It has always been thought that when it comes to tornadoe(s
龙卷风), the most peaceful place is
the centre: the eye of the storm. But a photo taken this week in the small Canadian town of Three Hills, Alberta, suggests that there is perhaps no place more peaceful than inside the calm mind of Theunis Wessels.
It all started when Mr Wessels wife, Cecilia, was warned by their nine-year-old daughter that he was cutting grass in their yard when a violent tornado appeared in the distance. When her husband refused to come inside, saying it was moving away from them .Mrs Wessels took a photo to show her parents the storm. The photo, which has been shared widely on social media, is a masterclass in calmness.
In it, the sockless Mr Wessels, dressed casually in summer shorts and sunglasses, is seen never being upset by the disastrous column of cloud“I took the picture just to show my mum and dad in South Africa.”Cecilia told the Times Colonist.
When asked later about the tornado’s approach to him,Mr Wessels responded“, I was keeping an
eye on it, ” seeming as cool as his gardening style and attracting more than a little respect. Alberta,Canada, wrote one admiring Twitter user,“ where men face the bad weather and do what needs to be done." A writer for Esquire magazine struck a pensive note:“I can understand Theunis,” Peter Wade admitted“sometimes when the world is raging outside ,the only thing you can do is keep your small area of it.”
24. How is Paragraph one developed?
A. By listing theories. B.By giving examples.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By making comparisons
25. Why did Cecilia take the photo?
A.To post it on social media. B.To record her husband's act
C. To inform her parents of the tornado. D. To prove most peaceful place
26. Which may make Mr. Wessels respected?
A. His way of gardening B.His calmness in the face of a tornado
C. His bravery in fighting the tornado. D.His rich knowledge about tornado.
27. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A man ignored a tornado in Canada.
B. There are some features of tornado in Canada
C. A man survived surprisingly from a tornado
D. A picture caused heated discussions
C
They say procrastination(拖延)is the thief of time actually deadlines are. New research has
found that if you want someone to help you out with something, it is best not to set a deadline at all. But if you do set a deadline, make it short.
Professor Stephen Knowles tested the effect of deadline length on task completion for their research. Participants were invited to complete an online survey concerning a charity donation. They were given either one week, one month, or no deadline to respond. Professor Knowles says although the topic of the survey was about charity, the results are true of any situation where someone asks another person for help.
The study found responses to the survey were lowest for the one-month deadline and highest when no deadline was specified(明确规定). No deadline and the one-week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate. And then forget. Professor Knowles wasn't surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline. However, he did find it interesting that they received the most responses when no deadline was specified.
"We interpret this as evidence that specifying a longer deadline, as opposed to(而不是)a short
deadline or no deadline at all, removes the urgency to act, " he says. "People therefore put off undertaking the task, and since they are inattentive or forget, postponing it results in lower response rates.
He says of the research that it is possible that not specifying a deadline might still have led participants to assume that there is an unspoken deadline. Professor Knowles hopes his research can help reduce the amount of procrastinating people do. "Many people procrastinate. They have the best intentions of helping someone out,but just do not get around to doing it."
28. Why did Professor Knowles do the research?
A. To study the role a deadline plays in procrastination.
B. To find out whether people are interested in charity.
C. To attract public attention to the effects of procrastination.
D. To test the effect of procrastination on task completion.
29. What most likely leads to procrastination?
A. No deadlines. B. Short deadlines.
C. Specific deadlines. D. Long deadlines.
30. Why do people procrastinate when given a long deadline?
A. They oppose the deadline. B. They are unwilling to act.
C. They lack a sense of urgency. D. They are too busy to remember.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Procrastination the Thief of Time
B. Procrastination an Urgent Problem to Solve
C. Deadline a Result of Procrastination
D. Deadline the Key to Reducing Procrastination
D
Scientists say baby sharks are at risk of being born smaller and without the energy they need to survive because of warming oceans from climate change.
Scientists studied epaulette sharks, which live off Australia and New Guinea. They found that warmer conditions sped up the sharks' growing process. That meant the sharks were born earlier and very tired. The findings could be used in the study of other sharks, including those that give birth to live young.
The scientists studied 27 sharks. Some were raised in average summer water temperatures, about 27 degrees Celsius.Others were raised in higher temperatures around 29 degrees Celsius and 31 degrees Celsius. They found that the sharks raised in the warmest temperatures weighed much less than those raised in average temperatures. They also showed reduced energy levels.
Epaulette sharks can grow to a length of about one meter. Their name comes from large spots on their bodies that look like decorations on some military clothing.
One study this year found that worldwide numbers of oceanic sharks and rays dropped more than 70 percent between 1970 and 2018. Overfishing is a main concern, while climate change and pollution also threaten shark.
Carolyn Wheeler is a doctoral student at the University of Massachusetts Boston and with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University in Australia. She was the lead author of the epaulette shark study. She said that while all the sharks survived, those raised in warmer temperatures were not strong enough to survive for long in the wild.
She added that if the sharks are born smaller than usual "they are probably going to have to start looking for food sooner-and they're going to have less time to adjust to their surroundings." The study should serve as a warning to ocean governing agencies that careful management is needed to prevent the loss of more sharks.
32. In what aspect do the warmer conditions affect the baby sharks?
A. Their food. B. Their body size.
C. Their living habits. D. Their moving route.
33. How did the scientists carry out their study?
A. By studying former data.
B. By tracking sharks in the wild.
C. By collecting information about climate change.
D. By comparing sharks in waters of different temperatures.
34. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. The origin of sharks' names.
B. The sharks' appearance.
C. The threats to sharks' survival.
D. The sharks' living environment.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Scientists Raise Sharks to Deal with Problems.
B. Global Warming Has Reduced Shark Populations.
C. Baby Sharks Struggle to Survive in Warming Oceans.
D. Scientists Are Struggling to Save Sharks from Extinction.
