2022年秋高2021级周考英语试题(一)时间:40分钟 分值:100分第一部分 阅读理解(共8小题,每小题5分,满分40分)AEducation is a key component in the health and functioning of a society; but, in the US, education has steadily worsened due to a serious lack of teachers. This has created a cascading effect as existing teachers are required to take on more classes while remaining underpaid for their increased work, resulting in additional pressure which pushes teachers to leave the job market. The COVID-19 pandemic did much to disrupt the job market for teachers in the US, but is not the cause of this continued downturn; rather, it simply worsened factors already in play (在起作用的). Rural and poorer areas in the US often lack the resources to supply or pay teachers adequately. On top of that, starting salaries (起薪) for teachers in many states like Arizona and Missouri are too low to the point of being unable to attract new teachers - or, as The New York Times describes, are advertised embarrassingly “on social media and on billboards along ... highways”. In an attempt to fill these teaching jobs, states in the US have tried strange and unusual alternatives. For example, in Arizona, nearly four-fifths of teaching positions had to be filled by support staff or teachers in training. Some states have even sought ways to get around traditional qualifications altogether. For example, a new law was passed in Arizona which allows for those without a bachelor’s degree to teach in the classroom. Meanwhile, in Florida, former soldiers and police officers can be allowed to teach without formal education as an instructor. Some rural areas in Texas are switching to four-day weeks. Many of these fixes are likely to harm students by diminishing their ability to learn, predicted Dawn Etcheverry, president of the Nevada State Education Association. Despite billions of dollars invested by the US government in schools through the American Rescue Plan, it does not seem money alone will be enough to overcome these hurdles.1. What does the phrase “cascading effect” in paragraph 1 probably mean?A. Bad things are always unexpected.B. One bad thing can lead to another.C. Problems usually happen to the poor.D. Seemingly irrelevant things influence each other.2. What are paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about?A. The pandemic’s effects on the US job market.B. The factors contributing to the lack of resources in rural areas.C. The reasons for the teacher shortage in the US.D. The rural-urban gap in education in the US.3. What measures did Florida take to fix the teacher shortage?A. Untrained police officers can become teachers.B. People with a bachelor’s degree can teach.C. Workdays were changed to four days a week.D. Teachers in training can take teaching positions.4. What does the author suggest at the end of the text?A. Students’ ability to learn is the key to good education.B. The situation can be greatly improved with more money.C. More measures besides investment should be taken.D. The government should attach importance to education.BA strong hit to the head will normally give you a concussion (脑震荡). Woodpeckers, however, strike their beaks (喙) into trees thousands of times a day and are perfectly fine. We used to think that a woodpecker’s skull (头骨) worked as a kind of safety helmet which absorbed (吸收) the shocks. A new study by Sam Van Wassenbergh, a researcher at the University of Antwerp in Belgium, proved that this “common sense” was in fact false.Van Wassenbergh and his colleagues argued that, if a woodpecker’s head absorbed the force, it would not be able to strike the tree with enough force. “If the beak absorbed much of its own impact (冲击力), the unfortunate bird would have to pound even harder,” they said in their paper. In other words, if the theory were true, the woodpecker would have to peck even harder to compensate for both the shock-absorbing qualities of the sponge-like bone inside its skull as well as the density (密度) of the wood. The scientists recorded four different kinds of woodpeckers in zoos as they were pecking. The team used data from their high-speed recordings to build digital models of the woodpeckers. Van Wassenbergh described the woodpeckers’ motion as “a hammer (锤子) hitting wood” since their movement appeared rigid (僵硬的) and focused. The research suggested that woodpeckers don’t have any shock-absorbing device or the ability to reduce the amount of force. Although they are without “helmets”, the team claimed that the woodpeckers’ tiny size and weight protect them. A woodpecker’s brain is about 700 times smaller than that of a human. “Smaller animals can withstand higher decelerations (减速). Think about a fly that hits a window and then just flies back again,” Van Wassenbergh said. “So that is why even the hardest hits we observed are not expected to cause any concussion.” 5. What did people use to believe about woodpeckers when they peck trees?A. They could withstand(忍受) slight concussions.B. Their beaks could spread the shocks they produce.C. Their heads were able to reduce the impact.D. Their bodies were soft enough to absorb the force. 6. What does the underlined word “compensate for” in paragraph 4 probably mean?A. balance B. improveC. limit D. remove7. What did the experiment conducted by Van Wassenbergh and his colleagues prove?A. The shock absorber theory is mostly correct.B. How woodpeckers peck depends on their type.C. Density of the wood affects a woodpeckers’ pecking force.D. Woodpeckers do not have special safety devices.8. What protects a woodpecker from getting a concussion according to Van Wassenbergh?A. Its skull. B. Its size.C. Its beak. D. Its species.第二部分 英语知识运用第一节(共10小题,每小题2分,满分20分)阅读下面短文,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个词)或括号内单词的正确形式。We have been taught from ,1. ________ early age that red means stop and green means go in traffic signals (信号).
