Seoul, South Korea — Most weekends, the narrow alleys of Itaewon, the neon-lit nightlife district in South Korea’s capital Seoul, are busy with partygoers and tourists. Now it’s the site of one of the country’s worst disasters.
At least 151 were killed in the crush, with dozens more injured. Authorities have now launched an urgent investigation to find out how what was supposed to be a night of celebration went so horribly wrong, as families across the country mourn and search for missing loved ones.
Here’s what we know so far.
Itaewon has long been a popular place to celebrate Halloween, especially as the holiday became more popular in Asia in recent years. Some even fly into Seoul from other countries in the region for the festivities.
But for the past two years, celebrations were softened by pandemic restrictions(防疫限制措施) on crowd sizes and mask orders.
Saturday night marked the first Halloween since the country lifted these restrictions – lending it particular significance for many eager young people in Seoul, as well as international visitors including foreign residents and tourists.
Hotels and ticketed events in the neighborhood had been booked solid in advance, and large crowds were expected.
Witnesses told that there was very little — if any — crowd control before the mass of people turned deadly.
Videos and photos posted to social media show people crammed together, standing shoulder to shoulder in the narrow street.
After the first emergency calls came in around 10:24 p.m., authorities rushed to the scene — but the large crowd of people made it difficult to reach those who needed help.
The thousands of people in Halloween costumes contributed to the widespread sense of confusion and disorder. One witness described seeing a police officer shouting during the disaster — but some celebrators mistook him for another partygoer.
The cause of the crush is still under investigation, though officials said there were no gas leaks or fires on site.
28.What do we know about the deadly Halloween disaster in Seoul?
    A. Rescue and first aid were provided by authorities immediately.
    B. As much as 151 were killed, most of whom were foreign residents and tourists.
    C. For the past two years, public events have been banned to ensure people safety at Itaewon.
    D. Celebrating Halloween is not unusual for Itaewon.
29.Why were the crowds so big on this Saturday night?
    A. Because tens of thousands of people flooded into the area to celebrate Halloween.
    B. Because there were not any officials trying to limit the number of people entering the area.
    C. Because the official was not monitoring crowd amount in real time.
    D. Because the country lifted pandemic restrictions.
30.What does the underlined word " solid " in paragraph 7 mean?
    A. completely hard, not soft B. without any spaces
    C. not liquid or gas D. certain or safe
    31.What was the official response?
    A. They had sent a large number of police and security forces to this part of Seoul.
    B. They still didn’t know how the traditional Halloween celebrations turned into a disaster.
    C. They had called an emergency meeting.
    D. They had identified the dead.
    D
Like many who share their homes with a cat, I often talk to the miniature predator (小型掠食者)who sleeps on my pillow. Mostly, I ask Ophelia whether she wants food or snuggles (依偎). I know she hears me—her oversize ears rotate (转动 ) like furry satellite dishes in my direction as soon as I open my mouth. What’s less clear is whether she is aware I am addressing her.
Anew study in Animal Cognition shows that she probably does.
Charlotte de Mouzon, fellow cat lover and ethologist—a scientist who studies animal behavior—has devoted her career to understanding the cat-human bond from the kitty’s perspective.
De Mouzon designed a series of experiments to test how pet cats of various breeds(品种) responded to hearing recordings of their owners and of strangers talking to them.
She first recorded the owners speaking specific phrases, such as “Do you want to play?”, “Do you want a treat?”, and “See you later.” Their voices were recorded twice: once as if they were talking to their cat, and once as if they were speaking to a person.
Recordings in hand, De Mouzon conducted the next stage of the experiments in the cats’ homes, where the animals were comfortable and would respond naturally. At each home, she played audio recordings of both the cat’s owner and strangers speaking the same phrases, while video recording the cat’s responses.
The cats responded when they heard their owners using cat-directed speech, but not human-to-human speech. They also did not show a response when they heard a stranger’s voice, whether using cat talk or adult talk. This indicated that the cats could recognize when their owners were talking to them, de Mouzon says.
“This really important,” says Marsha Reijgwart, an ethologist at Purr Doctors, an educational research facility in the Netherlands, who wasn’t involved in the study.
“It’s an indication that cats really can distinguish that the sound they’re hearing is relevant to them.”
And de Mouzon said her research should give cat owners confidence that their pets are likely listening to them.
“Even knowing cats aren’t human babies,” she says, “we can still talk to them in a way they’re sensitive to and that can reinforce (加固) our bond.”
    32. According to the writer, can the cat recognize its owner’s voice?
    A. Yes. B. No. C. Seldom. D. Doubtfully.
33.Which of the following statements is True?
    A. When the owner of the cat says “See you later.”, his cat will respond.
    B. When a guest says “See you later.”, the host’s cat will respond.
    C. When the owner of the cat says “See you later.” as if he were talking to his cat, his cat will respond.
    D. When the owner of the cat says “See you later.” as if he were talking to his guest, his cat will respond.
34.How did De Mouzon draw the conclusion that the cats are sensitive to their owners voice?
    A. She makes friends with the writer.
    B. She carries out a series of experiments.
    C. She makes friends with some cats.
    D. She records the owners speaking specific phrases.
35.What is the best title for the text?
    A. Your cat can recognize your voice. B. Cat – a kind of smart pet
    C. Can you speak cat-directed langue? D. Your cat can understand you.

It was the middle of the day with bright sun, blue sky, green grass, and a soft breeze (微风). It was a great day to play outside and the best day of my life because I got a new ball and a new bike as my sixth birthday presents, and I was visiting my cousin, Kristy, at her house.
“Here I go!” shouted David while kicking my new ball. David lived next door and was older than me. I thought he was a wild child, but he was actually very kind. The ball went flying as if it were going to space. “That was high!” Kristy said in surprise and we went after the ball. We all had a great time.
Later we had supper and the food my aunt made was good. While Kristy was helping do the dishes, David and I ran outside to play. We started taking turns riding my bike. David suggested that we ride it to the forest. And I agreed, David and I got on the bike and David started going fast.
As we rode through the forest, I felt the wind brushing my face. It felt so great and free. Suddenly the bike hit a fallen branch and we went flying off the bike. Lying on the ground, I felt dizzy (眩晕). I checked myself for injuries and saw some but they didn’t bother me.
“David!” I shouted out loudly and anxiously.
“Hey”, said a voice. I turned my head and it was David, who was standing behind me, holding my broken bike. At the sight of my disabled bike, I was so sad that I couldn’t hold back my tears. It took David some time to calm me down.

【原文】W: Mr Wilson, students from Class 2 want to visit the History Museum. Will it be all right if I take them there this weekend?
M: How about their revision test? Are they through with it?
    W: Yes, they are.
M: In that case, you can go ahead. Try to finish it within one day so that the students still have a whole day to rest on Sunday.
    W: All right, I’ll manage.
    【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C
【原文】M: Hi, Linda. Fancy seeing you here. How long have you been shopping?
W: Almost an hour. I have a lot to buy. My daughter Melissa’s birthday is coming. I’m trying to get her a good gift, but I don’t know what to choose. She seems to have everything she loves.
M: Yeah, the same as Clara. We’ve already had bags of toys she’s no longer playing with. So this year we didn’t buy her material things. We gave her an experience gift.
    W: What’s that?
M: A city pass with which she can visit twelve different attractions, including the National History Museum, the Science Museum, the zoo and more.
    W: How much is it?
M: Fifty dollars per person for a year-long pass. I bought three for the whole family.
W: So you can have a different outing every month for the entire year. What a great idea!
    【答案】11. B 12.A 13.A
    【原文】M: Helen, busy doing anything?
W: Oh, Kevin. I’m preparing a presentation for the city library. It’s about a girl named Tracy Woods.
    M: What’s special about her?
W: It was an amazing story. She brought specially trained dogs to special education schools and helped children to build confidence. She believes that dogs can help children in ways we can’t. Dogs don’t judge and they don’t care who you are or what you look like.
M: But, putting dogs into a school. Aren’t they going to mess up the school?
W: Don’t worry. All the dogs are assessed and trained properly. There are now 40 dogs working with children aged from 6 to 18.
M: I hope the children love them.
W: Of course, they do. I’ve got some pictures. I’ll show them at my presentation tomorrow morning.
    【答案】14. C 15. C 16.A 17. B
【原文】M: Emily, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer a few questions.
    W: It’s my pleasure.
M: People say you’re doing unpaid work in the new season of My Fair Lady. Is this what the show business has become?
W: No, not really. All of my acting in the new season is unpaid, but the crew is paid. This is to raise money for the post-production of the show.
M: I notice you’ve tried many different kinds of things: film, TV, and even theatre.
W: Yeah, that’s how I was trained at university. I work on anything that excites me.
M: Tell us about the six months you recently spent at the workshop of the Film Centre.
W: It was an unbelievable experience, teaching young actors and actresses, and working with some great acting artists. It was also great to work in various labs, such as directors, writers and so on. It’s very helpful for making you a really well-rounded and active member of the film and television industry.
M: Thank you very much, Emily. We look forward to your new season.
    【答案】18.A 19. B 20. C
【原文】Hi, everyone! This is the monthly meeting of our club. We’ve been fortunate to have got good advice from some famous athletes on how to improve our skills and build up our body. Today, we’ll hear something different. We’re honored to have Emma Wilson here. Emma is a health expert and lecturer from UBC, the University of British Columbia. Emma worked for a football team in Manchester, then for a very successful rugby team in Dublin, and finally ended up working here in Vancouver. Emma says it’s challenging to be a health expert, because people can be easily influenced by advertisements that lack scientific support. Also, people aren’t willing to change their views about food and nutrition, as there is so much confusing information online. It’s really important to hear what experts say and that’s why we’ve invited Emma here. She isn’t going to tell us about everything we should eat, but she will teach us to make better choices. Let’s welcome Emma Wilson.

    第四部分 书面表达(满分40分)
    第一节 应用文写作(满分15分)
    The person I respect
There are many respectable people around us. I have great admiration for Zhang Dingyu, who is the former president of the Jinyintan Hospital in Wuhan.
He suffers from ALS, but when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, Zhang Dingyu did not tell anyone about his illness. He stuck to his post day and night, saving one life after another. Owing to his great contributions, Zhang Dingyu was awarded the national honorary title “The People’s Hero” on September 8, 2020.
It is his heavy responsibilities with a strong mind and courage that not only encourage me but most importantly shape our character.
    第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
    【答案】Paragraph 1
When we realized it was time to walk home, we found ourselves lost. It was getting darker and darker. I felt so scared that tears rolled down my face again. David attempted to comfort me. He told me that he once made some marks on the trees in the forest, which might help us find the way home. Therefore, we made efforts to look for the marks but in vain. Having walked anxiously for about an hour in the forest, we failed to find our way out.
    Paragraph 2
It was completely dark when we saw fireworks(烟火) being set off in the distance. We ran excitedly in that direction as fast as possible. Soon we found my aunt’s house, in front of which my cousin Kristy was holding some fireworks and lighting them. Seeing us back safe, Kristy cheerfully hugged us. She told us that when noticing we had been away for long, she was concerned about our safety. She set off fireworks to draw our attention and guide us. It was an unforgettable experience. Without David’s comfort and Kristy’s fireworks, I would have lost in the forest forever.
He told me that he once made some marks on the trees in the forest, which might help us find the way home. We ran excitedly in that direction as fast as possible. So on we found my aunt’s house, in front of which my cousin Kristy was holding some fireworks and lighting them.
    这里的非限制性定语从句补充说明性强,显示高级的英语水平,精准掌握了从句使用的要领;续写部分构思巧妙,衔接自然,思路清晰自然,表达完整,为一篇优秀的作品。
