    2022 Synchronous Fireflies Viewing Event
In order to protect critical firefly (萤火虫) habitat and provide the best visitor experience, we limit the viewing to 120 vehicles per night. Tickets will be required to enter the park in the evenings on those dates and will be available through a lottery (抽签) system hosted at www. recreation.gov/ticket/facility/320008.
The lottery system will open at 10: 00 a. m. on March 31 and will remain open until 10: 00 a. m. on April 6, with results to be announced on April 14. A non-refundable service fee of $1 will be charged by Recreation. gov to enter the lottery system. Participants selected through the lottery system will be required to pay a $19 non-refundable event fee to secure tickets ( $20 in total). Tickets will only be issued for passenger vehicles up to two axles (轮轴) that can fit in standard parking spaces (i. e. no motor homes, vehicles with trailers, buses or mini-buses).
Because of the large number of participants expected for this event, the following are prohibited on the Fireflies Trail:
    ● Dogs ( service dogs allowed)
    ● Flash photography
    ● Headlamps
    ● Using smartphones as flashlights
    ● Chairs, hammocks (吊床) or blankets
    ● Smoking
    ● Alcoholic beverages (酒水)
Participants are asked to observe the following viewing rules:
    ● Keep noise levels to a minimum so that everyone can enjoy this special natural occurrence.
    ● Capturing fireflies is not allowed within Congaree National Park.
    ● Stay on the designated trail ( walking off the trail can do harm to firefly habitat).
    ● Only use flashlights when absolutely necessary, pointing them straight down in order not to disturb other participants ( small penlights are recommended).
    1. How much will a participant pay to join in the event?
    A. 1 dollar. B. 19 dollars. C. 20 dollars. D. 21 dollars.
    2. What can the participants do in the park?

    【解析】
    【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了2022萤火虫观赏活动相关事项。
    【1题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“A non-refundable service fee of $1 will be charged by Recreation. gov to enter the lottery system. Participants selected through the lottery system will be required to pay a $19 non-refundable event fee to secure tickets ( $20 in total).(康体娱乐将收取1元服务费,费用概不退还。进入彩票系统。通过抽签系统被选中的参与者将被要求支付19美元的不可退还的活动费用以获得门票(总共20美元))”可知,参加者要付总共20美元才能参加活动。故选C项。
    2题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Tickets will only be issued for passenger vehicles up to two axles (轮轴) that can fit in standard parking spaces (i. e. no motor homes, vehicles with trailers, buses or mini-buses).(入场券只会发给两轴以下且能停放在标准停车位内的乘用车(即没有房车、拖车、巴士或小巴))”可知,房车不能进入公园,所以D项“晚上住在房车里”错误;根据第三段“Because of the large number of participants expected for this event, the following are prohibited on the Fireflies Trail: (由于本次活动预计会有大量的参与者,萤火虫小径上禁止进行以下活动:)”和其后小点“● Dogs ( service dogs allowed) (犬只(允许使用服务犬) )”与“● Flash photography( 闪光摄影)”可知,带宠物和用闪光灯拍照是不允许的,所以A、C项错误;由此可知,游客只能在萤火虫小径上步行。故选B项。
    【3题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章介绍了2022萤火虫观赏活动相关事项,故A项“Something about an event concerning watching fireflies.(与萤火虫观赏活动相关事项)”是文章讲的主要内容。故选A项。

James Warren was walking in his Denver neighborhood that day, and then he suddenly stopped because something gave him pause. “A woman was waiting for the bus, sitting in the dirt. And I was like, ‘Oh man, that is so bad. ’ We need to be doing better for our fellow city members, ”Warren told reporters. And so, I thought, ‘I could do something about that. ‘ That moment led him on a mission to help his community.
Warren found some wood, thanks to building sites in his neighborhood with piles of waste wood. And, because his dad builds homes, he grew up around tools——he knew he had the basic skills needed to build a bench.
He built one soon and put it back at that bus stop where he first got the idea. Since then, he’s built eight custom benches and has placed them at bus stops around the area. Each bench looks different, since he’s using scrap(废料)wood he could find. “I just kind of let the wood speak to me,” he said. Each one takes a few hours to build, and Warren hand delivers them to bus stops without sitting areas. “I have not asked the city yet whether I’m allowed to do this......Until they stop me, I’ll just keep doing it,”he added. While each bench is unique, James makes sure to burn or stencil (模印) in the same message on all of them: “Be kind.”
“Sometimes it’s difficult to really make a change in the world around us. But the truth is, anyone can be kind. And by being kind, you can make a difference in the world around you,” he said.
He’s heard from several people in the community—those who use the benches and those who help Warren find some wood by taking chairs they were going to throw out or that somebody else was throwing out and putting them at bus stops instead of letting them go to landfill.
    4. Why did Warren stop at a bus stop one day?
    A. He was lost in his thought. B. He was upset by a scene.
    C. He wanted to help someone. D. He saw something interesting.
    5. What can we know about Warren’s benches?
    A. They were created with complex skills.
    B. They were of different sizes and shapes.
    C. They were banned by the city government.
    D. They were made at the request of the community.
    6. What’s Warren’s purpose in putting a message on his benches?
    A. To give a warning. B. To advertise his products.
    C. To encourage kindness. D. To call for community unity.
    7. What’s a suitable title for the text?
    A. Benches badly needed at Denver bus stops.
    B. Denver man builds benches for bus stops.
    C. Man’s kindness is rewarded by his community.
    D. Building benches from scrap wood.
    【答案】4 C 5. B 6. C 7. B

Honey in general has long been praised for its antibacterial (抗菌的)power. But manuka honey is thought to be an even stronger infection fighter, and some studies suggest that manuka honey’s benefits extend to treating skin problems.
“ All honey has some antibiotic qualities,” explains Frances largeman-Roth, RD, nutritionist and author of Eating in Color. “ In typical honey, it is hydrogen peroxide that provides this benefit, whereas in manuka honey, it’s UMF that is antibiotic.” UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor, a grading system that uses a scale of 5 to 20 to measure each batch of honey’ s antibacterial strength. The higher the UMF number, the stronger manuka honey’ s antibacterial properties——meaning it can be used to treat wounds, cuts, bums, and even bedsores, says Largeman-Roth.“ Types of manuka honey that possess a UMF content of 12 or higher are actually considered medical grade, and can be added to bandages to treat wounds, ”she says.
Why does manuka honey have such a good reputation for healing wounds and dealing with infection? “Honey is very low in moisture (水分) content, says Largeman-Roth. “When you put it on a wound, all the liquid in the wound gets drawn into the honey because it has the ability to absorb the moisture. By absorbing all the impurities (杂质),the honey protects the body against infection. Medical grade manuka can also restore the natural pH of the skin and remove dead tissue when used topically, ”she adds.
Robert Graham, a physician specializing in integrative medicine, also says that manuka honey can be used in medical settings. “There is evidence for the use of manuka honey for problems such as acute burns, diabetic ulcers (溃疡),and arterial ulcers,” he tells Health. “Particularly for wounds, manuka honey prevents infections, speeds up healing, and has also been shown to decrease the risk of developing community-acquired MRSA, a potentially dangerous staph infection.”
“Anyone who is allergic to bees should use manuka honey with caution. Otherwise, it’s a win-win with little side effects,” says Dr. Graham.
    8. Which type of manuka honey is the best for skin treatment?
    A. UMF 5 + . B. UMF10 +. C. UMF 12 + . D. UMF 15 +.
    9. Why is honey often used for treating wounds?
    A. It has a higher moisture level. B. It provides nutrition for the skin.
    C. It has the ability to kill bacteria. D. It removes impurities from the skin.
    10. What does the fourth paragraph focus on?
    A. The benefits of manuka honey. B. The process of wounds healing.
    C. Largeman-Roth’s medical theory. D. The popularity of manuka honey.
    11. What’s Robert Graham’s general attitude to manuka honey’s medical use?
    A. Supportive. B. Doubtful.
    C. Cautious. D. Ambiguous.
    【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. A

There are 7 billion people in this world, with 7 billion different opinions about outer beauty. What you may find physically attractive can be an absolute eyesore to someone else and vice versa. And this is truly magical because it implies that regardless of a person’s physical features (特点), there is always going to be someone out there who finds them appealing.
Nowadays there are many ways you can manipulate the way you look. Plastic surgery (整形) and other cosmetic procedures are becoming more and more accessible and affordable. This is absolutely incredible for people who really need body changes to improve their mental health.
Sadly, with social media being a massive part of our lives, far too many people are struggling with self-image issues not because there is something wrong with them, but because they are convinced they need to look a certain way to be accepted by society. So they delve into (钻研) the world of plastic surgery and they slowly lose their identities in order to fit in.
In reality, what we should be encouraging is not altering our bodies, but remodeling our mindset. We should become more aware of the way we treat others and ourselves. We should be inspired to learn more languages, so we can dive into different cultures and expand our limits. Instead of spending money on looking like someone else, spend time in becoming the best version of yourself, because outer beauty fades, but the beauty within is timeless.
As noted by the book A Conscious Rethink, when asked about what traits (特性) they look for in a potential long-term partner, most people name things that have nothing to do with physical appearance. Some of the features we seek the most are Kindness, Loyalty, Patience, Integrity, A good sense of humor, and A supportive nature.
All of these traits can be found in anyone, regardless of the outer beauty they possess. More importantly, these are personality characteristics we seek in those we see as our potential life partners, meaning that we value them more than we value a pretty face.
    12. What does the underlined word "manipulate” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Check. B. Maintain.
    C. Manage. D. Appreciate.
    13. Why are many people seeking plastic surgery nowadays according to the text?
    A. To fit in with society. B. To indicate their identities.
    C. To improve their mental health. D. To cover their physical disability.
    14. What’s one feature of inner beauty according to the author?
    A. It’s long-lasting. B. It can be measured.
    C. It’s a natural-born thing. D. It varies from culture to culture.
    15. Which topic does A Conscious Rethink probably cover?
    A. Adventure. B. Relationship.
    C. Entertainment. D. Healthcare.
    【答案】12. C 13. A 14. A 15. B
