Most American children eat potatoes. But many children don't know what part of the potato is the best for food. Take a knife and cut from the middle of the potato a piece as thin as paper. Hold the piece between your eyes and light. You'll see that the potato has skin,an outside rim and an inside part. The outside rim which is right under the skin of the potato,is the most valuable part of all. But this is often thrown away with the skin. Even the skin itself is better for food than the inside. When eating a cooked potato,if you choose the inside and leave the outside, you are throwing the best part of it. If you can't eat the whole potato, eating the outside rim and leaving the inside will do.

We talk every day. When we have good news,we like to share it with our good friends and when something terrible happens,we will let others know soon. But do you know that a tree can talk and share news?It sounds strange, but it's true that some trees can also communicate with each other. Of course,no tree moves lips and says words just as people do.
Willow trees(柳树) are the bestknown of these trees. When insects(昆虫) begin eating a willow tree, the tree gives out a special smell at once. This smell tells the other willow trees that insects are coming near. All of them quickly make a chemical(化学物质) in their leaves. This chemical is bad for the insects. The insects do not like it and they fly away soon. In this way,the willow trees keep themselves away from the insects.
Next time when you take a walk near the trees, maybe the trees are “talking” to each other quietly. And when someone says that trees cannot “talk”,please tell them that even trees can “talk” to each other, too.

Today there are 6.4 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion. There are many people to feed. We need more and more food.
One way to produce more food is growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983, scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic(遗传的) material. Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified (转基因的) foods, or GM foods.
By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. Scientists make plants which are strong against plant diseases (疾病). They can also help in our diseases: a kind of rice will be grown, for example, which stops people becoming blind.
Rich countries produce GM foods because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.
GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are. Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them because they are unnatural. They may feed people, and then hurt them or their children later. But both rich and poor countries are interested in their uses, and they are not going to go away. In 2050, we may think differently about them.

A. Because they are easy to grow and bring in more money.
B. Because they are easy to grow and very cheap.

D. Because they are the best plants.
39. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. GM plants are not natural.

Cyril Dick's house is neither a modern house nor a house of the future. It is 40 years old. There are more houses like that in the south of France. They are called “bubble houses”,and you can see why!
Cyril Dick is a designer and he loves round things. He collects old records and clocks. He also collects round furniture. And now he has a completely round house.
Everything in the “bubble house” is round. The centre of the house is one very big bubble. This is both the living room and dining room. There are round armchairs,a round table, and a big round rug (地毯) in front of a round fireplace. Around the living room are three small bubbles. One bubble is a kitchen with round shelves, another bubble is the garden room, and the third bubble is a music room. Upstairs there are two more bubbles—a bedroom and a bathroom.
The doors and windows are also round,of course. The windows are like eyes. There aren't any curtains (窗帘) in the house, because Cyril likes to see the garden all the time.
Bubble houses are the idea of a Hungarian architect (建筑师), Antti Lovag.“A lot of modern houses are bad for us,especially tall buildings of flats,” says Lovag.“Because round homes are more natural, people feel happy in them.” Cyril agrees with this.“Some people think my house is funny,” he says,“but for me,this is the perfect home.”
