Noa Mintz has started her own nanny ( 保姆 ) agency since August 2012. She employed Allison Johnson in 2014 to take charge of day-to-day business operations while she attended her first year of high school. She rents a room in an office building in Midtown Manhattan where Johnson works.

Like any teenager, Noa has had to depend on her parents for some help. Her father is the registered owner of her business. He’s helped raise front money for legal fees. But Nannies by Noa is all her brainchild. The idea came about as a result of a challenge made by her mother: find a better nanny for their family.

She did just that, and then she started helping her mother’s friends find nannies. “I found it fun to get to know a family and their needs ― and especially to find a nanny,” she said. So, Nannies by Noa was born. It was the summer of 2012, before she entered 7th grade.

She’s designed a thorough review process: an application, an in-person interview with a trained nanny, the reference and background check and a phone interview. Her business has seen a considerable success: from 50 clients (客户) in 2013 to 190 clients today.

At first, she charged $100 to $200. “I wasn’t charging enough. Even clients would say, ‘You realize you should be charging way, way more,’”added Noa, whose clients are mostly looking for long-term help. She’s changed her business model since: Nannies by Noa now takes a percentage of the overall rate, which is usually 15% of the nanny’s first year gross salary.

While Noa said she has other business ideas, she also would consider other careers. “Perhaps I’ll start another company. We will see,” said Noa.

    24. How does Allison help Noa?

    A. She rents an office for Noa.

    B. She helps operate Noa’s business.

    C. She teaches Noa her school lessons.

    D. She puts money into Noa’s nanny agency.

    25. What do we know about Nannies by Noa?

    A. It was the idea of Noa’s mother.

    B. It was legally registered by Noa.

    C. It aims to match nannies with families.

    D. It offers nanny-related jobs to teenagers.

    26. What changes did Noa make to her business model?

    A. She employed trained nannies.

    B. She changed charging standards.

    C. She raised nannies’ salaries.

    D. She interviewed applicants in person.

    27. What can we learn from Noa’s story?

    A. Fame is a great thirst of the young.

    B. A youth is to be regarded with respect.

    C. A good idea and action result in success.

    D. Success means getting family needs satisfied.

    C

South Korea has the highest rate of Internet addiction in the world and it is increasingly the country’s children who are spending every waking moment immersing themselves in fantasy role plays or gaming. In the remote mountains of South Korea, teenage Internet addicts are turning up for a 12-day boot camp.

Kyle Won’s addiction is out of control. He spends 10 hours a day on the Internet. Now Kyle’s smartphone is taken away. The teachers here do what they can to get them socializing again; for many, the only friends they have had are online. “I have relationships on the Internet and a real distance has grown with my real-life friends and I know it’s not good,” Kyle said. The teachers show them other possibilities and bring back dreams and hopes that have been buried by their addictions. “We teach them methods of managing their desire to use the Internet so that they can continue to use it when they go back home,” Shim Yong-chool, a teacher here, said. After just two days Kyle said it was helpful. He’s set a good example to others though he hasn’t reached the goal completely.

South Korean psychiatrists (精神病专家) are urging more action as they are finding evidence that too much screen time is a barrier to the developing minds. Professor Kang Seak Young from Dankook University said the addiction was damaging critical thinking. “It affects the frontal lobes (额叶) which are important to critical analysis,” Professor Kang said. “Reading a book and guessing what happens in the story next show activity in frontal lobes but playing popular computer games for a long time shows no activity.”

South Korea is one of the most wired nations on Earth, but it does have a cost. One in every ten kids is an addict, so the country is now learning how to manage its high-tech future to avoid more serious consequences.

    28. What do the teachers in the camp teach teenagers to do?

    A. Self-manage their smartphones.

    B. Attain something beyond the Internet.
    C. Make online friends more wisely.

    D. Keep away from electronic products.

    29. Why does the author mention Kyle’s story?

    A. He faced the most serious addiction.

    B. He has succeeded in kicking the addiction.

    C. He’s the representative of the addicts.

    D. He participated in the camp actively.

    30. What does Paragraph 3 intend to tell us?

    A. The importance of offline reading.

    B. The effects of frontal lobes on thinking.

    C. The popularity of kids’ Internet games.

    D. The harm of Internet addiction to brains.

    31. Which saying can explain the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?

    A. There are two sides to every coin.

    B. No pain, no gain.

    C. It’s good to learn at another man’s cost.

    D. Prevention is better than cure.

    D

As people get older, the types and numbers of friends they have tend to change. As young adults, humans have large groups of friends. With age, they often prefer to spend their time with just a few close, positive individuals. Researchers long believed that this aging attraction toward meaningful relationships was unique to humans, but a new study finds that chimps (大猩猩) also have similar tendencies.

Rosati and her colleagues used 78,000 hours of observations made over 20 years from the Kibale Chimpanzee Project in Uganda. The data looked at the social interactions of 21 male chimps between 15 and 58 years old. The researchers only studied male chimps because they show stronger social bonds and have more social interactions than female chimps.

Researchers found that wild chimpanzees share a similar pattern of social aging with humans. Rosati says, “They prefer strong, mutual social bonds and interact with others in more positive ways as they get older.” The older chimpanzees preferred spending more time with chimps that they had become friends with over the years. They would sit close to these long-time companions and groom (梳毛) each other. By contrast, younger chimps had more one-sided relationships where they would groom a friend, but the action wasn’t returned.

Older male chimps were also more likely to spend more time alone. The researchers said that they showed a shift from negative interactions to more positive ones, preferring to spend their later years in non-confrontational ( 非对抗性的 ), positive relationships. Researchers call the preference a “positivity bias”.

Researchers theorize that chimps, like humans, are able to change their social focus as they age. “We propose that this aging pattern may be the result of shared changes in our abilities to regulate our emotions with age,” Rosati says. “This shared pattern between chimpanzees and humans could represent an adaptive response where older adults focus on important social relationships that provide benefits and avoid interactions that have negative consequences as they lose competitive fighting ability.”

    32. What does the new study find about chimps?

    A. Male chimps show more interactions than females.

    第5页共8页
    B. Old chimps don’t care about friends as much as young ones.

    C. Chimps concentrate more on meaningful relations with age.

    D. Chimps share aging problems similar to human beings.

    33. How did Rosati and her colleagues conduct their research?

    A. By studying the data provided by other researchers.

    B. By making scientific investigations and observations.

    C. By setting up models on the computer in the lab.

    D. By monitoring both the humans’ and chimps’ behavior.

    34. What do researchers think causes this aging attraction to meaningful relationships?

    A. Inability to regulate emotions. B. Eagerness to build closer relationships.

    C. Loss of competitiveness in strength. D. Failure to adapt to the changeable nature.

    35. Where does this text probably come from?

    A. A short story collection. B. A popular science magazine.

    C. A graduate research paper. D. A biology textbook.

    第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 An improvement in the immune system (免疫系统)process would not be a good thing. It would

mean your immune system was overactive, and overactive immune systems can lead to some problems.

    36
Don’t worry! Here are some basic steps you can take to ensure it is normal and thus functioning.

    Get enough sleep.
    37
It makes your body easier to get sick, as does an irregular sleep schedule.

A single night of only 4 to 5 hours of sleep causes your natural killer cells to drop by 70%. Increase your chances of fending off illness by allowing yourself a solid 7 to 9 hours of shut-eye nightly.

Eat well. Fuel your body by eating a wide range of plant-based, fiber-rich, and colorfully varied foods. There is no strong scientific evidence for any specific type of food being linked to better immune function, so you can ignore the supplements ( 增补药 ) being marketed toward the corona virus in particular. 38

Keep exercising. Exercise has many benefits. It helps to maintain immune health by getting white

blood cells moving through the body. 39 If you’re already feeling ill, however, you can continue

exercising as long as your symptoms are above the chest. If your conditions are further down, take a break for a few days.

40 This advice is everywhere these days, but don’t stop paying attention to it. Keep washing your hands! It’s the simplest and most effective protection against catching unwanted bacteria. Think about reducing places for bacteria to hide, such as under long fingernails and rings, either by wearing fewer of them or including in your hand-scrubbing.

    A. Practice good health habits.

    B. Bury your bad habits in the water.

    C. You might want it to function normally.

    D. It boosts feelings of well-being and happiness.

    E. Little sleep is like a giant welcome mat for illnesses.

    F. Focus on getting your nutrition from whole foods instead.

    G. You are going to be good at containing and fighting it off.
