After knowing that she couldn’t bear a child, Helen was devastated. One day while she was driving home from the café, a dirty puppy in the road caught Helen’s attention. After consideration, Helen and her husband eventually decided to take him home. And they later named him Ollie.
Two years later, Ollie had grown into a large ball of fur. Ollie was Helen’s world, and she hated it whenever someone addressed him as her rescue dog. Helen never went out without Ollie. One day, they were hanging out together outside a supermarket, unprepared for what was coming their way.
“Hey boy, wait in the car. I’ll be back, alright?” Helen said as she patted Ollie on his head. She locked him in the car and headed to the supermarket because Ollie hated crowded places and never accompanied Helen to the stores.
Moments later, there was a sudden outburst of chaos. Helen was busy shopping and had no idea it was raining heavily outside. The whole area began to flood unexpectedly. People rushed to every open store they could find for shelter.
12-year-old boy Matt was looking for a place to run to safety when he spotted people running to the supermarket nearby. He had no time to think and ran after them.
Matt hurried upstairs with the rest. Suddenly, Helen noticed the situation and was alarmed. “What happened?” she asked a man and screamed at the top of her lungs when she learned of the flood. All she could think of was Ollie trapped in the car.
“OLLIE..., I left my dog in the car,” she cried, running toward the window. “My dog is trapped in the car. Somebody, please...”
Matt looked outside and saw the car Helen pointed to was in the flash flood. Helen was frightened to go out because she didn’t know how to swim. Matt understood Helen’s anxiety and ran to her pet’s rescue.
He grabbed an iron rod from the corner and raced downstairs. “Hey kid, where are you going? You will drown,” someone shouted. But Matt turned a deaf ear to him because he was determined to save Ollie. In the meanwhile, some people placed a call to the rescue center.

As this term began, I found a new student in my class named Ian Bonus, 16 years old. He was silent, always doing business alone. From his file, I learned that Ian was born in Korea, and spent all his childhood there until his family moved to England. It wasn’t as smooth and easy as he imagined. He had to learn and speak a new language so as to communicate with others. When at school, he tended to avoid crowds. He usually tried every possible means to keep his mouth shut up, even in class. Besides, after class, he didn’t join any clubs or activities even though everyone around him invited him to have a try.
At the beginning, I thought Ian was just a little shy at his age especially in a new place. However, later he still didn’t say a single word when classmates got along well. Having ever dealt with such similar situation myself, I felt I had the suitable experience and the right responsibility to encourage him to melt into our class. Finally, a chance came. One day, in my class, it was Ian’s turn to make a short speech as other students did regularly. But he just stood up, saying nothing. Then I could feel his face red with embarrassment. Next class, we had a P.E. lesson on the court. Again, he didn’t join, just sitting on the bench watching others play. Learning that he was fond of sports and was actually a very athletic and energetic person, I felt a strong desire to persuade him to play together. With this thought in mind, I walked over and sat aside Ian.

It was pouring heavily. Mabel was all wet by the time she arrived at the sheltered (遮蔽) walkway. From far away she watched the public bus leave the bus stop without her. She shook her head and said to herself, “I should have brought my umbrella.”
Mabel stood at the shelter and watched people get on the buses. The only way she could reach school would be to have someone shelter her to the bus stop and wait for the next bus. The school was just one bus stop away.
However, she was not confident of anyone helping her at all. Everyone looked too busy to notice her. Mabel asked a few people for help. But nobody stopped to lend or share an umbrella. Mabel began to feel disappointed. She was shocked that no one had agreed to help her. She had no choice but to stay where she was. She decided to wait for the rain to stop.

When two-year old Frankie-Rae Hockney took her first shaky steps across the livingroom, her mother cried. Although watching a child walk for the first time is an exciting moment for any parent, for Mary-Ella Tuppenney-Hockney it was a milestone she neverthought her daughter would meet.
Frankie-Rae was born with a rare chromosomal anomaly (染色体异常) called 17p 13.1 microdeletion syndrome, of which there are only 21 known cases. Doctors explained that they only had five different case studies who had the condition and so there were lots of uncertainties about her future. As a result, when she was born, Mary-Ella, 36, and dad Ben Hockney, 37,were warned that she might never walk or talk. They both broke down in tears, not knowing what life would hold for their daughter.
Mary-Ella is a dance teacher and she runs her own dance school in Oxfordshire and so dancing is a huge part of their lives. So she thought it was heart-breaking to think that Frankie-Rae wouldnever be able to be part of that. However, Frankie-Rae quickly beganseeing experts in occupational health. Despite all her problems, she grew into such a happy, smiley little girl who loved listening to music and waving (挥舞) along to it.
“Because she couldn’t walk as she got bigger, we needed a special pushchair and the one available on the NHS wasn’t suitable for her needs,” Mary-Ella explains. Fortunately, the Carter Trust stepped in to give Frankie-Rae one that worked. It meant her parents could take her shopping with them on weekends and out to the park. It made such a huge difference to her and the family. But Mary -Ella felt guilty for taking the money from the charity.
That’s when Frankie -Rae’s elder sister Georgie-Ellyn, eight, came up with the idea of fundraising (募捐) for the charity that helped them. As a result, the family got together, organizing some activities such as selling second-hand clothes and books. They also held aparty inviting those who cared for the charity.

Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, who taught him to read and to write. Mr. Rose told his son that, when his morning lessons were over, he might amuse himself for one hour as he pleased.
There was a river near by. On its bank stood the hut of a poor fisherman, who lived by selling fish. His careful wife kept her wheel going early and late. They both worked very hard to keep themselves above want. But they were greatly troubled for fear that their only son should never learn to read and to write. They could not teach him themselves, and they were too poor to send him to school.
Charles called at the hut of this fisherman one day, to inquire about his dog, which was missing. He found the little boy, whose name was Joe, siting by the table, on which he was making marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures.
“No. I am trying to write,” said little Joe, “but I know only two words. Those I saw upon a sign, and I am trying to write them.”
“If I could only learn to read and write,” said he, “I should be the happiest boy in the world.”
“Then I will make you happy said Charles.” I am only a little boy, but I can teach you that.”
“My father gives me an hour every day for myself. Now, if you will try to learn, you shall soon know how to read and to write.”
Both Joe and his mother were ready to fall on their knees to thank Charles. They told him it was what they wished above all things.
So, on the next day when the hour came, Charles put his book in his pocket, and went to teach Joe. Joe learned very fast, and Charles son began to teach him how to write.
Some time after, a gentleman called on Mr. Rose, and said, “Charles did not always amuse himself. I often see him go to the house of the fisherman. I fear he goes out in their boat.”

    6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Pembral was a good boy. But he was always forgetting things. Big things, small things, important things, little things. His mother was a patient woman, which was a good thing. Pembral regularly tested her patience. She learned early on to remind him of everything: big things, small things, important things, even the little things. Once in a while the little things that didn’t seem important at the time became more important later.
Sometimes she thought that Pembral forgot things on purpose — things like washing behind his ears; or picking up his toys; or feeding the dog. It bothered (麻烦) her to remind him of these sorts of things. However, for the most part, she knew that his mind just wandered off and it was her job to bring it back.
Fall weather had arrived. The air was cool and fresh, especially in the morning, even if the skies were brilliant blue and the sun was shining brightly. The light of the morning made wisps (缕) of fog come up from the ponds. The trees were changing their summer greens to coats of brilliant yellow, orange and red.
This was a time when Pembral’s mother cooked things that smelled and tasted really good. It seemed like he was just hungrier in the fall or something, and he liked how the windows steamed up and how the kitchen smells filled up the whole house when his mother was cooking up something good at that time of the year.
Pembral’s mother was baking (烤) something special that day: a carrot cake. It was one of Pembral’s favorites. But she needed some things from the store, and sent Pembral to get them. “I need eggs, sugar and raisins (葡萄干),” she said. “Here’s some money,” she went on. “Put it in your pocket where you won’t lose it.”
Pembral pushed the money into his pocket, and headed toward the door. He went outside and down the street, kicking dry leaves on the sidewalk into the air and breathing in their smell, and watching flying birds.

Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. l knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me.   “No Santa Claus!” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.”
    “Now,put on your coat,and let’s go.”
“Go where, Grandma?” l asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store. the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors,Grandma handed me ten dollars.“Take this money.”she said,“and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
l was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-two class.
Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. l knew that because he never went out for recess(休息) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I fingered the ten dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone?”the lady behind the counter asked kindly,as I laid my ten dollars down.“Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me,put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.

Houses are very different. Some are huge and have gold swimming pools. Pop stars live in those. Some are in rows with a brick wall at one end and overlook a pie factory. Franklin Gates lives in one of those. Number Three, Stanley Street, to be exact.
He loved living on Stanley Street. Everyone was friendly. All his mates were there and the smells from the pie factory, Mmm, delicious! There was just one problem. Franklin’s mum and dad wanted to move. His mum was expecting twins and they needed another bedroom. “This house is too small, ” said his mum. Next day, there was a “For Sale” sign stuck by Franklin’s door.
Franklin and his best friend Josh stared at the words of doom. “What am I going to do, Josh?” said Franklin.
Josh frowned. “Has your house got problems? Number forty’s got problems and no one wants to buy it.” Franklin stared at number forty. It looked all right to him. “What kind of problems?” he asked.
“Oh, mice and damp and really horrible wallpaper.” Franklin sighed. His house was warm and friendly and it had just been painted, worse luck.
Mrs. Cox lived next door to Franklin in a big house that had once been the corner shop. Just then, she came out, followed by her dog Zack.
“I’m sorry you’re moving,” Mrs. Cox said. “So am I,” Franklin grumbled. Mrs. Cox patted Franklin on the arm. “Never mind. Your house might take months to sell.”
However, a few days later, Franklin came home from school to find a man in the kitchen. His name was Mr. Bragg and was interested in buying the house. He glared at Franklin and trod on his toes, without saying sorry. Franklin’s heart sank when Mr. Bragg said he wanted to come back for a second visit on Saturday morning.
At school, Franklin asked, “Josh. Does your elder sister still work in the fish shop?” Josh nodded. “Good. Listen, I’ve got a job for you.”
Franklin cupped his hand over Josh’s ear and began whispering his plan.

    9.阅读下而短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I needed to do something in my community in order to complete the community service hours required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless. How should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she’d be right there, which I found quite comforting.
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had totally given up on life, while others seemed to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn’t have a place to call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

    10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
    Surviving Mount Rainier
Bad luck and poor timing left Kart and three climbers stuck on Mount Rainier for several long days. They faced mountain climbing’s toughest tests. One man suffered altitude sickness; ice and rockfall rained down at night; cold nights in a tent that got torn left them hypothermic(体温过低的). Calm confidence, skill and the courage to continue up the route, despite illness and injury, likely saved their lives.
The climbers set out on a Friday, camping low on the route the first night because they were concerned about rockfall after a climber had recently died in an accident at the route’s typical high camp. On Saturday, at about 10,500 feet, one of the climbers became sick from the altitude, which began to slow them down. They needed to keep moving, so they put him in the lead so he could move at a pace he was comfortable with.
By Sunday evening, the ill climber was exhausted, and they had to make an unplanned camp on steep snow. They were in a bad place—on a platform about the size of a table under an ice cliff. The wind got stronger during the night, ripping the tent and snapping the poles. They tried to secure it by placing their packs and rocks around the edges. Finally, they just stuck their feet between the rocks and held the tent with their bodies. It was a cold night.

    参考答案
    1.参考范文:
He braved the currents and swam to the car. Through the window, he saw a frightened dog staring at him with big eyes. Matt broke the window with the rod and grabbed Ollie. “Come here, boy...” he said. To his surprise, Ollie wagged his tail and obeyed. The dog was eventually pulled out, safe and sound. Matt then put the dog on the car’s roof and climbed up and sat with Ollie, patting him gently so that he would stay calm and not get scared looking at the flood below.
Minutes later, a rescue team arrived. Thankfully, it had stopped raining by then, making their task easier. The rescue team helped Matt and Ollie to safety. Helen tearfully hugged and kissed her dog. Helen turned around to Matt and started crying even more. “I don’t know how to thank you. You saved my baby’s life today.” Matt smiled at her and said, “I had a dog two years ago. I just understand your affection for him,” Helen thanked Matt again and offered to send him home.

Before my speech, I’d like to express my sincere thanks to you all, especially our teacher.” Then he finished a brilliant speech fluently. After that, he was active in every discussion in class and joined an after-school sports club with new friends. Since then, whether on the court or during speeches, confident smiles were always on his face.

Howwever, it was Frankie-Rae’s shaky steps that inspired people most. It was difficult for the two-year-old to practice walking but she made it. Mary set up a page for her, introducing her and those who have the specially rare disease. On the page, she included a Crowdfunder link and posted details of the challenge on social media. And every day the family cheered her on as she took a few shaky steps. So far Frankie-Rae has raised over £1,000 for the Carter Trust. And the family is anxious to break their target of £2 ,000.
Frankie-Rae is such a smiley happy little girl that she brings hope to all that meet her. She relies on special equipment on her legs to support them and it is hard for her, but she never gives up practising. Although she can only say “Mum” and “Dad”, she understands everything the others say. The moment the gentleman left, Mr. Rose went in search of his son. He went to the river, and walked up and down, in hope of seeing the boat. Not seeing it, he grew uneasy. He thought Charles must have gone a long way off. Unwilling to leave without learning something of him, he went to the hut. He put his head in at the window, which was open. There a pleasant sight met his eyes. Charles was at the table, ruling a copybook Joe was reading to him, while his mother was spinning in the corner. Charles was a little confused. He feared his father might not be pleased; but he had no need to be uneasy, for his father was delighted.
The next day, his father took him to town, and gave him books for himself and Joe, with writing paper, pens, and ink. Charles was the happiest boy in the world when he came home. He ran to Joe, his hands filled with parcels, and his heart beating with joy.

He’d forgotten all about the eggs, just thinking of the raisins and the carrot cake. Along the way back home, Pembral saw some leaves that were really big and brilliant in color, so he picked them up to give to his mother. When Pembral got home, he put the things on the table.
He was reaching into his pocket for the change when his mother said, “Where are the eggs?” Pembral stopped. Eggs! He forgot the eggs! He looked at the bag, and then said sadly, “I’m sorry, Momma. I forgot.” His mother was unhappy and hurried out the door. Pembral stood still and thought about how to make his mother happy. Moments later, his mother returned. One possible version:
Franklin cupped his hand over Josh’s ear and began whispering his plan. When Josh heard what Franklin wanted, his mouth opened wide enough to swallow a dentist. He cried, “I’ll get into trouble!” “It’s my only chance,” Franklin begged. On Saturday morning, Mr. and Mrs. Gates were still outside when Mr. Bragg rang the doorbell. Entering the house, Mr. Bragg stopped and sniffed the air, asking curiously “What’s that disgusting smell?” Franklin told him the factory does fish pie on Saturdays, which made Mr. Bragg frowned. He pulled a face and ran out of the door.
Mr. and Mrs. Gates were very angry. “You’d better explain what’s going on!” Franklin knew he was in big trouble. He cleared up all smelly fishes in their house which had been brought by Josh. At last, he said sorry to his mum and dad. Mrs. Cox arrived and came up with a good idea that she would like to swap her house with Franklin’s. “So we had one big house,” grinned Franklin.
Bragg。于是 Franklin决定想办法破坏Mr. Bragg的购房计划。

9.As they came in my direction, I put on my brightest and happiest smile. In front of me was a continuous stream of homeless people in need of something to eat. So the next few hours I found myself busy in scooping the nearly-prepared dinner into their bowls and respectfully put them onto their hands. And it stirred me when those hungry people shuffled off, they also left with words of many blessings and much gratitude. Though my limbs were stiff and weary, yet my heart was warm. Seeing what I did make their day, I felt a deep pleasure welling up inside.
I was so happy that I had earned my service hours in this way. Never had I ever experienced a more appealing situation where I was immersed in such a fabulous mood. It was truly a good and rewarding thing to do! Following the lady’s advice, I even tried to befriend them. And it turned out that the seemingly dangerous people were actually quite friendly. My previous fear and concern suddenly vanished. Through the experience, apart from the service hours, I also earned something more valuable: while we can’t give those needy soul a sweet home, at least we can contribute our share to warm their heart by a dose of compassion, a dose of kindness, and a bright happy smile.

    10.One possible version:
On Monday, they managed to call 911 but forgot to ask how to communicate with the rangers (护林员) before losing signal. They set up what was left of the tent as best they could and stayed where they were, praying for the early arrival of their salvation. But for several days, they watched beyond all hope as high winds prevented the rangers’ attempts at a helicopter rescue. Their food was running out and they shared a single bottle of snow melt each day. Then an icefall buried their tent platform and squeezed them together. It was impossible to climb down.
On Wednesday, they gathered everything and decided to carry on with their climb. They climbed up slowly and carefully, resting when they were weak. It didn’t take long until the wind froze them in place. That was the scariest moment. Their spirits began to sink and they started to doubt if they could continue. Kart thought of all the people who loved him, and it really hit him they must be worried. As he tried to climb again and again, he just kept yelling out to his friends, “We have to get there.”However, as they got onto the final slope to the summit, the weather cleared. Suddenly, a helicopter appeared out of nowhere. They were rescued.
