What is the first thing that pops into your mind when someone mentions a construction site? Is it the dusty air, the noise of heavy machinery, the toiling workers soaked(湿透的) with sweat or the quiet enjoyment of books?
The latter is what one construction site in Xiamen city, East China’s Fujian province, is now known for. It quickly became the focus of attention on World Book Day, which fell on Saturday, thanks to a construction contractor(承包商) building a library for the site’s 200-plus workers.
The library is located in a portable container that is around 18 square meters. It was set up by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group Co, earlier this month to promote reading and bring knowledge and pleasure to the construction workers.
Over 2,000 books in different categories, are neatly placed on shelves. On the wall hangs a bulletin board listing six rules for borrowing books. The room is air-conditioned so the workers can read comfortably there.
“I like reading all kinds of books, ranging from nonfiction to romantic novels. The library has them all, ” says Li Chenghai, a migrant worker from Southwest China’s Sichuan province.
Compared with playing games on mobile phones or getting hooked on short-video apps, Li prefers reading as books can help him remain calm and broaden his horizons.
Li’s view is echoed by his fellow worker Dongqun, who also comes from Sichuan. Dong is more interested in books on health, cooking and parenting. “The work at the construction site is tiring. I want to learn something to keep myself healthy and inspire me in my daily life,” Dong says. She has worked on many construction sites, but this is the only one with a library.
Yi Jingxing, a 45-year-old worker, also frequents the library. “I like martial arts novels. Whenever I am free after work, I come here to read,” says Yi, who dreamed of being a martial arts hero as a kid.
24.Which of the following statements is not correct according to the passage?
A.Dong’s view is quite similar to that of Li’s.
B.Reading books enables you to be better prepared for what the future holds in store for you.

Chinese traditional painting and dance are two vital parts of the art world. But what about when they meet each other?
This year, a dance drama titled Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting (《只此青绿》) was staged on CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala and became a hit.
According to CCTV, this poetic dance program was inspired by the 900-year-old Chinese painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains (《千里江山图》). Created by Song Dynasty painter Wang Ximeng at about 18, the painting is amazing in its huge size, rich coloration and the expressive details, reported CCTV. It shows a Chinese blue-green landscape: “mountains and groupings of infinite rise and fall between cloudless sky and rippling water”.
When the dancers moved elegantly, audiences seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and rivers. “It brings me a pure experience of beauty. It is not only a drama but also an ‘exhibition’. Vast mountains and rivers are coming to life!” Internet user Mo Weisha wrote in a review. “More than a thousand years later, green mountains and rivers still wow people as they did long ago.”
Some people even decided to watch the dance again when it was staged in the theaters later. In fact, in recent years, more and more modern shows pay attention to Chinese traditional culture and have received warm welcome. As for why, it is due to people's great love for traditional culture.
“The younger generations have grown up with a more open mindset. They hug Chinese culture and are proud of it.” Yao Wei, director of Henan TV Station’s Innovation Center, told China Daily.

Alibaba Cloud and the Hangzhou city government announced the launch of ET City Brain 2.0, a cloud-powered and AI-driven urban traffic-management system that aims to increase the city’s efficiency.
After over two years of testing in Alibaba’s home base, ET City Brain has become the new infrastructure (基础设施) for Hangzhou, with a total coverage of 420 square kilometers in area, including over 1,300 traffic lights. Over 200 traffic officers are connected via mobile phones, enabling them to receive real-time alerts on any traffic-related emergencies.
In version 2.0, the system will optimize the city’s firefighting abilities by providing key information to firefighters, such as water pressure, the number and position of fire hydrants (消防栓) in a given area, the location of gas pipes and other details they need to know. The information is instant, making the entire firefighting process faster, safer and more accurate.
City Brain gives meaning to data. By using AI and advanced algorithms (计算程序), City Brain is able to analyze a large amount of data and turn them into useful information in real-time speed.
As a result of City Brain’s ability to predict traffic flow, detect accidents and provide instant feedback, Hangzhou has dropped from 5th to the 57th on the list of China’s most congested cities. Hangzhou is probably the only city that can tell you how many cars are on the street at any given time.
In the case of medical emergencies, City Brain is able to change traffic lights, so emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks can head to the scene without interruption, accelerating their arrival time by 49%.
Dr. Wang Jian, head of Alibaba’s Technology Steering Committee who invented the term “City Brain”,said the system is designed to empower a city to act quickly and directly. It is more than just about traffic management. It’s really about how to make city more livable at a time of shrinking natural resources around the globe. “It is a matter of sustainability, while using as little natural resources as possible,” Wang said, “This is just the beginning.”
32.What benefit will ET City Brain bring?
    A.Less traffic jam.
    B.Lower crime rates.
    C.Efficient government.
    D.Improved medical care.
33.Which of the following functions of the City Brain is NOT mentioned in the text?
    A.Predicting traffic flow.
    B.Giving quick feedback.
    C.Changing traffic lights.
    D.Handling traffic accidents.
34.Which of the following best explains the underlined word “optimize” in Paragraph 3?
    A.Practise. B.Better.
    C.Operate. D.Emphasize.
35.What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A.ET City Brain 2.0 is a mature version.
    B.Alibaba targets environment-friendly development.
C.The government is devoted to improving the system.
D.The system can solve the problem of lack of resources.

One night, Ryder saw his mother crying and learned she could no longer afford her last chemotherapy (化疗) treatment. He broke his piggy bank and offered her all his savings. Although it touched Annie’s heart, she told him it wasn’t enough. Ryder was so disappointed and hurried to the washroom to cry alone. It hurt him terribly to see his mother, who had long hair, and was now bald (秃头的) .
In an attempt to emotionally support her, Ryder brought an electric shaver and shaved his head. “Oh my God, Ryder!” Annie cried after seeing him. She was moved by what her son had done by sacrificing his hair. “Mom, I am with you in this. And you are not alone,” Ryder cried along, knowing little he would be laughed at by his best friends the next day.
A school fair had been organized on the playground, and many people, including parents, were gathering around the stalls (摊位). “Hey, look, someone in our class has lost all his hair!” Ryder’s friends laughed when he arrived.
“I got to carry on,” said Ryder, shyly covering his head in a hat. He was carrying two bags stuffed with some of his favorite toys, books, and recycled craft items he intended to sell at the fair.
As time passed, things were quickly getting sold in all the other stalls except Ryder’s. He did not find time to put up a fancy display or banner (横幅) to attract buyers. But he was determined to make a sale for his mother. So he took out a pen and a giant piece of paper and decided to create a sign that read: Help My Mom Fight Cancer.
“Please help me. I shaved my head to support my mother. But all are making fun of me without understanding me. And I have to sell these items and help her with some money. Please don’t let me down,” he shouted. The fair was about to end, and fortunately Ryder had managed to successfully sell most of his items.

4.根据上文“Most of the materials in a mobile phone can be recycled and used again.(手机中的大部分材料都可以回收再利用)”可知,手机可以回收利用,F项We sell the parts and they are used to make new products.(我们销售零件,并将其用于制造新产品)能够承接上文,上文中的be recycled and used again和该项中的make new products相对应,回收有用的手机材料可以用来制作新产品,并引出下文对部分回收材料的利用。故选F。
5.根据下文“You can usually just take it into a mobile phone shop and they’ll send it to us (你通常只需把它带到手机商店,他们会把它寄给我们)”可知,旧手机的回收是很方便的。由此可知,B项Recycling your old phone is easy.(回收旧手机很容易)引起下文,符合语境。故选B。

In Paris she lived a very simple life and studied very hard. Madame Curie devoted her whole life to the study of science. She won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1903 and for chemistry in 1911.

He was about to leave when his three friends surrounded him. “Not now, guys. I’m leaving. Quit it,” he begged. He thought they had come to laugh at him again, but to his shock, they took off their hats, and their heads were shaved clean. “WHAT? Why did you guys shave your heads?” Ryder was startled. “What’s going on?” As it turned out, the boys saw his sign about his mother, and they were moved by it. They felt guilty for picking fun at him.
“Ryder, please take this as well,” he heard a parent calling him. He turned around and saw a group of his friends’ parents approaching him. They contributed more money, and Ryder had approximately $11,000 with him in no time. He was so moved and thanked everyone for their heartwarming gesture. “Don’t thank us, Ryder. We should thank you for helping us realize our mistake. A person is not to be judged by appearance. Thanks for helping us understand that even a small act of kindness can make a huge difference in someone’s life.”
