to the academy. Afterwards, Milos earned first-class honors and a master’s degree, and his albums are highly praised by other world-famous guitarists.
However, this is just the beginning for Milos, and his horizons seem limitless. He has been making a variety of plans for broadening the classical music’s reach.
4. What can we learn about Milos from this story?
A. He studied music in a college in his own country.
B. It was his master’s degree that made him famous.
C. Travelling to Paris enabled him to get further education.
D. Poverty was the main reason for him to play the guitar.
5. How was Milos admitted to the Royal Academy of Music?
A. By being introduced to a professor by his teacher.
B. By sending a tape of his performance.
C. By taking part in a music competition.
D. By having a college entrance exam.
6. Which of the following is the correct order of Milos’ experiences?
a. He discovered an old, broken guitar.
b. He won the national competition for the first time.
c. He made his mind to study at the Royal Academy.
d. He travelled to Paris to play a concert for the first time.
A. a, c, d, b B. b, a, d, c C. c, b, a, d D. a, b, d, c
7. What can be the theme of the text?
A. Talented guitarist pursues the highest level.
B. The limitless horizons of guitar music.
C. A guitar hero’s success in war.
D. Guitar music from Yugoslavia.

The idea that you can use humor, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play plays an important part in keeping you healthy.
Treat the blues with a sense of humor, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you,and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger.
Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it's for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive (认知的) falling.
Anyway, adding humor, laughter and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humor, laughter and play to make our life more active, more interesting and happier.
8. What does the underlined word “infectious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Playing an important role. B. Keeping people in high spirits.
C. Quickly influencing other people. D. Preventing illness from spreading.
9. What can laughter increase according to the author?
A. Cognitive ability. B. Good relationships.
C. A sense of humor. D. Happiness and trust.
10. What does the author think the old should do?
A. They should have a good rest. B. They should play like children.
C. They should prevent cognitive falling. D. They should take part in physical play.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Humor, Laughter and Play for Health B. Always Keep Our Body Healthy
C. Have an Active and Happy Life D. Let Our Body and Mind Relax
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A

We have heard some interesting ways that 5G wireless technology might change our lives in the future.
5G, short for the 5th generation mobile communication technology, promises Internet speeds between 50 to 100 times faster than current 4G systems. While 5G is set to be used in some limited areas of America this year, much of the world is not expected to receive widely available service until 2023.
One project in Britain, however, is already testing this superfast technology on an unlikely group of Internet users — cows. The project was developed by American technology company Cisco Systems, Inc. It also receives money from the British government. Cisco says the program seeks to explore the future of 5G connectivity in rural areas around the world.
Testing areas were set up at farms in three rural areas of England. The cows are equipped with 5G-connected devices(装置) that link up to a robotic milking system which uses sensors and machine learning to fully automate the process. System designers say technology takes over after a cow feels ready to be milked and walks toward an automatic gate. The device is designed to recognize each individual cow. It then positions equipment to the right body position for milking. During the process, machines release food for the cow as a reward.
Other 5G technology tools include automated brushes that turn on when the cow rubs (蹭) up against them. Sensors also control the amount of light to the cows’ living areas depending on the weather. And, an automatic feeding system makes sure the animals always get enough to eat.
Duncan Forbes, head of the project, told Reuters that the project shows the farm’s cow operations can be greatly improved with 5G technology and that the experiment provides strong evidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the future, not just on farms in Britain, but in rural communities across the world.
12. What is the purpose of Cisco Systems, Inc.’s project?
A. To win financial support from British government.
B. To test the effects of 5G technology on animals.
C. To promote its technological development in Britain.
D. To expand the future use of 5G in rural communities.
13. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The project. B. The company.
C. The technology. D. The group.
14. What can we learn about 5G according to the text?
A. It is no worse than 4G in terms of speed.
B. It is already widely available in the world.
C. It has made improvement in operating the cows.
D. It is based on sensors and machine learning.
15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Entertainment. B. Lifestyle. C. Education. D. Technology.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. D

七选五。___16___When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view. The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels.___17___.The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans.___18___It included such items as automobiles and new houses.By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment.___19___On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice.___20___In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.
A. Then a third level appeared.
B. Different people have different wants on each level.
C. There are several levels of wants in one’s life.
D. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears
E. At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure.

【16题详解】
根据下文“When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.”(当一个饥饿的人得到一顿饭时,他开始考虑一件大衣;当一位高管得到一辆新跑车时,乡村俱乐部和快乐的景象就会映入眼帘)可知人想要的东西是无穷尽的,故G选项“人类的需求似乎无穷无尽”切题。故选G。
【17题详解】
根据上文“The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels.”(人类的许多需求可以被视为构成了几个层次)可知,选项承接上文说明层次的变化。 故D选项“当有足够的钱满足一个层次的需求时,就会出现另一个层次”切题。故选D。
【18题详解】
根据上文“The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans.”(第一个也是最基本的需求涉及食物。 故选A。
【19题详解】
根据上文“It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment”(它包括各种商品和服务,其中许多可以被称为“奢侈品”。其中包括度假旅行、最好的医疗和娱乐)可知,选项承接上文说明还包括什么。故F选项“这里还包括精美的食物和最新款式的服装。”切题。故选F。
【20题详解】
根据上文“A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice.”(第五个层次可能涉及到通过社区行动可以最好地实现的需求。消费者可能会在税收上花更多的钱来支付政府针对疾病、无知、犯罪和偏见的行动。)根据下句“In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.”(这样,我们可以更充分地享受前四个层次的美好事物。)说明在这一阶段消费者要寻求的是更高层次的要求,故E项“在这个阶段,我们现在可能会寻求确保健康、安全和休闲”切题。故选E项。

It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted most was a new bicycle. But I knew that my family couldn’t afford one, so I settled for a bedside table with lockable drawers, a safe place to keep my private stuff.
We went to the charity shop where we found an old dark one. It didn’t look too cool, but I thought that I would paint it to make it look better.
After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it. When I pulled the drawers out. I felt something stuck to the back. I reached in all the way, and guess what? A sealed bag with some papers in it.
When I opened the bag, I realized that the papers were official documents. And, wrapped in them were a bunch of ten and twenty dollar bills! Talk about finding a treasure! And on my birthday!
“Is this some kind of joke?” I said aloud. I went ahead and read the papers, and it turned out to be a will. Some old lady was leaving her savings for her son and grandchildren.
My mind was going crazy Was I the luckiest twelve-year-old ever? With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle. Who knows?
I began counting. When I reached a thousand dollars, my mother was knocking on my bedroom door. I quickly closed the drawer with the money in it.
“Do you want some help? Is everything all right?” she asked.
No, everything was not right. Actually, my stomach was growling (低吼).
“I’m okay,” I lied.
When my mother left my room, I lay on my bed, starting thinking. What a dilemma (窘境)! I wished there were some one I could talk with. Could I keep it and get all kinds of stuff for me and my family? It wouldn’t be too bad for me to keep it, if I shared it...right? Thoughts ran through my mind. But I really didn’t need someone else to give me the answer.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I finally made a decision and called my parents into my bedroom. When my parents saw what I had found in the drawer they were wide-eyed and speechless! Then, they read the papers carefully and were moved to tears. When they asked, “What should we do?” I said, “Let’s take it back to the store and find her family.” My father nodded with a smile on his face and my mother hugged me warmly, saying “You are my pride, dear.” I felt very happy because I already knew right from wrong. We collected all the money and papers at once, putting them in the drawer. We rushed to the charity shop with the drawer in the hope to find the owner as soon as possible.
Though surprised, the shop owner helped find the family’s telephone number. Within a few minutes, the family all came over. When I showed them what I had found in the drawer, they couldn’t believe their eyes. The parents had tears in their eyes. They were still sad about the lady’s death and the father had just lost his job. It was easy to see that my act of honesty gave them hope. They showed me sincere gratitude from the bottom of their hearts. In fact, I had never felt better before. No new bicycle could have made me felt as good about myself as I felt that day because I passed a very important test—a lost and found test of my own character.
