It is that time of the year, when a handful of world’s leading scholars, social activists and researchers are rewarded with what is often cited as the most prestigious acknowledgement of human effort-the Nobel Prize. Here’s a look at who has won the prize and for what.
    Physiology or Medicine
Swedish geneticist Svante Peabo won the first Nobel of the year, for starting the field of ancient DNA studies. He is well-known for extracting, sequencing, and analyzing ancient DNA from Neanderthal bones.
    Physics
Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser and Anton Zeilinger’s work in quantum (量子) technology landed them the second Nobel Prize announced in 2022. Although Aspect is from France, Clauser from the U.S, and Zeilinger from Austria, the three separately performed “groundbreaking experiments” as one team. “Their results have cleared the way for new technology,” the committee stated.
    Chemistry
The Nobel Prize for chemistry went to another trio, Carolyn R. Bertozzi from the U.S., Morten Meldal from Denmark and K. Barry Sharpless from the U.S. “for the development of click chemistry and biorthogonal chemistry,” the committee stated. Dr. Bertozzi is the eighth woman chemist to be awarded the prize, while Dr. Sharpless is the fifth scientist to be awarded two Nobel Prizes.
    Economics
The Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to three American economists, Ben S. Bernanke, Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig “for research on banks and financial crises,” the Nobel Prize committee announced on Monday. By studying the history of American economics, particularly the Great Depression of the 1930s,they improved how we understand the role of banks during times of hardship and the bank’s impact on societal functions.

Steph Clemence always intended to go to college. She had good grades and considered herself college bound. But life has a tendency to throw obstacles in the way. When her father died tragically in a car accident, leaving her mother to support three daughters on a modest income, paying for college became out of the question.
Around that time, Steph tried to figure out what to do with a life that had differed so much from the plan she’d carefully laid out. The answer came one afternoon when she was cleaning her bedroom closet and found a list from the English teacher she’d had in her junior year, Dorothy Clark. One afternoon, Mrs. Clark walked into the classroom carrying a stack of papers. She instructed each students to take one. The handout was titled Mrs. Clark’s Book List. “It wasn’t homework,” the teacher announced, “but it could be a road map. Some of you might not go on to higher education, but you can continue to learn.” It would, she believed, form the equivalent of two years at a liberal arts college.
“She knew the income levels of the kids in my high school,” says Steph. “Working-class and logging families. She knew most of us would not go to college. She was right. But she knew we could continue to learn after high school. She was also right about that.” Steph studied the list. Each of those books sparked her passion to learn more about the person, subject matter, or time in history. That made her look for other books that weren’t on the list, hoping to deepen her knowledge. Over the years, the reading list was a constant in her life, traveling with her even on vacations.
Now Steph is 70 and she never did get to college. But she has only four books left to read from the list. She expects to complete them sometime in 2023. “Each of the books has added something to who I am and how I see the world.” she says, “I now have gained an insight to see why things happened and what it might mean.”
    4. What prevented Steph going to college?
    A. Her bad grades.
    B. The lack of financial support.
    C. Her low income.
    D. Her tragic accident.
    5. Why did Mr. Clark create the book list?
    A. To prepare students for college.
    B. To serve as a reading task for students.
    C. To share her favorite books with students.
    D. To encourage students to continue learning.
6 How does Steph feel about the book list now?
    A. Regretful.
    B. Moved.
    C. Fulfilled.
    D. Determined.
    7. What is the text mainly about?
    A. A good reading habit.
    B. An influential reading list.
    C. An impressive English teacher.
    D. A memorable experience in high school.
    C
On June 23,2018,twelve young Thai boys and their assistant football coach wandered into a karst cave in northern Thailand, near the border with Myanmar. What happened next would grab the world’s attention and lead to a complex and daring international rescue operation. The 10.3-kilometer-long Tham Luang cave flooded, trapping the boys in total blackness nearly 2.5 kilometers from the cave entrance.
Thousands of people from around the globe participated in the rescue effort, including military personnel, medical experts and the rock stars of the operation — cave divers. The divers, who safely removed all of the Thai children and their coach after 18 days underground, dealt with tight spaces and low visibility in muddy water- conditions that would prove deadly: Saman Gunan, a former Thai Navy Seal, died while transporting air tanks into the cave.
While the sport of cave diving had received attention in the pop culture area prior to the rescue mission in North Thailand, there is little doubt that the brave divers at Tham Luang cave helped push the activity and its varieties of risks into global society’s minds.
The sport-often referred to as among the world’s most dangerous recreational activities-has its roots in pre-WWII England. Since then, the recreational practice of cave diving, described by Australian cave explorer Richard Harris (a participant in the Tham Luang cave rescue) as an “unusual hobby” for “the ordinary,” has spread around the world-China included.
Over 1,000 kilometers northeast of Tham Luang cave, in South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, lies karst-peak-covered Du’an county-China’s little-known cave diving Mecca.
Home to thousands of kilometers of underground rivers, Du’an county offers divers spellbinding geological formations, perhaps the world’s largest collection of blind fish species and a rare variety of freshwater jellyfish.
    8. What do we know about the Tham Luang cave rescue operation?
    A. There was no loss of life in the process. B. Rock stars took part in the rescue efforts.
    C. Rescue team came from more than Thailand. D. Few people cared about it outside Thailand.
    9. What contributes to people knowing more about cave diving globally?
    A. Its dangerous recreations. B. Its long history.
    C. An expert’s description. D. The divers’ heroic deeds.
    10. Why is Du’an county referred to as a cave diving Mecca?
    A. It is northeast of Tham Luang cave. B. There are lots of underground rivers.
    C. It is hardly known to the outside world. D. It has the world’s largest geological formations.
    11. What will be talked about in the following passage?
    A. Spectacular cave diving experiences in Du’an.
    B. Diving instructions shared by Richard Harris.
    C. Lessons learned from this rescue operation.
    D. Foods offered to tourists in Du’an.
    D
“Regrets, I’ve had a few. But then again, too few to mention,” Frank Sinatra chanted in his 1969 hit “My Way”. The song’s idea is attractive: that anyone can just declare what’s done is done and move on. Some take the declaration a step further and claim they have no regrets at all. Whether a boast or an actual attitude, “no regrets” suggests that life can and should be lived without looking through the rear-view mirror.
Easier said than done, though. In 2020, author Daniel H. Pink launched the World Regret Survey, the largest ever survey on the topic. With his research team, Pink asked more than 15,000 people in 105 countries, “How often do you look back on your life and wish you had done things differently?” 82% said regret is at least an occasional part of their life; roughly 21% said they feel regret “al1 the time.” Only 1% said they never feel regret.
If you are of the “no regrets” type, you might think that all this regret is a recipe for unhappiness. But that isn’t the case. True, being overwhelmed by regret is indeed bad for you. But going to the other extreme may be even worse. To rid yourself of regrets doesn’t free you from shame or sorrow; it leads you to make the same mistakes again and again. To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regret in its proper place.
As uncomfortable as it is, regret is an amazing cognitive (认知) achievement. If today your relationship with your partner has soured, your regret might mentally take you back to last year. You would remember your being mean and sensitive, and then imagine yourself showing more patience, being kind instead of hurtful at key moments. Then you would fast-forward to today and see how your relationship could be progressing instead of languishing.
But regret doesn’t have to be left unmanaged. The trick is to acknowledge it and use it for learning and improvement. You can be honest with yourself about what went wrong and use that knowledge to enjoy better relationships in the future.
    12. What should we do if we have had a bitter quarrel with a close friend according to Frank Sinatra?
    A. Attract more people to your argument.
    B. Send him/her a letter of apology.
    C. Boast about being more reasonable.
    D. Forget about it and just let it go.
    13. Which of the following statements about regret may the writer agree with?
    A. We can do nothing about regret.
    B. Unhappiness results from regret.
    C. Ignoring regrets is missing the opportunity to improve.
    D. Ridding yourself of regrets helps free you from sorrow.
    14. What does the underlined word “languishing” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
    A. Improving.
    B. Healing.
    C. Showing up.
    D. Breaking up.
    15. What might be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Regret to become smarter-if you let it.
    B. Long for a different past? Regret it!
    C. Regret? Not my way!
    D. Stay away! Regret will heal itself.

Early in my teaching career, I heard countless excuses — most of them made up, many of them amusing — for why students didn’t have their homework. And, yes, “the dog ate it” was one of them. As time passed, I grew tired of hearing “I don’t have my homework because...”. So I quit accepting any excuse.
When I was transferred to an inner-city middle school, I took my no-nonsense attitude with me. “No excuses, no extensions!” I warned my eighth graders on the first day of school. I collected homework at the beginning of each class. When a student didn’t have it, I never asked why. Instead, I sighed loudly, shook my head in dramatic disgust and with the student looking on — recorded a zero in the grade book. I soon gained the reputation I thought I wanted.
Then, one afternoon, shortly after the dismissal bell rang, Anthony approached me. “Could I talk to you a minute?” he asked shyly, not taking his eyes off the floor. “I know you don’t accept any explanation, but I don't want you to think I’m a slacker because I come to school without mine so often.”
Anthony looked up at me for the first time, and I could see that his lower lip was quivering. “It’s just that...well, my dad moved out, and my mom waits tables at night, so I have to take care of my little brothers. Sometimes they cry a lot, and it makes it hard to concentrate.”
I put my hand on Anthony’s thin shoulder. “Why are you just now telling me..?” I stopped in mid-sentence. I knew why. So I changed the question. “Would it help if you stay here after school and work on it before you go home?”
    He swallowed hard and nodded.
    Paragraph 1:
The next day, I made an announcement to all my students.

    1. What prize is related to the research with bones?
    A. Physiology. B. Chemistry. C. Physics. D. Economics.
    2. For what study did Ben S. Bernanke, Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig win the prize?

“She knew the income levels of the kids in my high school” says Steph.
    6. How does Steph feel about the book list now?
    A. Regretful.
    B. Moved.
    C. Fulfilled.
    D. Determined.
    7. What is the text mainly about?
    A. A good reading habit.
    B. An influential reading list.
    C. An impressive English teacher.
    D. A memorable experience in high school.
    【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. B

9 What contributes to people knowing more about cave diving globally?
    【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. A

    【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. A
根据第一段二三句“The song’s idea is attractive: that anyone can just declare what’s done is done and move on. Some take the declaration a step further and claim they have no regrets at all.(这首歌的想法很吸引人:任何人都可以宣布所做的事情已经完成,然后继续前进。有些人更进一步,声称自己完全不后悔。)”可知,如果我们采纳Frank Sinatra的观点,在与朋友争吵后,我们不会道歉,我们只会任凭争吵已发生,然后朝前看。故选D项。
    【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段后两句“To rid yourself of regrets doesn’t free you from shame or sorrow; it leads you to make the same mistakes again and again. To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regret in its proper place.(摆脱后悔并不能让你摆脱羞耻或悲伤;它会让你一次又一次犯同样的错误。要真正摆脱内疚,我们必须把后悔放在适当的位置。)”可知,作者并不赞同一个人永远都不后悔这一观点,相反他觉得,如果人永远都不后悔,它就会以此犯同样的错误,得不到任何提升和进步。故选C项。
    【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段最后一句“Then you would fast-forward to today and see how your relationship could be progressing instead of(然后你会快进到今天,看看你们的关系会如何进展而不是)”可知,instead of前后为转折关系,前文说关系需要有进展,而有进展的反面则是结束关系,或者关系破裂,故推测languishing 意为“关系结束”。故选D项。
    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段一二句“But regret doesn’t have to be left unmanaged. The trick is to acknowledge it and use it for learning and improvement.(但后悔不必被忽视。诀窍是承认它,然后将其用于学习和改进中。)”可知,作者建议读者利用好“后悔”这一举动来促进自我的进步,故选项A“Regret to become smarter-if you let it.(如果你愿意-后悔能让你变得更聪明)”符合文章主旨大意。故选A项。

    【17题详解】
根据上文“In fact, shopping to reduce stress can actually help you live a healthier life by making sure that your blood pressure is lowered. Shopping to relieve stress is also called retail therapy as a form of regulating stress.(事实上,通过购物减压可以确保你的血压降低,从而帮助你过上更健康的生活。购物减压也被称为“购物疗法”,是一种调节压力的方式)”以及后文“For many, what starts out as a relatively harmless mood booster could possibly grow into a forced reaction ‘hat empties wallets and causes conflict, thus adding a significant amount of stress to a person’s life.(对很多人来说,一开始作为相对无害的情绪助推器可能会发展成一种被迫的反应,掏空钱包,引发冲突,从而给一个人的生活增加大量压力)”可知,后文主要说明了“购物疗法”的缺点,故本句与上文构成转折,故C选项“然而,购物疗法的副作用不能被忽视”符合语境,故选C。
    【18题详解】
根据本段内容“Whether you’re purchasing Christmas presents or buying groceries, having the items you need written down will provide you with clarity and order while you’re shopping. Reward yourself for sticking to your list and you’ll be more likely to commit to it: buy a cup of coffee while shopping or plan a. fun activity for when you return home.(无论你是在买圣诞礼物还是买杂货,把你需要的东西写下来会让你在购物时条理清晰。奖励自己坚持完成清单,你就更有可能去完成:购物时买杯咖啡,或者计划一个回家后的有趣活动)”可知,本段的主旨是通过准备购物清单来让购物时更有条理,故A选项“购物前准备一份购物清单”符合语境,故选A。

Vacations?(你在购物中心花了太多钱吗?外出就餐吗?假期吗?)”以及后文“For example, if you spend too much money on dining out on the weekends, stock your cupboard with groceries on Friday so you’ll be more likely to stay in and cook.(举个例子,如果你周末花了很多钱在外面吃饭,那就在周五的时候把你的橱柜里装满杂货,这样你就更有可能呆在家里做饭)”可知,本段主要说明了要具体知道钱花在哪些地方,才能避免诱惑,故G选项“追踪你的钱都花到哪里去了,然后尽量避免诱惑”符合语境,故选G。
    【20题详解】
根据上文“Everyone’s financial situation is different and it’s dependent upon a variety of factors, least of all being one’s self worth.(每个人的财务状况都是不同的,这取决于各种各样的因素,最不重要的是一个人的自我价值)”以及后文“Appreciate what you currently have by practicing gratitude.(通过练习感恩来感激你目前所拥有的)”可知,上文提到每个人的财务情况不同,后文则说要感激目前所拥有的,说明不能盲目攀比,故F选项“攀比不仅耗费钱财,还会降低满足感”符合语境,故选F。

    【答案】
    Good morning! Everyone!

Today I’d like to say something about the problems in English writing and some ways to solve them.
There are two mistakes that we students always made in our writing. The first one is spelling mistake, for example, “whether” and “weather”, which means students have some problems in vocabulary learning. What they need to do is to enhance their memory. And the second mistake is grammar mistake. Some students even can’t write a complete sentence and always miss some necessary elements of a sentence. For these students, it is significant to learn more about syntax. That’s what I’d like to share with you today.
    Thanks for your attention.

【高分句型3】That’s what I’d like to share with you today.(运用了what引导的表语从句)
    第二节(满分25分)
    47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
Having read their stories, I learned more about these kids.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】Paragraph 1:
The next day, I made an announcement to all my students. I told them that I’d be offering an after-school study hall. Anthony was the first to show up. Several days later, Terrell joined him, followed by twins Sandy and Randy. Before long, I had a room full of eighth graders to work on their lessons. I never asked why any of them were there, but I soon had a large collection of “I don’t have my homework because...” stories. All were very real. None were amusing.
    Paragraph 2:
Having read their stories, I learned more about these kids. The things I learned that year weren’t taught in the education classes. I discovered not all kids come from homes that are safe and warm. Not all kids have a quiet bedroom with a desk and study light. Some don’t have a home where a parent is even around. And some kids do go to bed hungrily. Most importantly, I learned that “I’ll listen” works better than “No excuses”.

    ①提供:offer/supply
    ②出现:show up/make an appearance
    ③发现:discover/find out
