Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen (一年级学生 ), you still feel anxious that you don’t know any upperclassmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces? Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation (迎新会) before school actually starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces. When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern (关注) with your classmates can help you develop friendships. The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced (高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Senior high school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.4How do the freshmen usually feel on their first day of senior high school?AProud. BCurious. CExcited. DNervous.5What are freshmen probably worried about?AThe ability to make friends. BThe learning task.CThe freshman orientation. DThe relationship with teachers.6What do after-school activities mainly help students to do?ADevelop their interests. BDevelop friendships.CBuild up their strength. DImprove their learning ability.7What is the last paragraph mainly about?AWhat you’ll learn in senior high school.BWhat you learned in junior high school.CThe difference between junior high school and senior high school.DThe importance of being more independent and responsible.C “Are personal sad stories a must to win talent shows?” “Shouldn’t talent be judged on the basis of itself without needing a sad story of struggle to win?” These are questions Sanya Malhotra posed on a recent Facebook post. This morning I came across this interesting post by Sanya Malhotra. She revealed that she loved dancing and dreamt of becoming an actress, but got defeated in “Dance India Dance” because her background story wasn’t sad and inspiring enough. That’s when she started doubting her artistic gift. This really set me thinking. Why are people attracted to sob stories? Why do we always appreciate only those people who have achieved something after going through a lot of hardships?  Why does the headline of a newspaper “Taxi-driver’s Son Stands First In UPSC Exam” find more readers? I think it is because most people, who are in a similar situation, find it comforting that someone has succeeded with so many hardships. I know it is really very difficult for people with financial, health, or family problems to overcome obstacles and succeed. I really feel proud of them and I am often touched and inspired by their stories. Now come back to what Sanya has said. I think this is a talent show rather than a story-telling competition. When it comes to a competition of singing or dancing or any fine arts, all the competitors should be judged without any bias (偏见). No one should lose because they don’t have a sad story of struggle to tell. It’s very unfair. They can be given opportunities otherwise, but should not be judged because of their stories.Maybe, the TV channels do it to attract more viewers, because the most important element of any reality show is these touching stories. But as Sanya has said, it’s unfair to those who haven't such a story and are equally talented.8What do we know about Sanya Malhotra?AShe entered a talent show. BShe won “Dance India Dance”.CShe had a sad story to tell. DShe was rejected in a film.9From the second paragraph, we can infer that Sanya Malhotra________.Aexperienced many hardships Bis a famous actress in IndianChas a great gift for gymnastics Dused to be confident in her artistic talent10Which of the following headlines appeals to the readers most according to the passage?AA Millionaire Donated Money To Harvard University.BA Gifted Indian Teenager Won “Dance India Dance”.CAn Armless Girl Was Admitted To Harvard University.DA Freshman Paid Off Loans By Getting A Part-time Job.11Which of the following is the best title of the passage?AWinners Should Be Determined By Public JudgesBSanya Malhotra Displayed A Great Artistic GiftCCompetitors Should Not Be Judged By Sob StoriesDTalent Shows Competitors Can Tell Their StoriesD“Patience” is a word that you have probably heard a lot! But you may wonder, “What on earth is patience, and why does everyone keep telling me to have it?”※Patience is waiting for something or someone. It is accepting delay without getting angry or upset!※ It is waiting for someone else to speak when you have something to say!※ It is waiting to eat before everyone is at table!※It is waiting for your birthday even though you may want a present now!※ Patience is trying something again when you want to give up.Patience doesn’t sound like much fun. And to be truthfulsometimes, it’s not. And with so much technology in the worldwe don’t always have to be patient. For example, we are able to stream our favorite TV shows on our cell phones, go to restaurants where food is served hot and fast, among many other things. So, why wait when we can have everything right now? Because just about any successful person has patience. Many good and important things take patience. For example, most great inventors and explorers have a lot of patience!※When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, it took him over 1,000 tries!※It took the Wright Brothers years to invent the airplane!※It took 8 years to send a man to the moon!※ It takes between 150 and 300 days to travel from Earth to Mars!If great inventors did not have patience and self-control, you would likely not be reading this right now. In fact, you might be living in a cave or tent somewhere. You would have no electricity, no car, no school and almost certainly no Internet!12In which of the following cases is “patience” needed?AWhen you are sitting at the dinner table.BWhen you are speaking.CWhen you are receiving a present.DWhen you have given up trying.13What does the author think about a cell phone?AIt’s a funny invention. BIt makes us less patient.CIt reduces our waiting time. DIt helps us to communicate.14What can we conclude from the last paragraph?AGreat inventions call for patience. BWe have to take control of ourselves.CGreat discoveries can be made in a cave. DOur society can’t do without electricity.15What’s the main purpose of the text?ATo sell. BTo advertise.CTo persuade. DTo introduce.第二节(共5题;每小题2分,满分10分)How to Handle Being the New Kid at SchoolBeing the new kid at school can be a terrible experience!
