Since the very year I was born, South Jersey has been a part of me. Since both of my grandparents have lived in the area for many decades, my family has visited South Jersey yearly since 2014. Its warm and lively feel is very appealing to many families that are looking for an easy and fun getaway.
Every summer we pile into the car and drive four hours away to the Seaview Hotel and Club, a wonderful place which is located in Galloway, 20 minutes from the beach and boardwalk (木板人行道). The Seaview is enticing and quite inexpensive as well, which is perfect for any family. The rooms are neat, and the breakfasts are a real attraction, even to adults. I have always loved going down to their lovely outdoor swimming pool in the mornings and then ordering a lunch from The Coastal Grille, the hotel’s main restaurant. The Seaview is really great, and somewhere else is even more exciting.
At the end of every day in South Jersey, my family always makes it an important goal to drive to the local beach and boardwalk, Ocean City. Ocean City is wonderful with great swimming, lots of pizza places, ice cream stands, and excellent rides and games.
After dinner, we always check out “Gillian’s Pier,” the impressive and exciting, yet small amusement area located on the boardwalk. It is lots of fun to ride on bumper car (碰碰车) and rollercoaster and to taste soft serve ice creams and cotton candy. Next door, there is even a video arcade (游戏厅), so overall South Jersey is your classic family summer vacation. I would definitely recommend visiting, even just for a weekend, someday.
4. Why has the author visited South Jersey every year since 2014?
A. Because it is by the sea.
B. Because he was born there.

A. To show the attraction of South Jersey.
B. To show his living conditions.
C. To show it’s convenient to go to South Jersey.
D. To show his preference for tourism.
7. What may be the best title for the text?

D. My hometown, South Jersey
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. A 7. A

Professor Veena Sahajwalla, 2022 Australian of the year, has created a solution to our massive trash problem: waste microfactories. These little trash processors (处理器)-some as small as 500 square feet- house a scries of machines that recycle waste and transform it into new materials with thermal technology (热技术). The new all-in -one approach could leave our current recycling processes in the dust.
In 2018 she launched the first microfactory establishing a model of recycling that enables businesses and communities to develop commercial opportunities while addressing local waste problems. A second one began recycling plastics in 2019. Now, her lab group is working with university and industry partners to commercialize their patented Microfactory technology. “The small scale of the machines will make it easier for them to one day operate on renewable energy, unlike most large manufacturing plants. The approach will also allow cities to recycle waste into new products on location, avoiding the long, often international, high-emission journeys between recycling processors and manufacturing plants. With a microfactory, gone are the days of needing separate facilities to collect and store materials, extract (提取) elements and produce new products,” says Sahajwalla.
Traditionally, recycling plants break down materials for reuse in similar products-like melting down plastic to make more plastic things. Sahajwalla’s invention advances this idea by taking materials from an old product and creating something different. “The kids don’t look like the parents,” she says. Sahajwalla refers to this process as “the fourth R,” adding “re-form” to the common phrase “reduce, reuse, recycle”.
Professor Veena Sahajwalla’s programs help to develop innovation and promote cooperation with industry, ensuring that sustainable materials and processes become commercially practical solutions for dealing with waste.
8. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce a new type of trash processor.
B. To introduce the process of recycling waste.
C. To prove the seriousness of the trash problem.
D. To show the current situation of trash recycling.
9. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The origin of waste microfactories.
B. The advantages of waste microfactories.
C. The influences of waste microfactories.
D. The shocking scale of waste microfactories.
10. What does “re-form” in Paragraph 3 refer to according to Sahajwalla?
A. Generating new materials with waste.
B. Extracting materials from the waste.
C. Updating the whole recycling process.
D. Transforming waste into similar products.
11. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A fiction novel.
B. A business report.
C. A science magazine.
D. A chemical textbook.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. A 11. C

An IT company from Finland has developed a new font(字体)which uses machine learning to rewrite bad language into kinder words.
More than a third of bullying(欺凌) takes place online, and the numbers are on the rise, according to a report by the United Nations’ educational organization UNESCO. TietoEVRY developed the Polite Type font as a new tool to deal with online bullying among kids, pointing out harmful language and causing users to pick kinder words.
As users try to write hurtful English words, the font will automatically replaca them.
Writing “I hate you” would, for example, result in the milder “I disagree with you” when Polite Type is used on the computer. Sentences such as “you are ugly” is replaced with “you are not traditionally beautiful” while rude words are blurred(使模糊)completely. The company says it is the first example where a blur has been used as a symbol in a font package. Racial slurs(种族歧视语)are replaced with the racial group the slur is related to, rather than blurring the word entirely.
The vocabulary of the font was co-created with teenagers from Finland. The font’s library of words was chosen to include language from different origins, religions, and world views, and will make adjustments as more people and businesses use it. In the future, TietoEVRY suggests that machine learning could be used to teach the font to understand how language is used. Polite Type can be now downloaded and used for free.
“We want bullies to rethink the words they use and the actual meaning behind them,” said Kia Haring, global head of communication and sustainability at TietoEVRY. “I hope that our cause acts as a wake-up call for all audiences to consider how bullying could be handled.”
12. What is special about the Polite Type font according to the text?
A It includes a wider vocabulary.
B. It consists of words and symbols.
C. It hides all the unusual expressions.
D. It prefers long sentences to short ones.
13. What can we expect of the Polite Type font in the Future?
A. It will have more words blurred.
B. More racial groups will use it.
C. It will be constantly updated.
D. Users will be charged with using it.
14. What does Kia Haring think of creating the Polite Type font?
A. Imperfect.
B. Unsuccessful.
C. appealing.
D. Inspiring.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Polite Type: the self-developing font
B. A font automatically avoids racial slurs
C. Show others kindness by using a new font
D. A font designed to fight online bullying
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. D

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“The font’s library of words was chosen to include language from different origins, religions, and world views, and will make adjustments as more people and businesses use it. In the future, TietoEVRY suggests that machine learning could be used to teach the font to understand how language is used.(该字体的词汇库包括了来自不同起源、宗教和世界观的语言,并将随着更多的人和企业使用它而做出调整。TietoEVRY认为,在未来,机器学习可以用来教字体理解语言是如何使用的。)”可知,在未来,Polite Type这种字体会不断更新。故选C项。
【14题详解】

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It’s funny that you can always tell when somebody’s laughing behind your back. Jodie hadn’t really heard anything, maybe a whisper, but when she turned around, the girls in the back row of the class were looking at her, trying to hide smiles and laughs. She looked back at her teacher. Mr Swales was talking about what people do all day. He also wanted to find out what his students wanted to be when they grew up.
He called on Billy Miter first. “My daddy works in a bank,” Billy Miter said. “I guess I want to work in a bank too. There’s lots of money in the bank.” My parents have a grocery store,” Emmy Disal said. “Papa’s behind the counter and Mama keeps the cash register. But I want to be an airline pilot.”
Jodie liked it when Mr Swales asked them questions like this. He was about to call on Jodie when the girls in the back row burst out laughing.
Shirley Danes yelled, “Jodie’s daddy is a garbage man!”
Everybody in the class laughed out loud. Everybody except Jodie, that is. She felt her face turn bright red. She looked around the whole classroom. Everyone was laughing. Some kids were even holding their noses.
Jodie looked at Mr Swales. He was angry. He almost never raised his voice, but now he did.
“Silence! I want everybody to quiet down this instant.”
The laughter stopped immediately. The sound of cars and people going by out on the street came through the windows.” You should be ashamed of yourselves,” Mr Swales said. “Being a garbage man… I mean, is a difficult and enormously useful job. We should all be grateful to Mr Harris. Where would we be without him? Up to our cars in garbage, that’s where. How would you like that?”
“It’s not funny,” Mr Swales went on. “Garbage is a serious matter. I think you all owe Jodie an apology. And after that, you’re all going to write Jodie’s father, Mr Harris, a nice letter to tell him how much you appreciate what he does for all of us. In other words, keeping our city clear.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Everyone said “Sorry, Jodie”, but Jodie could tell they didn’t really mean it.

Jodie’s father came to walk her home from school as usual.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph l:
Everyone said “Sorry, Jodie” but Jodie could tell they didn’t really mean it. Jodie also knew nobody wanted to write her father a letter. Her face was burning red and she felt like crying. Mr Swales came to her desk and patted her shoulder.” Let’s go out in the hall while everyone’s writing those letters so we can have a private talk.” Jodie started crying out in the hall. “I’m sorry this happened.” Mr Swales said. “But remember, hard work done well is something to be proud of.”
Paragraph 2:
Jodie’s father came to walk her home from school as usual. She didn’t run up to him the way she always did. When they arrived home, Jodie went to her little room and cried for a good long time before she had her supper. Mr Harris noticed her red eyes and asked “What happened, Jodie?” Jodie told her father what had happened and looked at him. He didn’t seem angry. He laughed and said, “Although my work seems to be a humble one, my devotion to the job will be everlasting and encouraging.”
