Mr. Watson’s store was widely known throughout the neighborhood. It sold many different things. Every day after school, Jess came to the store and he loved to look at the pipes (烟斗). One pipe especially caught his eye. He imagined that some day he would be a grown man and could smoke a pipe, just like this one. He did not remember his father, but he knew his dad smoked a pipe.
Jess reached out and touched the pipe. He kept thinking that when he was old enough, he would go to work and his mother could stay home. He would not have to wait three hours after school until she came home from her job. Oh, why? He wondered, did it take so long to grow up and take his father’s place.
He looked around the store and put the bowl of the pipe in his hand. He just wanted to get the feel of it — nothing more. He was lost in his dream, wishing he could be like his father.
Suddenly he was shocked out of his dream. He heard footsteps behind him. He turned around quickly. It was Mr. Watson, the friendly store owner. Jess was unable to move.
“Hello, Jess,” Mr. Watson said, and kept on walking. Jess struggled to answer but could not get his voice up. He swallowed and smiled weakly as Mr. Watson walked away. Jess’s thoughts became unclear. Was he suspicious?
Suddenly the store seemed extremely warm. Jess watched his feet begin to move and take him out of the store. He felt the cool air outside and it was good, yet, he felt an emptiness inside himself. Like one walking in his sleep, he moved toward the ground. He looked around and saw the empty swings. He slipped into one and leaned against its chain. The cold metal links hurt his side.
Sitting on the swing, he gave the ground a push with one foot. A sharp pain caught him in the stomach. He knew it was the pipe he felt. He had walked out of the store with it.

2.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In the busy city of New York, such an amazing thing ever happened. On a cold Friday night, a poor artist stood at the gate of the subway station, playing his violin. The young violinist was a student at an Arts College named Joseph, who did so every day in order to earn his tuition fees. He planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna and had booked the flight the next morning. Though the music was great, people were quickly going home for the weekend. Joseph was playing his last chapter when a middle-aged man looking pretty excited slowed down his pace and put 50 dollars into the hat, for which Joseph was grateful.
The next night, the young artist came to the gate of the subway station as usual, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it on the ground and put some stones on it. Then he began playing the violin.
Before long, the young violinist was surrounded with many passers-by, who were all attracted by the words on that paper. It said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an unexpected thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim it as soon as possible.”
It caused a great excitement and curiosity. They were dying to know what the unexpected thing could be. After about half an hour, a middle-aged man ran there in a hurry and rushed through the crowd to the violinist and grabbed his shoulders and said, “Yes, it’s you. You did come here. I knew that you’re an honest man and would certainly come here.”
The young violinist asked calmly, “Are you Mr George Sang?” The man nodded. The violinist asked, “Did you lose something?” “Lottery. It’s lottery.” replied the man.
The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang’s name was seen. “Is it?” he asked. George nodded and seized the lottery ticket and kissed it. Asked by many passers-by, he told his story in details.

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When the last customer left, it was already 10:30 pm. Eric, an 18-year-old college student in Atlanta, dragged himself home. In order to save money to buy himself the new mountain bike, he had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation. He already had 120 dollars. With one more week, he would have his dream bike.
Entering his room, Eric found his younger brother Bill sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face.
“Sorry, Eric. I ... I did something wrong,” Bill sprang up and said nervously.
“What is it?”
“This afternoon I went to play football on the road outside our house and accidentally hit our neighbor Mr. White’s car. I was so scared and I ... I hurried home in panic without telling him.”
“Is the car seriously damaged?”
“The ball hit the front hard and the left headlight of it got broken.”
“It’s truly your fault. It’s really dangerous to play football on the road. What’s worse, you shouldn’t come back without telling Mr. Smith about it,” Eric raised his voice, obviously annoyed. Hearing this, Bill lowered his head and bit his lips hard.
“Anyway, it’s no use crying over spilt milk. And it is too late today. We have to deal with it tomorrow. Now you just go to bed.”
When Bill went bed, Eric couldn’t go to sleep himself. Father always told him to be honest, to be a man respected by people and to be an example of his brother. He was sorry for his brother’s behavior. He shouldn’t have run away after he did something wrong. But he could understand him. Anyway, he was only a boy of seven and what had happened really scared him. But as his elder brother, he should do something about it although this may delay his plan of having the mountain bike. “Nothing serious, just another week in KFC,” he said to himself.

4.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之成为一个完整的故事。
“You should get a dog.” my therapist (治疗专家) said. A dog? I couldn’t even look after myself. I took a deep breath and carefully considered the idea of welcoming a canine (犬科的) friend into my life. This seemed like too easy a solution to the fact that I couldn't leave the house without bursting into tears.
Adopting an animal during the height of the pandemic was far from easy. When I found Simba, his adoption profile made him out as the perfect puppy. I filed out the paperwork and had a few weeks to prepare for his arrival.
When he came home, it became increasingly obvious that Simba didn’t understand “no”, “stop it’ or “don’t do that”. He was the worst-behaved dog I’d ever seen. I was beginning to doubt my therapist’s advice.
At home, I found him sitting on my bed comfortably. Jumping from the sofa to the tea table was his favorite game every day. He fought tooth and nail to get a bite of my meals and ate anything that fell on the floor. What was worse, dog waste and urine were seen everywhere, which annoyed me most. But his curiosity and vigor really impressed me. Training him to behave well kept me busier than I’d ever expected.
I decided to start taking him for walks. I could barely leave the house before, but my heart couldn’t say no to Simba. Simba showed me what bravery looked like. He didn’t stop to consider every possible outcome of a situation. He simply went for it. If there was a dog at a park,he would run toward it. He always leapt forward and explored the unknown by sniffing here and there unless I called him. He loved adventure. I found myself mirroring his behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.

In high school, I was a straight-A student, a member of many school clubs, and a receiver of many rewards. However, I had been subjected to (受到……折磨) peer pressure. Wanting to be “cool!”, I started going to parties and drinking, drunk beyond recognition. My life took a tum for the worse. However, the experience in one summer program taught me a lesson: never do something you believe is wrong just to gain the approval of others.
In June, I worked part-time at a restaurant. The day before I left for the program, one co-worker offered me his driver’s license, telling me to have fun in Quebec since we two almost looked the same. I’d seen friends walk into liquor (酒) stores with fake licenses and come out carrying a twelve-pack of beer, smiling proudly. So I took the license, but I promised myself that I wouldn’t use it. However, I easily got carried away.
On the first night of the program, while walking around, my new friends and I came across a liquor store. Kai asked if anyone had a fake license. After everyone shook his head, I cleared my throat and declared, “I do.” With everyone’s admiration and Kai’s twenty dollars and instruction, I boldly agreed to take on the task without thinking. I managed to buy a case of beer. The boys cheered and gave me pats on the back. “You’re the man,” someone said to me. The praise boosted my self-confidence.
The last night there was a party. A few of my friends insisted that we drink before the dance. They asked me, the “ID man,” to buy alcohol. To earn their admiration, I took the cash and bought what they wanted. Later that night, I was enjoying myself when Kai said nervously, “Cristian isn’t okay.” Worried for my friend, I went to assess the situation. Clearly, Cristian was overly drunk and almost unconscious (不省人事的).

6.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Amy Hagadom, a third-grade girl in Fort Wayne, Indiana, impressed people all across the country by bravely speaking up to make a simple yet remarkable wish.
As Amy Hagadorn rounded the comer across the hall from her classroom, she knocked into a tall boy from the fifth grade running in the opposite direction.
“Watch it, squirt (矮子).” The boy yelled as he passed by the little third-grader. Then, with a bad smile on his face, the boy took hold of his right leg and copied the way Amy limped (跛行) when she walked.
Amy closed her eyes. Ignore him, she told herself as she headed for her classroom. But at the end of the day, Amy was still thinking about the tall boy's mean teasing. It wasn't as if he were the only one. It seemed that ever since Amy started the third grade, someone teased her every single day. Kids teased her about her speech or her limping. Amy was tired of it. Sometimes, even in a classroom full of other students, the teasing made her feel very lonely.
Back home at the dinner table that evening, Amy was quiet. Her mother knew that things were not going well at school. That’s why Patti Hagadorn was happy to have some exciting news to share with her daughter.
“There’s a Christmas wish contest on the radio station,”Amy’s mom announced.“Write a letter to Santa, and you might win a prize.”
Amy giggled. The contest sounded like fun. She started thinking about what she wanted most for Christmas.
A smile took hold of Amy when the idea first came to her. Out came pencil and paper, and Amy went to work on her letter.
Dear Santa Claus.
My name is Amy. I am nine years old. I have a problem at school. Can you help me Santa? Kids laugh at me because of the way I walk and run and talk. I have a serious disease. I just want one day where no one laughs at me or makes fun of me. Love, Amy.

7.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When my girlfriend, Jessika McNeill, and I arrived at Utah’s Zion National Park, we’d traveled to hike the nine-mile-long Subway Trail, so named because of its amazing tunnel-shaped canyon (峡谷). Halfway through our journey, which included climbing over big rocks and shallow streams, the sun-shine gave way to a light snow, so I zipped my jacket. Soon after, we reached the brown-colored walls of the Subway Trail. A small pond stood in our way, with the trail continuing on the other side. Because the pond looked shallow, we began to walk through, with Jessika leading the way.
About five feet from the edge, her front foot sank into the sandy bottom. Then she fell forward and both legs started to sink. I grabbed her under the shoulders tightly, and pulled her out of the mud. She scrambled (爬) back. But now I was sinking. The mud came all the way up to my legs. I freed my left leg but couldn’t move my right. Jessika handed me a long stick we’d picked up earlier in the hike. I jammed it down the side of my leg and tried to pull it out. Nothing. I was stuck in quicksand. Jessika started scooping (挖) sand with both hands, but it was refilling faster than she could pull it out. “ Don’t bother, ” I told her. “ You’re just wasting your energy. ” While I was no longer sinking, I wasn’t getting out, either.
We couldn’t call for help because the only cell phone was back at the tent. I told Jessika she had to hike back and call for rescue. She was scared — she had only ever hiked with me and was afraid of hiking alone on a trail like that. But we had no other choices.

Sophie was dressed and all ready for her very first dance recital(舞蹈表演). When she started dance class last year, she didn’t know about the recital. She heard people talk about the recital but she didn’t know what it was. The recital was a chance for all of the parents and grandparents to see the dance students dance. It was at the high school every year and Sophie was going to dance on the stage in front of everyone. She did not like the thought of that. It scared her.
Yesterday she practiced her dance for the first time on the stage. There were only a few moms watching so it wasn’t too bad. But the thought of dancing in front of lots of people tonight was really scary.
“All ready to go?” Mom asked.
“Yes. I guess,” Sophie said.
“You don’t sound like you are ready. What’s wrong?”
“I don’t know. I don’t feel so good. I’m kind of afraid.”
Mom sat on the edge of Sophie’s bed. “Remember yesterday when you practiced and I was right in the front row? You did just fine!”
“But today there will be so many people!”
“When you go out on the stage, you just look right where I was sitting yesterday. I will be in that same seat. You just look at me and it will be just like yesterday! Let’s go!”
“What about the rest of the family?”
“They are coming in the other car. We have to be there a little early.”
Sophie thought about what her mom said all the way to the high school. Mom was always right, but Sophie wasn’t sure about this time. She still hated the thought of dancing in front of all those people.
When it was time for her to dance Sophie thought about what Mom told her. She sure hoped Mom was right. Her belly felt like butterflies were flying inside it. The music began to play.

9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
It was just the three of us-my parents and me. I always felt it a pity that I would never have a chance to know what grandparents’ “spoiling” love would be like.
My dad is a truck driver, and when I was little, he was gone most of the time, delivering wire and other supplies around the Midwest. My mom is a devoted teacher, always busy switching between looking after her only child and her many students.
We lived in a small house in Brighton, Colorado, in a neighborhood of 1970s old houses. We moved there on my third birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Arlene handing me strawberries from her garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. She and her husband, Bill, lived next door.
Arlene spent a lot of time working in the garden, and I was always talking to her from our yard. I think what drew me to Arlene and Bill is that they never got tired of listening to me. I also think Arlene saw a lot of herself in me-we were both lonely, anxious-and that may be why she always took the time to listen to me. Bill too. It was a wonderful connection.
One day, my parents asked Bill and Arlene whether they’d watch me while they went out. This worked well for everyone, so it became a somewhat frequent occurrence. Arlene and Bill didn’t have kids. They had a spare room in their house, which became “my” room. I had boxes of toys and books in that room. Arlene and I would do crafts together. Bill taught me how to ride a bike and later how to fly a kite. It was his company that made father’s constant absence not so unbearable.
When I was about five, I had an idea. My parents were watching TV when I spat it out, “what if I adopted Bill and Arlene as my grandparents?”

10.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My husband and I are fond of travelling. Ten years ago, we went on a 10-day trip across the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert.
On our second-to-last day in Morocco, we happily took a trip to Essaouira, an old and beautiful seaside town on the Atlantic coast. During the journey there, we stopped at a local shop, where we got to taste some argan oil. After that, we headed for where we stayed. We arrived at our small guest house in Essaouira at around dinner time, and on our way to a local restaurant my husband started to feel unwell. He went back to our guest house while I had dinner with some friends.
When I got back to our guest house after dinner, I found my husband sitting on the bathroom floor, looking very pale. He had been sick about six times in an hour. He spent the rest of the night in the bathroom, getting very familiar with the house’s pipe. Our main suspect object was the argan oil—it probably didn’t agree with him.
At about 4 am, my husband finally managed to leave the bathroom and crawl into bed. He was very sick and dehydrated, so I went down to the reception to buy a bottle of water. When I got to the lobby, I found a young man behind the desk, who didn’t look older than 18, and explained to him that my husband was sick and I needed to buy some bottled water for him.
Our house was very small and basic and didn’t have a restaurant or cafe. The young man informed me that they didn’t sell any drinks at the house. Worrying about my husband, I asked him where the nearest shop was. I looked out of the window and my heart started to race. I didn’t fancy risking going into the unfamiliar streets of the Medina in the dark, all by myself. In fact, I was afraid of it.

参考答案
1. The sun was slipping down through the trees and it was time to go home. His mother would look at him and she would know. She always knew. A hot tear ran down his cheek. She trusted him. He remembered the nice way she said, “You’re a little man now, Jess.” It made him sad when his mother’s words came back to him. Remembering this, he felt as if someone had stuck a sharp stick into his side. Her trust in him was all he could think about now. It drove everything else from his mind. The pipe and its magic power meant nothing. His dream of growing up meant nothing .
Looking at the long shadows of the trees coming towards him, Jess now knew what he had to do. He jumped out of the swing and started running. When he took the pipe, he left the store with slow unsure steps. Now his feet were quick decisive, taking him straight back to the store like an arrow. He ran along the sidewalk and reached the store soon. Mr. Watson was just inside the door. Suddenly and blindly, he held out the pipe. Mr. Watson gently took the pipe from the boy’s outstretched hand and patted him on the shoulder.Jess felt the warmth of Mr Watson’s big hand, and felt his shoulders had become a little broader and stronger.

4.Ten minutes later, Simba and I were walking in the nearby park. It had already been bathed in the rising sun. Enjoying the fresh air and birds singing, I felt refreshed and so did Simba. He led me into a dancing group and then began to run about loosely, sometimes playing with a dog, sometimes coming back to my side. It was amazing that I gradually shook my body to the cheerful melody. On our way home, a pet owner stopped to share experience of keeping pets. Unconsciously, morning walks became a routine
As time went by, I found myself totally changed. Inspired by the bravery of Simba, I could leave my house without tears. Every time I felt down or defeated, my puppy would keep me company quietly and I would pour out all my inner thoughts to him. Whenever I got home, he greeted me by licking my hands and jumping up and down. Everything seemed to take a turn for the better. Not until then did I truly understand my therapist's advice. Thanks to Simba, my friend and instructor, it was he that restored my life.

5.One possible version:
Suddenly, something went wrong: Cristian fell to the ground. Seeing his pale face, I stiffened, totally not knowing what to do. Luckily, someone called 911 and Cristian was pulled into the ambulance, and I saw his unconscious face drooping over the white sheet. I had never seen a situation like this before and I was guilty, not only for buying the beer but also for the risks I put him at. Later I was told Cristian’s condition was serious, but fortunately he didn’t suffer any permanent damage. The whole night found me tossing and turning, worrying about the mess I had caused.
The next day, I was called to the program director’s office. He asked if I bought the alcohol. I knew that there was no point in denying the truth. So I admitted everything that happened. Like a caught criminal, I was overcome with shame. My punishment was much less than what I deserved: I was merely expelled from the program. Back home, I shredded the fake driver’s license and threw it away. Through this experience, I learned an important lesson: never do something you believe is wrong just because someone else is telling you to and don’t sacrifice anyone’s well-being to gain the approval of others.

All across the country, newspapers and radio and television stations reported the story of the little girl who asked for such a simple yet remarkable Christmas gift—just one day without teasing.

Thirty minutes after she left, it started to snow heavily. I tightened my jacket and pulled my head inside. At some point I nodded off to sleep. I didn’t know how long I was out, but I woke up with my upper body slip backward into the quicksand. I quickly planted my stick into the dry ground, stopping my fall, exhausted and nearly in despair. Long time passed and it was getting dark. I started to think about what I could do to die faster. But I didn’t want to drown if I fell backward again. That would be the worst way to go.
Paragraph 2:
A few hours later, I saw a light through my jacket. A flashlight!“Help! Help!” I yelled. A man shouted back as he ran to me, followed by my girlfriend breathlessly. The rescuer was just in time! He threw a long rope towards me with all his might and I instantly caught one end of it. “Wrap it to your kneecap tightly!” He shouted. “Got it!” I did as what he said. The rescuer together with Jessika started pulling me up inch by inch desperately. When they safely dragged me to the side of the canyon, the three of us sighed in relief. “Thank goodness! Thank you, brother!” I said gratefully, hugging them in my weak muddy arms.

9.One possible version:
My parents said I could ask them tomorrow. The next day, heart pounding in my chest, I knocked on Bill and Arlene’s door, sat down in their living room and stammered out my question tentatively, “Will you guys care to be my grandparents?” At these words, they were petrified with surprise and the room fell into an awkward silence. “Maybe they are not so fond of me as I thought.” I murmured to myself, doubts crowding in on me. I was about to sneak out when my friends reached out their arms and embraced me tightly. “Of course!” they responded enthusiastically, tears of joy brimming in their eyes.
From the day I adopted them, I called Bill and Arlene Grandpa and Grandma. They even went to great lengths to print out an adoption certificate, and it hung on their living room wall proudly. Over the years, my dear grandparents supported me in all my gloomy days, encouraged me to pursue dreams regardless of numerous obstacles, and imparted their invaluable wisdom to me selflessly. I could find no words to express how grateful and fortunate I felt for their presence in my life. However, it was when they told me in their last days that how much joy and comfort I had brought into their otherwise tedious life that I truly became the luckiest grandson in the world.
