One of the longest ancient wooden bridges in China, located in Fujian province, collapsed on Saturday night after a fire broke out. No casualties(伤亡)or injuries were reported. Wan’an Bridge, which has a history of more than 900 years, in the village of Changqiao in Pingnan county caught fire at around 9:10 pm. The blaze was put out by 10: 45 pm, according to the local emergency management bureau.
There are more than 50 wooden arch bridges in Pingnan. Measuring almost 100 meters long and 5 meters wide, Wan’an Bridge is the oldest and longest wooden bridge in the country. A fire broke out on the bridge in the Qing Dynasty(1644~1911)and it was rebuilt in 1742. It was listed as a key national cultural relic in 2006. The construction of wooden arch bridges uses the most sophisticated techniques among all wooden bridges in China, and the techniques themselves were listed as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2009.
Although uncommon, fires at cultural sites around the country do happen. In 2014, a fire destroyed around 300 houses in Dukezong township in Shangrila county of Yunnan province. Dukezong, established more than 1, 300 years ago, is known for its Tibetan-style architecture. The fire burned nearly a fifth of the ancient town’s core preservation area.
In 2019, the National Cultural Heritage Administration and Ministry of Emergency Management issued a guideline on improving fire safety for cultural relics. It required museums and institutions with cultural relics to conduct fire safety check every two hours when open to the public.
According to China News Service, Pingnan county has set up special working groups to look into the incident and to try to restore the bridge. The local authorities are looking into the cause of the incident and the public security bureau has started an investigation.

C
The whole world knows them: actors, singers, models, athletes and TV personalities. If I use social media, I get too familiar.
I have nothing against the entertainment industry and celebrities. The problem is that by idolizing the entertainment industry so much, we sometimes completely forget about the things that are truly important and that are changing our world. You probably know who Leonardo DiCaprio is—a very talented American actor and film producer. But then you probably don’t know who Cori Bargmann is. Bargmann is a scientist who is uncovering the causes of Alzheimer’s and autism, which have been unknown for years.
What I think is wrong is that DiCaprio’s net worth is $260 million dollars, while Bargmann’s is less than $l million dollars. DiCaprio is definitely talented and has worked hard to give us good films, but Bargmann is working for something that can save thousands of humans who are suffering. And just because our society prefers to idolize the entertainment industry instead of science, she gets paid much less than she deserves.
But if it would benefit the world to invest all of our time and attention toward scientists, why don’t we make scientists our new “celebrities”?
First of all, we like being entertained. We love pretty faces and easy-to-digest information. It’s easier to care about simple stuff rather than scientific, complicated things. Another reason is that most scientists don’t like being in the spotlight. They’ re mostly reserved and like to have privacy. They’ re busy people, which explains why they haven’t attracted the media the same way that performers have. Also, people have free will and the right to be interested in whatever they want to be.
However, studies have shown that young people are more interested in a scientific career as a result of COVID-19. The pandemic has also made known some scientists who have suddenly started appearing on TV and guiding us on how to get protected from this deadly virus. Maybe that is the start of the development of a different point of view which will be in favor of science for future generations.
8. Why does the author mention Leonardo DiCaprio and Cori Bargmann?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To give an example.
C. To offer a definition. D. To propose a solution.
9. Why are scientists not as well-known as actors?
A. Scientists get paid much less than actors.
B. People are busy choosing what they like.
C. Scientists don’t feel like being paid attention to.
D. People prefer entertainment to complex science.
10. What does the word “that” underlined in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Studies make scientists known and accepted by the masses.
B. Young people want to change their jobs because of the pandemic.
C. People are attracted to science and scientists during a special time.
D. Most scientists gradually become willing to show up in public light.
11. What’s the author’s attitude toward entertainment stars?
A. Objective. B. Favorable.
C. Prejudiced. D. Indifferent.
B 9. D 10. C 11. A
根据第二段中的“The problem is that by idolizing the entertainment industry so much, we sometimes completely forget about the things that are truly important and that are changing our world. (问题在于,由于如此崇拜娱乐业,我们有时会完全忘记真正重要且正在改变我们世界的东西。)”可知,下文举例是为了说明上文中的主题,所以下文作者提到莱昂纳多·迪卡普里奥和科丽·巴格曼是为了举例说明科学家和演员不平等的现状。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段最后一句“And just because our society prefers to idolize the entertainment industry instead of science.(仅仅因为我们的社会更喜欢崇拜娱乐业而不是科学。)”
代词that一般指代的是上文中的内容,根据最后一段中的“The pandemic has also made known some scientists who have suddenly started appearing on TV and guiding us on how to get protected from this deadly virus.(大流行也让一些科学家广为人知,他们突然开始出现在电视上,指导我们如何保护我们免受这种致命病毒的侵害。)”
根据文章第二段第一句“I have nothing against the entertainment industry and celebrities.(我不反对娱乐圈和名人。)” 故选A项。
D
At the end of many sports tournaments and spelling bees, all the competitors are honored for their effort — even the kid who sat in the outfield picking flowers or got tongue-tied at the mic. Participation awards have been around for at least 100 years, but lately they have come under fire.
When toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners compete, they don’t know the expectations adults have for them, says Illinois-based psychologist and parenting coach Emily Pagone. Offering them a trophy or medal as a form of positive reinforcement can highlight the skills that the losers demonstrated and reinforce the sportsmanship that all the players displayed. “As the caregivers around the children acknowledge their abilities and strengths, that’s the compass for how children learn about the expectations of the situation,” Pagone says.
Still, there is one problem with this system: It creates a feedback loop of external approval and motivation, driven by superficial praise. It’s valuable for students to play soccer not only because they’re seeking objects to decorate their rooms, but also because they enjoy the sport. They won’t always get prizes for doing their best, so it’s crucial to build an inner desire to push through in challenging times. For this reason, Pagone recommends cancelling participation awards around young kids. But not all experts agree that’s best. “Positive reinforcement can also benefit older kids and adults, keeping them coming back to their hobby even after a tough practice or season,” says Kelly LaPorte, clinical director of Naperville Counseling Center. That lesson of celebrating the effort and not just the outcome remains important throughout a person’s life.
Trophies and medals for preteens and teens should also be paired with conversations — particularly to prepare them to deal with loss. Sometimes this means letting them take a five-minute walk to calm down after a match. Other times it just requires allowing them to cry or asking them about their feelings. “A ‘perfect world’ would include participation awards for kids,” LaPorte says, and postgame reflections with caregivers and coaches.
12. The underlined expression “come under fire” in paragraph 1 might be replaced by___________.
A. become hits B. become milestones
C. been recognized D. been criticized
13. If the feedback loop is formed, what will happen to kids in the future?
A. They will lose interest in their hobbies. B. They will easily give up in tough times.
C. They will play hard to seek for decorations. D. They will try their best to build an inner desire.
14. What is the benefit of trophies and medals according to Kelly LaPorte?
A. They can motivate you back to your interests. B. They can be kept well throughout your life.
C. They can remind you of celebrating the effort. D. They can reinforce your confidence and skills.
15. What’s the best title for this text?
A. Are Participation Awards Good for Kids?
B. Having a Conversation Calms Kids Down
C. Creating Positive Reinforcement is Important
D. What Should Parents Do for Children’s Competition?
D 13. B 14. A 15. A
根据第一段画线词上文“Participation awards have been around for at least 100 years, but lately they have come under fire.(参与奖已经存在了至少100年,但最近come under fire)”中but表示转折和下文两位专家对于参与奖是否有益的看法,可得出最近参与奖受到了抨击。故“come under fire”意为“遭受批评”,故选D。
根据第三段中“They won’t always get prizes for doing their best, so it’s crucial to build an inner desire to push through in challenging times. For this reason, Pagone recommends cancelling participation awards around young kids.(他们不会总是因为尽力而得到奖励,所以在充满挑战的时刻建立一种内在的渴望是至关重要的。出于这个原因,Pagone建议取消幼儿参与奖)”可推断,参与奖会让孩子觉得尽力了也不一定能得到奖励,形成外在的反馈之后,孩子可能会因为缺乏内驱力而在充满挑战的时候放弃,故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Positive reinforcement can also benefit older kids and adults, keeping them coming back to their hobby even after a tough practice or season(积极的强化也能让年龄较大的孩子和成人受益,即使在艰难的训练或赛季之后,也能让他们重新回到自己的爱好上来)”可知,奖杯和奖牌这些积极的强化可以帮助人们在艰苦的训练或赛季之后重新找回自己的爱好,故选A。
根据第一段“At the end of many sports tournaments and spelling bees, all the competitors are honored for their effort — even the kid who sat in the outfield picking flowers or got tongue-tied at the mic. Participation awards have been around for at least 100 years, but lately they have come under fire.(在许多体育比赛和拼字比赛结束时,所有的竞争者都会因为他们的努力而获得荣誉——即使是坐在外场摘花或在麦克风前张口结舌的孩子。参与奖已经存在了至少100年,但最近它们受到了抨击)”结合文章话题为讨论参与奖对孩子是否有益,A选项“参与奖对孩子有好处吗?”最符合文章标题。故选A。
___16___. A study recently published in Current Biology reflects previous perspective. Can you catch up on lost sleep? Here’s what the science says.
Losing even an hour puts you in sleep debt.
___17___: Withdraw an hour on Monday, then deposit an extra one on Saturday to break even. But as far as truly making up for the lost sleep during the week, you really can’t make up for it hour by hour. Research has suggested that a person would actually need four days of adequate rest to make up for even one hour of sleep debt. ___18___, it’s almost mathematically impossible to close that gap over only two weekend nights.
Your circadian clock (生物钟) is more sensitive than you think.
Pulling an occasional all-nighter or extra-early morning may not seem like a big deal. But tiredness isn’t the only consequence of an uncertain sleep schedule. ___19___. Your circadian clock naturally starts producing sleep-promoting melatonin (褪黑素) around 9 p.m., and levels stay high throughout the night before dropping off in the morning. Light exposure influences circadian rhythms somewhat—which is why you may have trouble sleeping after using screens at night—but if you maintain stable sleep and wake times, your internal clock should be similarly reliable.
___20___.
If you’re exhausted by the time Saturday arrives, you should select a midday nap rather than a marathon overnight sleep. Previous research has also linked naps to better, memory focus and creativity. The National Sleep Foundation says that just 20 minutes of napping is enough to leave you feeling refreshed, as long as you don’t nap too close to bedtime.
A. Napping is better than sleeping in
B. Many people think of sleep like a bank account
C. If you spend that extra time sleeping during the week
D. Since many people get less sleep than they need just about every weeknight
E. Preserving your circadian rhythms by napping may improve your sleeping quality
F. Experts have long said you can’t make up for lost sleep by sleeping more on your days off
G. It also disrupts your circadian clock, a system that regulates hormone levels to promote sleep
F 17. B 18. D 19. G 20. A
下文“A study recently published in Current Biology reflects previous perspective. Can you catch up on lost sleep? Here’s what the science says. (最近发表在《当代生物学》上的一项研究回应了以前的观点。你能弥补失去的睡眠吗?接下来的这些是科学告诉我们的。)”引出问题:我们能否弥补失去的睡眠,回应了专家的观点。F项“Experts have long said you can’t make up for lost sleep by sleeping more on your days off (专家长期以来一直表示,你不能通过在休息日多睡一会儿来弥补失去的睡眠)”介绍了长久以来专家们对补觉的观点,衔接下文。故选F。
下文“Withdraw an hour on Monday, then deposit an extra one on Saturday to break even. (周一提取一个小时,然后在周六额外存入一个小时以达到收支平衡。)”举例说明如何弥补睡眠。B项“Many people think of sleep like a bank account (许多人认为睡眠就像一个银行账户一样)”指出睡眠像银行账户,引出下文对“bank account”解释,故选B。
根据下文“it’s almost mathematically impossible to close that gap over only two weekend nights. (从数学上讲,仅仅在周末的两个晚上,几乎是不可能缩小这一差距的。)”可知,在周末的两个晚上几乎不能弥补工作日缺失的睡眠。D项“Since many people get less sleep than they need just about every weeknight (由于许多人的睡眠时间几乎少于每个工作日晚上的需求)”说明人们在工作日睡眠不足。
下文“Your circadian clock naturally starts producing sleep-promoting melatonin (褪黑素) around 9 p.m., and levels stay high throughout the night before dropping off in the morning. (你的生物钟在晚上9点左右自然开始产生促进睡眠的褪黑素,并且整晚都保持高水平,然后在早上下降。)”介绍人体的生物钟是如何运转的。G项“It also disrupts your circadian clock, a system that regulates hormone levels to promote sleep (它还会扰乱你的生物钟,这是一种调节激素水平以促进睡眠的系统)”引出下文,介绍生物钟这一概念,故选G。
下文“If you’re exhausted by the time Saturday arrives, you should select a midday nap rather than a marathon overnight sleep. Previous research has also linked naps to better, memory focus and creativity. (如果你到周六时已经筋疲力尽,你应该选择午睡,而不是马拉松式的彻夜长眠。以前的研究也将小睡与更好的记忆力和创造力联系起来。)”说明小憩比睡懒觉好,以及小憩的好处。A项“Napping is better than sleeping in (小憩一会比睡懒觉好)”概括下文,说明小憩一会比睡懒觉好。故选A。
