Known as a “living fossil”, the Chinese sturgeon (中华鲟) is a very precious species. It is believed to have lived alongside the dinosaurs more than 140 million years ago. Although dinosaurs are long since gone, the Chinese sturgeon still exists. However, the species has been listed as “Critically Endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.
On May 14, Shanghai legislators (立法机构) passed a new law protecting the Chinese sturgeon, emphasizing “regional cooperation”, according to China Daily. “This is the first local legislation in the country to protect one endangered fish,” said Ding Wei, director of the legislative affairs committee of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress.
Taken effect on June 6, the regulation urges cooperation in law enforcement (实施), scientific research and rescue of the species between Shanghai and other provinces and regions in the Yangtze River basin, according to People’s Daily.
The need for collaborative efforts is due to the living habitat of the Chinese sturgeon. As an anadromous (溯河产卵的) species, it mainly lives in the Yangtze River and depends on the Vangtze estuary (河口) for migration.
The protection of the Chinese sturgeon is urgent. China began the artificial breeding and release of the fish in 1984. However, very few of the fanned fish have survived in the wild, the number of which is less than 1,000, according to a report by the Shanghai Observer.
Whether this species can be preserved depends on the natural population. “If the natural population is not well protected, the Chinese sturgeon is in danger of extinction.” Li Furong, vice chairperson of the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee of Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress, said in the report.
Since Jan 1 of this year, a 10-year fishing ban on key areas of the Yangtze River basin has been issued, covering 332 nature reserves, which includes Shanghai’s Chinese sturgeon nature reserve.

With fingers and wrists wrapped in medicated tape, Zhang Guimei, founder and principal of the first free high school for girls in China, was presented with the July 1 Medal on Tuesday.
Zhang met her husband in Dali and worked as a teacher in a local school. Unfortunately, her husband died of cancer not long after their marriage. Sadly, Zhang decided to leave this place with which she was too familiar. Hence, she volunteered to teach at a middle school in Huaping, a poverty-stricken county located in the mountains.
Over time, Zhang witnessed the gender gap in education up close in relatively poor rural areas. Urban and rural students already faced unequal access to quality education, and the traditional belief of male superiority only worsened rural girls’ situation. She discovered that many female students would just disappear after studying for a while and some girls were even pulled out of class just before the college entrance exam. The reasons varied: to pay for the younger brother’s tuition, the girl’s parents would have her quit and return home to earn money; the family received engagement gifts.
In 2002, Zhang came up with an idea which, to many, seemed crazy: to found a free high school for girls. Six years later, with help from the Party and the local government and personal donations, she founded the Huaping All-Girls High School. With the goal of never letting a girl fall behind in schooling, Zhang often works overtime despite suffering from several kinds of illnesses. She has walked to almost every household deep in the mountains, talking to the parents about the importance of education for girls.
The efforts paid off. Over the past 13 years, her school has sent 1,800 girls to university. “To educate a girl is to change the destiny of three generations. A cultured, responsible mother won’t let her daughter drop out of school,“ Zhang said.

A.Her love for teaching. B.Her desire for exploration.
C.Her loss of husband. D.Her eagerness for adventure.
6.What inspired Zhang to found a high school for girls?
A.Difficult examinations. B.Gender inequality.
C.Local misunderstanding. D.Teacher resignation.
7.Which of the following words can best describe Zhang Guimei?

8.What’s the main idea of the text?
A.A free high school for girls was successfully set up.
B.A woman with illnesses faces ups and downs in life.
C.The gender gap in education in rural China is bridged.
D.A woman’s devotion to girls’ education finally paid off.
Three Chinese astronauts recently arrived at the new space station in another step forward for the growing space power. Here is a look at some of the space station’s major goals.
The three-member crew will stay for three months in the station’s main living space, called Tianhe. The astronauts will carry out scientific experiments and perform maintenance. They also plan to complete space walks and prepare the station to receive two other modules next year.
While China admits it arrived late to the space station game, it says its new station is modern and includes the latest space technology. Tianhe might even outlast the International Space Station (ISS), which is nearing the end of its operational lifespan.
The recent launch brought back China’s crewed space program after a five-year break. China has now sent 14 astronauts into space since its first launch in 2003. It is the third country after the former Soviet Union and the United States to do so.
As its economy experienced growth in the 1990s, China made a plan for space exploration. Since then, it has attempted to carry out this plan carefully and evenly. China was barred from joining the ISS. It is likely, however, that China would have built its own station anyway because of its goal to be ranked the world top level.
The space program is part of an overall drive to help China take on even larger projects. China also wants to expand cooperation with Russia and other, mostly European countries along with the UN.
China’s space program has been a large part of its national pride. It represents the country’s rise from a poor nation to become the world’s second-largest economy in the last 40 years.
9.What is the purpose for this trip?
A.To carry out some restoration.
B.To do some scientific experiments.
C.To get used to space walks.
D.To receive two other modules.
10.What can we say about the new space station?
A.Modern and advanced.

Outdoor teaching gives students a great sense of wonder and awe as they learn.
On a misty September afternoon,a boy with a bright red backpack spotted something slimy on the ground.“Hello, all the mushrooms,” he said, tapping the fungus(真菌).
A teacher asked why they might be growing in that spot. The boy thought for a moment:“Because it’s shady and wet!”
That was just one lesson for a group of kids from the Chicago Botanic Garden Nature Preschool,a program that’s part of the growing field of nature-based early childhood education.
Nature preschools in the US have more than doubled in the last three years, according to the Natural Start Alliance,a project of the North American Association for Environmental Education.Ann Halley, director of the Botanic Garden School, said that curiosity comes with the outdoors.
“Taking the children down to the cove(小海湾)area and just sitting and looking at thegeese as they're landing, just that sense of wonder and awe-those are things that can only be supplied when you’re outside,”Halley said,“ These are the things that inspire lifelong learners.”
Additionally, nature develops resilience(适应力), sets kids up for greateracademic success and provides a ready-made classroom with lessons in science, math and even empathy. Studies also show benefits ranging from sunlight’s positive effect on eyesight to stress reduction from green spaces.
In fact, teachers and parents are searching for ways to make outdoor programs more accessible.Andrea Bockewitz, whose children attended a nature preschool, said she hopes that the solutions won’t be temporary. “I’m hoping that this is going to stick, that we are going to get kids outside more,”Bockewitz said.

A spacecraft carrying Nie Haisheng,Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo touched down safely in the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia today (Sept.17) at 1:34 a.m. EDT (1:34 p.m. Beijing time) today, bringing the historic Shenzhou 12 mission to an end.
Shenzhou 12 launched on June 16 and arrived seven hours later at Tianhe ( “Harmony of the Heavens” ), the core module of China’s Earth-orbiting space station. The Shenzhou 12 crew, commanded by Nie, spent 90 days aboard Tianhe, staying aloft about three times longer than any previous Chinese crewed spaceflight.
Shenzhou 12’s retum to Earth was a multiday affair. The spacecraft detached from Tianhe Wednesday (Sept.15) at 8:56 p.m. EDT, according to a statement released by the China Manned Space Engineering Office (CMSEO). Shenzhou 12 then performed a rendezvous test with Tianhe, which was complete by 1:38 a. m.EDT Thursday (Sept.16), CMSEO officials said in another update.
During their time in orbit, the Shenzhou 12 astronauts snapped some amazing photos of Earth and carried out a variety of scientific experiments. They also performed two spacewalks designed to help get the 54-foot-long (16.6 meters) Tianhe fully up and running and ready for future visits, which will be frequent over the coming months.
For example, China is expected to send the robotic Tianzhou 3 cargo spacecraft toward Tianhe around Sept.20. And the next crewed mission to the module, the six-month-long Shenzhou 13, is apparently scheduled to launch in mid-October. (Exact target dates are hard to come by with Chinese missions, because the nation tends not to announce many details of its spaceflight plans in advance.)

The vaccine (疫苗) news continues to seem very encouraging. Britain started its mass vaccination effort and the U. S. isn’t far behind. But there is still one dark cloud hanging over the vaccines that many people don’t yet understand. The vaccines will be much less effective at preventing death and illness if they are introduced into a population where the coronavirus is still severe-as is now the case in the U.S.
A vaccine is like a fire hose (消防龙头). A vaccine that is 95 percent effective, as Moderna’s and Pfizer’s versions appear to be, is a powerful fire hose. But the size of a fire is still a bigger determinant of how much destruction occurs.
At the current level of infection in the U. S.(about 160,000 confirmed new infections per day), a vaccine that is 95 percent effective — distributed at the expected pace — would still leave a terrible toll (伤亡人数) after it was introduced. Almost 36 million or so Americans have caught the virus, and more than 600,000 have died. This is far worse than the toll in a different situation where the vaccine was only 50 percent effective. However, it’s worth pausing for a moment on this comparison. If the U.S. maintained its current infection rate and Moderna and Pfizer announced that their vaccines were only 50 percent effective, a lot of people would panic.
But the reality we have is actually worse. How could this be? No vaccine can get rid of a pandemic immediately, just as no fire hose can put out a forest fire. While the vaccine is being distributed, the virus continues to do damage.
There is one positive way to look at this: Measures that reduce the virus’s spread — like mask-wearing, social distancing and rapid-result testing — can still have great consequences. They will save many lives in coming months.
24.According to the passage, what is the public’s attitude to the effects of the vaccine?
A.Critical.
B.Optimistic.
C.Worred.
D.Neutral.
25.How does the author mainly present his argument?
A.By giving definitions.
B.By classifying facts.
C.By drawing comparisons.
D.By appealing to emotions.
26.We can infer from Paragraph 3 that ________.
A.fewer people will die if the infection rate is lower
B.the US have controlled the spread of the coronavirus
C.the death toll in the next months will be reduced a lot
D.the vaccines are less effective than expected
27.Which does the author think is a better way to save lives?
A.Improving the effectiveness of the vaccines.
B.Producing a greater variety of vaccines.
C.Looking at the situation in a positive way.
D.Wearing masks and practicing social distancing.

43-year-old John Chadwick started live-streaming (直播) life of the birds with their chicks. But just weeks after uploading the videos to YouTube, he gained millions of views from around the world.
John said, “To think that tens of millions of people have been watching the birds from around the world is just incredible and quite overwhelming.”
The sound engineer bought the bird box by accident. He placed it on a willow tree in his back garden in March, and within hours two blue tits (蓝冠山雀) moved in and they had five chicks. At first, he only wanted to show his family what the birds were up to.
John said, “Within a day the birds moved in, and I wanted to know what was going on inside. I started to livestream and do video highlights every day-on the first day 100 people watched it. It showed things like the chicks being fed in the nests as the parents carried in caterpillars (毛毛虫). After three months, I had 2, 000 subscribers.”
John decided to put a final video together and keep it as short as possible-showing the birds going into the nests, the eggs hatching, and the chicks fledging(长羽毛).
Now despite the huge global success of the videos, John is unlikely to make enough for a nest egg of his own. He still needs to struggle for his family. But some people say they find it quite relaxing and genuinely fascinated by John’s videos.
He said, “My personal challenge to myself was to get out of my comfortable zone. And I enjoy exploring new areas. But I keep in mind that I need to care for my family.”

Papua New Guinea is an island nation north of Australia with a population of more than 9, 100. 000 people. It is recognized for its cultural diversity, as most of its population lives in traditional indigenous (土著的)communities.A result of this is that there are more than 850 active languages in the country today.
The earliest family of languages in the country, the Papua family appeared roughly 40, 000 years ago. The key to this language diversity is the isolationist (孤立主义的) tendencies of the tribes (部落) within Papua New Guinea. Tribes never made contact with one another, so each different language faced little risk of mixing with other languages or being replaced.
This changed with the arrival of Europeans in the 19th century. They introduced the people of apua New Guinea to English and other European languages. The combination of English and native languages has resulted in a form of language called Tok Pisin, which is the most common language in the country. Speaking Tok Pisin and English can help a young Papua New Guinean find more opportunities outside of their villages.
However, the disadvantage is that with more people speaking Tok Pisin or English, many of the indigenous languages are in danger. A study of indigenous languages in Papua New Guinea found that only 58% of students could speak an indigenous language. Meanwhile, 91% of their parents were fluent in their native tongues. If this pace continues, many of these languages are at risk. Some of Papua New Guinea’s languages are already in vulnerable places with fewer than 100 known speakers.
Each language represents a piece of culture that could not be replaced if every speaker dies out. To help keep these languages alive, linguists (语言学家) have worked with indigenous Papua New Guineans to create dictionaries and grammatical guides. Technology is used to record the language, meaning that even if the last known speaker of a language dies, evidence of the tongue still exists. While this can help keep a language from dying, teaching indigenous languages in local schools can truly keep the languages alive.
35.What has led to the language diversity in Papua New Guinea?
A.Many foreigners’ arrival in history.
B.Local governments’ encouragement.
C.The large population in this small country.
D.The lack of communication between tribes.
36.What do we know about Tok Pisin?
A.It is usually spoken out of the country.
B.It was invented completely by Europeans.
C.It contributes to spreading native languages.
D.It is popular among the younger generation.
37.What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Especially important.
B.Able to be easily hurt.
C.Different in some way.
D.In a position of authority.
38.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The importance of ancient languages.
B.Ways to teach students native languages.
C.Efforts to preserve endangered languages.
D.The bright future of indigenous languages.

25.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“At the current level of infection in the U. S. (about 160, 000 confirmed new infections per day), a vaccine that is 95 percent effective — distributed at the expected pace — would still leave a terrible toll (伤亡人数) after it was introduced. Almost 36 million or so Americans have caught the virus, and more than 600,000 have died. This is far worse than the toll in a different situation where the vaccine was only 50 percent effective.(根据美国目前的感染水平(每天约有16万例确诊新感染病例),一种95%有效的疫苗——以预期的速度分发——在推出后仍会造成可怕的死亡。

根据第一段的“It is recognized for its cultural diversity, as most of its population lives in traditional indigenous (土著的)communities.A result of this is that there are more than 850 active languages in the country today.(它的文化多样性得到承认,因为它的大多数人口生活在传统的土著社区。其结果是,今天在这个国家有850多种活跃的语言)”和第二段的“Tribes never made contact with one another, so each different language faced little risk of mixing with other languages or being replaced.(部落之间从未有过接触,所以每种不同的语言几乎没有与其他语言混合或被取代的风险)”可知,Papua New Guinea的大多数人都生活在传统的土著社区,部落之间沟通联系很少。由此推知,部落之间缺乏沟通联系导致Papua New Guinea语言的多样性。故选D。
36.推理判断题。根据第三段的“The combination of English and native languages has resulted in a form of language called Tok Pisin, which is the most common language in the country. Speaking Tok Pisin and English can help a young Papua New Guinean find more opportunities outside of their villages.(英语和当地语言的结合形成了一种叫做Tok Pisin的语言,这是该国最通用的语言。说Tok Pisin和英语可以帮助巴布亚新几内亚的年轻人在他们的村庄之外找到更多的机会)”推知,Tok Pisin在年轻人中很受欢迎,因为这可以帮助他们在存在外找到更多的机会。故选D。
37.词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段的“A study of indigenous languages in Papua New Guinea found that only 58% of students could speak an indigenous language. Meanwhile, 91% of their parents were fluent in their native tongues. If this pace continues, many of these languages are at risk. Some of Papua New Guinea’s languages are already in vulnerable places with fewer than 100 known speakers.(一项关于巴布亚新几内亚土著语言的研究发现,只有58%的学生会说一种土著语言。
根据最后一段的“To help keep these languages alive, linguists (语言学家) have worked with indigenous Papua New Guineans to create dictionaries and grammatical guides. Technology is used to record the language, meaning that even if the last known speaker of a language dies, evidence of the tongue still exists. While this can help keep a language from dying, teaching indigenous languages in local schools can truly keep the languages alive.(为了帮助保持这些语言的生命力,语言学家们与巴布亚新几内亚土著人民合作,编写字典和语法指南。科技被用来记录这种语言,这意味着即使最后一个说这种语言的人去世了,这种语言的证据仍然存在。虽然这有助于防止一种语言消亡,但在当地学校教授土著语言可以真正让这些语言存活下)”可知,本段主要介绍了保存这些濒临消失的语言所付出的努力。故选C。
