We stopped to choose a cake for our daughter. We’d passed several other elderly customers but our daughter
Norah seemed drawn to (被吸引 ) a man. Her face lit up like the sun and she waved excitedly saying, “Hi, old
person! It’s my birthday today!” “Hello, little lady! And how old are you today?” He asked. They chatted for a
few seconds.
We said goodbye and carried on shopping. A few minutes later, Norah asked me, “Can I take a picture with
the old man for my birthday?” I thought the old man couldn’t have gone very far. So we quickly found him.
“Excuse me, sir? She’d like to know if you’d take a photo with her for her birthday,” I asked. He looked surprised
and then happy. “A photo? With me?” He asked. “Yes! For my birthday!” Norah cheered. And so they posed
together and then they hugged each other like they were long lost friends.
We thanked Mr. Dan for sparing a few minutes of his day with us. He was moved to tears and said, “No,

Buildings with windows filled with water could save energy greatly, according to researchers backing the

new technology.
Traditional glass windows increase the heat and temperature in the room in summers, and let the heat inside
escape in winters, resulting in more electricity consumed for air-conditioners and more carbon emissions (排放).
Now, researchers at Loughborough University (UK) have created a water-filled window that can overcome these
problems.
The “water-filled glass” (WFG) system, designed by Dr. Matyas Gutai, involves a sheet of water being
trapped between a panel (嵌板) of glass, and the water is practically invisible. The windows are connected to an
indoor storage tank (箱) using pipes hidden in the walls, allowing water to flow easily between the windows and
the tank.
This system allows the house to cool and reheat themselves automatically. When sunlight streams through
the glass, the windows keep the buildings cool as the water takes in external and internal heat. This warm water
then flows back to the tank. And when the outdoor temperature drops, the stored warm water is brought back to
the walls to reheat the building using a monitoring system similar to central heating. The heated water can also be
used for domestic (家用的) purposes. Although some electricity is required to pump the water back and forth, it
uses much less energy than traditional air-conditioners or heaters.
Dr. Gutai claimed that WFG can save energy from 47% to 72% compared to when using traditional windows.
Once launched into the market, the windows will surely make a real splash, appealing to a large crowd of
environmentalists and contributing to reducing our carbon footprint. Currently, the inventor team is testing the
windows in two areas with different weather conditions. The research reveals that WFG systems perform well in
any inhabited climate—keeping buildings in hot climates cool and buildings in cool settings warm—without
requiring an additional energy supply.
28. What’s the weakness of traditional glass windows?
A. They are easy to break into.
C. They fail to trap the heat.
B. They release carbon dioxide.
D. They lead to more energy consumption.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The structure of the WFG system.
B. The working theory of the WFG system.
C. The advantages of water-filled windows.
D. The appearance of water-filled windows.
30. What’s the characteristic of the WFG system?
A. It is operated by man.
B. It needs no electricity at all.
C. It recycles the water in many ways.
D. It reheats the house via central heating.
31. What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Make a big fortune.
B. Draw lots of attention.
C. Form a huge waterfall.
D. Take no effects.

Doctors have long known that diet and exercise are the best ways to stay healthy. But few people get enough
exercise. Only 20% of Americans get the recommended 150 minutes of physical activity per week. More than 80
million Americans over age 6 are entirely inactive. People leading a sedentary (久坐的) life pay a price. They are
at higher risk for serious health problems. These include heart disease and cancer.
Health experts want people to know about the benefits of exercise. They believe it can lead to slower aging,
better moods, stronger vision—the list goes on.
This year, the U. S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) is starting a major study. It will record in detail what
happens inside a body in motion (运动). Through its research, the NIH hopes to prove scientifically that exercise
is good medicine.
The project will run for six years. A group of about 3, 000 sedentary people will take part in the project. They
will range from 11-year-olds to the elderly. The group will begin an exercise program. Their blood, fat, and
muscle will be studied before and after each workout. Scientists will look for clues to how the body changes with
physical activity. A group that doesn’t exercise will also be tracked. Experts will compare the two groups. Studies
show that many positive changes happen in the body during and after a workout.
One of the best pieces of news is that much of what we already do counts as physical activity. “Sweeping the
floor, watering the plants, washing the car—all that is exercise,” says Jack Berryman. He is a retired professor of
medical history at Washington University School of Medicine, in Seattle. “Physical activity includes all movement,
not just throwing a ball through a basket.”
Bamman hopes the NIH study will help doctors give each of their patients a detailed workout plan. In the
meantime, here is a prescription (处方) for good health: Get active!
32. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. Lack of exercise can cause health problems.
B. Few people know the benefits of exercise.
C. Doctors suggest 150 minutes of weekly exercise.
D. People over age 6 are more likely to get serious disease.
33. How is the study by NHI conducted?
A. By doing a survey.
B. By making comparison.
D. By making interviews.
C. By making predictions.
34. What can we infer about exercise according to Jack Berryman?
A. It refers to doing sports.
C. It needs professional training.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Choose Your Favorite Exercise
C. The Best Medicine
B. It can replace medicine.
D. It includes doing housework.
B. The Price of Laziness
D. Balance Your Diet and Exercise

A Bowl of Noodles
Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the
house angrily. She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of he scolding from her mother. Having wandered
aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even
possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged
seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me...” she replied.

“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man,
“Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. Jenny thanked the man and started
to gobblle (狼吞虎咽) up the delicious food...then cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was moved by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on
the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me.
She is so mean and cruel!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you
thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times that
she has cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered
hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never
thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she
arrived home.
