Wildfires were rapidly spreading through northern and southern California as powerful
winds swept through the state, burning homes and forcing more than 200,000 people to leave
their homes. Thousands of structures were destroyed in the massive fires. Firefighters and
volunteers worked around the clock, risking their lives to save others, although thick clouds of
wildfire smoke hung in the air.
But it's not just humans in danger’s path. A video of a horse running away from the rescue
team to find his family of horses from CBS Los Angeles went viral. The public was touched by
the horse's heroic act and shared their thoughts on the Internet.
Volunteers were rescuing several horses from the wildfire when one of the horses jumped
away from the group. They were trying to help the horse, but he refused. They probably had no
idea what was wrong with the horse, who just started running away from them. The horse raced
back into danger to lead his family to safety, despite rescuers' best efforts to stop him. He knew
he couldn't leave them behind. As the tension increased, several human strangers jumped in to
help the animals — they went back to the burning barn where some of the horses remained.
You can watch the horse run back into the smoke-filled area, reconnect with the horses
inside the fence, and quickly accompany them out of the fenced-off area. Though it's not clear
from the video, CBS Los Angeles reported that all but one of the horses involved were saved.
Disastrous as the California wildfires have been, the video and countless other rescue stories —
humans and animals alike — are shining light on all acts of goodness taking place.
24. What does the author intend to show by telling the wildfires in detail in Para. 1?
A. What caused the big wildfires.
B. How serious the wildfires were.
D. How rapidly the wildfires spread.
C. What rescuers did in the wildfires.
25. What does the underlined phrases ''went viral'' mean?
A. Turned bad.
B. Got attacked.
C. Became interesting.
D. Grew popular.
26. Which words can best describe the horse?
A. Loyal but stubborn.
B. Caring and courageous.
D. Flexible but aggressive.
C. Responsible and clever.
27. What message does the author want to convey?
A. Fighting disasters needs joint efforts. B. Animals are always friends of man.
C. All good deeds deserve to be praised. D. Animals show goodness to each other.

The current Ebola (埃博拉病毒) outbreak in western and central Africa has infected at least
3,069 people, including 1,552 dead, making it the largest outbreak in history. Ebola is a deadly
virus-about 60 percent of people infected with it have died.
How is Ebola doing its harm?
When a person becomes infected with Ebola, the virus damages the body’s immune cells,
which defend against infection, said a researcher at Lancaster University. But if a person’s
immune system can stand up to this attack, then he is more likely to survive the disease.
高三英语试题
共 10页
第四页
The patients that survive it best are those who don’t get such a bad disadvantage in immune
system. But if the body isn’t able to get rid of this attack, then the immune system becomes less
able to regulate itself. This means the immune system is more likely to run out of control,
leading to a drop in blood pressure, multi-organ failure and eventually death.
What are the common symptoms of the disease?
Fever. Headache. Joint and muscle aches. Weakness. Diarrhea. Vomiting. Stomach pain.
Lack of appetite. Chills. Rash. Redness in the eyes. Hiccups. Cough. Sore throat. Chest pain.
Difficult breathing or swallowing. Bleeding inside and outside of the body.
How to prevent the spread of Ebola?
Ebola can be spread primarily via direct contact with patients, specifically the blood and
fluids of an infected patient.
We should avoid contact with infected patients and objects such as clothing, bedding, and
needles used by them. Avoid areas where infections have been reported. For now, the disease
has only been confirmed in central and West Africa, four cases in America and Europe. Avoid
eating wild-caught bush meat. Researchers have suspected that the disease came to humans via
animals, probably through the meat of primates (灵长类) . If you’re in an area where the
disease has been reported, avoid purchasing, eating, or handling wild game to stay on the safe
side.
Wear protective medical clothing if you’re around infected patients. Extreme caution is
necessary. Hospital workers must use masks, gloves, goggles, and gowns, which needed to be
worn at all times if you’re around infected patients.
How Do People Survive Ebola?
Doctors don’t know for certain who will survive Ebola, and there is no specific treatment or
cure for the disease. Although in the minority, some people do recover from infection.
Our suggestions include:
Maintain your electrolytes (电解质 ) and body liquid. Sports drinks can be used. Monitor
your blood pressure and control it if necessary. Dropping blood pressure may be a serious sign
of infection. Breathe in an oxygen-rich environment. Quickly address any symptoms of
infection. Be honest about when and where you’re feeling pain.
28. Ebola causes the death of a human being by ______.
A. attacking him with high fever
C. damaging his immune cells
B. regulating his immune system
D. harming all his organs directly
29. What is NOT mentioned as the symptom of Ebola?
A. Fever and chills
C. Lack of appetite
B. Swallowing difficulty
D. High blood pressure
30. In order not to be infected by Ebola, we should ______.
A. have the clothing of the infected cleaned
C. not travel to Africa, America or Europe
B. avoid eating wild animals like monkeys
D. stay at home without going anywhere

Wax (蜡) paper can’t be recycled with other paper items because the wax coating interferes
with the recycling process. However, there are still plenty of different options to dispose of
your wax paper in an environmentally friendly way.
Wax paper is parchment paper that’s been coated with a thin layer of wax on each side. This
makes it resistant to wetness and provides a non-stick surface. The majority of wax paper is
coated in a food-safe wax, which is made using vegetable oil. Some brands of wax paper also
use soybean oil.
The coating in wax paper is water-resistant, and paper needs to be torn with water as one of
the first steps in recycling. This makes it unsuitable to be processed alongside most other paper
waste. It’s also often covered with additional oils from foods, which are not accepted by
recycling facilities.
While it can’t be recycled, the good news is that some wax paper can be composted at
home. If you use wax paper made with vegetable or soybean oil, it can be added in small
quantities to your compost. The wax is quite hard for the microbes in compost to break down,
so rip your wax paper into small pieces and add it to your compost a little at a time. Wax paper
should biodegrade at around the same rate as leaf mulch. If you do use wax paper, the best sort
to buy is one with unbleached, natural paper, and a wax coating made using vegetable or
soybean oil.
Reusing an item as many times as possible is always a good, environmentally friendly
option, especially if it can’t be recycled afterward. Rather than throw away your wax paper
after one use, you can sometimes use it multiple times to extend its useful life.
32. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 2?
A. What exactly wax paper is.
B. How functional wax paper is.
D. How we can dispose wax paper.
C. Why wax paper can’t be recycled.
33. What does the underlined word “rip” probably mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. Make. B. Press. C. Shake. D. Tear.
34. What may be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. Alternatives to wax paper.
B. Ideas for reusing wax paper.
D. Ways to choose wax paper.
C. Items wrapped with wax paper.
35. What is probably the best title for the text?
A. Deal with Wax Paper in Environmentally Friendly Ways
B. The Importance of Wax Paper’s Being Recycled
C. Is Wax Paper Environmentally Friendly?
D. What Can Be Used Instead of Wax Paper?
