Why play games?Because they are fun, and a lot more besides. Following the rules. . . planning your next move. . . acting as a team member. . . these are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.
Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dreams that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating(合作).
Many children’s games have a practical side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination(协调) needed in hunting.
Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.
Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Califomian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.
Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.
24. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 most probably means that games can .
A. describe life in an exciting way
B. turn real-life experiences into a play
C. make learning life skills more interesting
D. change people’s views of sporting events
25. According to the passage, why is winning Olympic medals so encouraging?
A. It inspires people’s deep love for the country.
B. It proves the exceptional skills of the winners.
C. It helps the country out of natural disasters.
D. It earns the winners fame and fortune.
26. Iribarne’s goal of forming the foundation is to .
A. bring fun to poor kids
B. provide soccer balls for children
C. give poor kids a chance for a better life
D. appeal to soccer players to help poor kids
27. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Games benefit people all their lives.
B. Sports can get all athletes together.
C. People are advised to play games for fun.
D. Sports increase a country’s competitiveness.

C
Clothes were once used until they fell apart. Not today. In high-income countries in particular, clothing and footwear are increasingly frequently bought, thrown away and replaced with new fashions, which are themselves soon thrown away and replaced.
The so-called ‘Fast fashion’ is having a surprising environmental impact. ‘Take water. The fashion industry, one of the world’s largest users of water, consumes anywhere from 20 trillion to 200 trillion litres every year. ‘Then there are microplastics. Plastic fibres are released when we wash polyester (聚酯纤维) and other polymer-based textiles, and make up between 20% and 35% of themicro plastics choking the oceans. Added to this are specific chemicals, such as those used to make fabrics stain resistant and the pesticides required to protect crops such as cotton.
Change is badly needed, but will require the fashion industry to work harder to embrace more of what is known as the circular economy. That will involve at least two things: refocusing on making things that last, and so encouraging reuse; and more rapidly expanding the technologies for sustainable manufacturing processes, especially recycling. There’s a big role for research--both academic and industrial--in achieving these and other ambitions.
Researchers could begin by helping to provide more accurate estimates of water use. There is also work to be done on improving and expanding textiles recycling. Undoubtedly, used textiles go to landfill in part because there are relatively few systems that collect, recycle and reuse materials. Such recycling requires the manual separation of fibres, as well as buttons and zips. Different fibres are not easy to identify by eye, and overall such manual processes are time-consuming. Machinery is being developed that can help. Technologies also exist to recycle used fibres chemically and to create high -quality fibres that can be reused in clothing. But these are nowhere near the scale needed.
Another challenge for researchers is to work out how to get consumers and manufacturers to change their behaviour. Other research questions include finding ways to encourage people to purchase long lasting goods; exploring how to satisfy desires for something new while reducing environmental impact; and understanding why certain measures can be successfully scaled up whereas others fail.
28. Why does the author mention “water”, “microplastics” and “chemicals” in Paragraph 2?
A. To list examples.
B. To prove a point.
C. To provide an idea.
D. To give a definition.
29. Which of the following goes against the concept of “circular economy”?
A. Efforts are made to lengthen the lifespan of textiles.
B. Worn-out clothes are used as dishcloths and oil rags.
C. High-quality fibres are created to be reused in clothing.
D. Fashion industry is encouraged to release new lines more often.
30. What is the right thing for the fashion industry researchers to do?
A. To make sure that all of the used textiles go to landfill.
B. To separate fibres, as well as buttons and zips manually.
C. To improve and expand textile recycling to a larger extent.
D. To encourage consumers to satisfy their desires for fashion.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text ?
A. Say no to the so-called fast fashion
B. Address the challenges for researchers
C. Embrace more of the circular economy
D. Cut fast fashion’s environmental impact
B 29. D 30. C 31. D

根据第二段的“The so-called ‘Fast fashion’ is having a surprising environmental impact.(所谓的“快时尚”正在对环境产生惊人的影响)”和“The fashion industry, one of the world’s largest users of water, consumes anywhere from 20 trillion to 200 trillion litres every year. Then there are microplastics. Plastic fibres are released when we wash polyester (聚酯纤维) and other polymer-based textiles, and make up between 20% and 35% of themicro plastics choking the oceans. Added to this are specific chemicals, such as those used to make fabrics stain resistant and the pesticides required to protect crops such as cotton.(时装业是世界上用水最多的行业之一,每年的用水量在20万亿到200万亿升之间。
根据第三段的“That will involve at least two things: refocusing on making things that last, and so encouraging reuse; and more rapidly expanding the technologies for sustainable manufacturing processes, especially recycling. There’s a big role for research--both academic and industrial--in achieving these and other ambitions.(这将至少涉及两件事:重新专注于让物品耐用,从而鼓励重复使用;更迅速地扩大可持续生产工艺的技术,特别是回收利用。在实现这些和其他雄心方面,学术和工业研究都发挥着重要作用)”可知,与“循环经济”的概念相抵触的是鼓励时尚产业更频繁地发布新产品。故选D。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的“Researchers could begin by helping to provide more accurate estimates of water use. There is also work to be done on improving and expanding textiles recycling.(研究人员可以从帮助提供更准确的用水量估算开始。在改善和扩大纺织品回收方面也有工作要做)”可知,时尚产业研究者应该做的正确的事情是在更大程度上改善和扩大纺织品回收利用。故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段的“The so-called ‘Fast fashion’ is having a surprising environmental impact.(所谓的“快时尚”正在对环境产生惊人的影响)”和第三段的“Change is badly needed, but will require the fashion industry to work harder to embrace more of what is known as the circular economy.(变革是迫切需要的,但这需要时尚行业更加努力,更多地接受所谓的循环经济)”可知,文章讲述了所谓的“快时尚”对环境产生的影响,以及给我们提供的建议,以避免这种影响,因此最好的题目是D选项“Cut fast fashion’s environmental impact(减少快时尚对环境的影响)”。故选D。
D
Mental health is deteriorating(恶化)among young people globally. The incidence of depression and anxiety is increasing, and this not only lowers quality of life, but can have a lasting negative impact as an adolescent reaches adulthood.
Many experts are trying to get at the root causes of this decline, in order to find ways to prevent further deterioration and to provide more effective help when needed. Two “emerging determinants of interest” are (a) over use of screen-based technology, and (b) too little time spent in nature. Most research to date has considered these factors independently, but a group of scientists from University of Adelaide recently decided to look at them jointly, to see if the combination of high screen time (ST) and low “green time” (GT), could affect mental wellbeing.
The result is published on September 4, 2020, in the scientific journal PLOS One. In it, the researchers analyzed data from 186 studies that looked at children's interactions with screen-based technology and nature and their psychological outcomes, including mental health, cognitive(认知的) functioning, and academic achievement.
What they found was that, in general, excessive screen time results in poorer psychological health, whereas green time improves mental wellbeing. Ten years ago in the U.S., the average daily screen time for 8-to-18-year-olds was 7.5 hours. As the study states, “This greatly exceeds recreational ST guidelines of 2 hours or less per day,” and is made even more challenging by the fact that so many schools are using technology to teach classes.
While some screen time can be beneficial, such as promoting connections and enabling tasks to be done more efficiently, there are many ways in which it is harmful. Excessive screen time “replaces important protective behaviors for mental health such as physical activity, getting adequate sleep, in-person social interactions, and academic activities.”
And yet, when children do go outside, they become more physically active. Their day-night rhythm is regulated, thanks to the exposure to sunlight, thus “encouraging healthy sleep-wake cycles and improved sleep, which is key for psychological well-being.”
32. The research of the University of Adelaide is different because________?
A. The researchers tried to find the root causes.
B. The researchers analyzed large amounts of data.
C. The researchers tried to find a solution.
D. They combined ST and GT.
33. What are the findings of their research?
A. Mental health is worsening among young people globally.
B. School technology contributes to the most screen time.
C. ST and GT have opposite impact on mental health.
D. Guidelines of screen time shouldn’t be more than two hours.
34. Why does over screen time affect mental health?
A. It replaces mentally healthy behaviors.
B. There is too much unhealthy information on the screen.
C. Teens can’t break away from screen addiction.
D. Teens can’t sleep well after screen time.
35. What is implied in the passage?
A. Over screen time worsens teens’ health.
B. Teens need more green time, less screen time.
C. Teens should be banned from any screen time.
D. Screen-based technology shouldn’t be allowed in schools.
DCAB
根据文章第二段“Most research to date has considered these factors independently, but a group of scientists from University of Adelaide recently decided to look at them jointly, to see if the combination of high screen time (ST) and low “green time” (GT), could affect mental wellbeing.(迄今为止,大多数研究都是独立考虑这些因素的,但阿德莱德大学的一组科学家最近决定联合研究它们,看看高屏幕时间(ST)和低“绿色时间”(GT)是否会影响心理健康。)”
根据文章第四段“What they found was that, in general, excessive screen time results in poorer psychological health, whereas green time improves mental wellbeing. (他们发现,总的来说,过多的屏幕时间会导致心理健康状况恶化,而绿色时间会改善心理健康。)”可推断,ST和GT对心理健康有相反的影响。故选C。
34. 细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“Excessive screen time “replaces important protective behaviors for mental health such as physical activity, getting adequate sleep, in-person social interactions, and academic activities.” (过多的屏幕时间“取代了对心理健康重要的保护行为,如体育活动、充足的睡眠、面对面的社交活动和学术活动。”)”可知,长时间看屏幕取代了心理健康的行为。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“And yet, when children do go outside, they become more physically active. Their day-night rhythm is regulated, thanks to the exposure to sunlight, thus “encouraging healthy sleep-wake cycles and improved sleep, which is key for psychological well-being.” (然而,当孩子们外出时,他们会变得更加活跃。得益于阳光照射,它们的昼夜节律得到了调节,因此“鼓励了健康的睡眠-觉醒周期,改善了睡眠,这对心理健康至关重要。”)”可推断,青少年需要更多的绿色时间,更少的屏幕时间,这对心理健康很重要。故选B。

Having taken part in the inter-school storytelling championship for two times, I was a shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally , I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the news that I was chosen again , my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently , I became conceited. I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest. A week before the contest , my teacher Ms. Sara asked ," Selena , would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse for the contest?"She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. " Just imagine you are on stage in the presence of the audience," she added.
"I’ m sorry , Ms. Sara ,” I replied. " I have a sore throat. "
This was the usual lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools , I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine. The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest , the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. Seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.

Soon, it was my turn to talk. Facing the crowd , I found myself suffering from stage fright. I spoke in a nervous voice and even stuttered a few times as I forgot parts of the story. My legs trembled and so did my voice. Seeing my terrible performance , the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. I had never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end , I walked off the stage , with all tears in my eyes
Finally , results were announced after the contest. I did not win any prizes , which was not surprising at all. I felt ashamed when I faced my classmates and Ms. Sara. I regretted underestimating my opponents and overestimating myself. My vanity had cost me the championship. I regretted being so arrogant. I had learned my lesson well and finally understood the meaning of the saying : Modesty helps one to make progress , but conceit makes one lag behind。

Text 9
W: It has been said that if you want something done quickly you should find the busiest people to do it. Why do you think this is true?
M: Is it because they can arrange their time to fit a new task?
W: Very good answer. Some people are natural organizers, but most of us, however, have to plan our time carefully in order to finish everything. Most of you have housework to do at home and most of you probably put them off until a time you want to do them. However, if you did them immediately, they would be finished and you wouldn’t have to think about them.
M: But how can we organize our time?
W: Well, let’s see. First, you could make a list of your tasks — including everything you want to do, even the fun things. Then on a paper, write down the time you set aside for sleeping and connect the remaining hours with the tasks you listed first. Please do this for the next class.
Text 10
W: Rock climbing might seem extremely dangerous, but most climbers know what they’re doing. Over the years, climbers have developed knowledge and techniques that allow them to conquer rocks safely. There are different kinds of rock climbing, and it’s mainly based on the equipment used. The two main categories are aid climbing and free climbing. Aid climbing uses equipment, such as screws inserts into rocks, to help climbers pull themselves to the top. In free climbing, most climbers use equipment only to protect themselves from falling; they don’t use any tools to help them up the rock. In free climbing, it’s all about skill and knowledge.
You might think that muscles are the most important factors in this extreme sport. Not so, you can’t muscle your way through climbing no matter how hard you try. More important factors are balance, accuracy, and the ability to make your body tense, which helps climbers pull themselves up. Lower-body strength is actually more important than upper-body strength.
Rock climbing seems to be different and dangerous, but most people can do it if they are brave enough. Beginners can start with climbing small rocks three to five meters tall, so that falling won’t result in serious injury.
