In a study led by Ellen Langer of Harvard University, researchers asked people to translate sentences into a new a made-up language. Subjects who practiced the language moderately beforehand made fewer errors than those who practiced extensively or not at all. High levels of knowledge can make people too attached to traditional ways of viewing problems across fields the arts, sciences, and politics. High conscientiousness is related to lower job performance, especially in simple jobs where it doesn’t pay to be a perfectionist. How long we stay on the clock and how we spend that time are under careful examination in many workplaces. The young banker who eats lunch at his desk is probably seen as a go-getter, while his colleagues who chat over a relaxed conference-room meal get dirty looks from the corner office. “People from cultures that value relationships more than ours does are shocked by the thought of eating alone in front of a computer”, says Art Markman, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas, Austin. Social interaction has been shown to lift mood and get people thinking in new directions and in ways that could help improve any post-lunch effort. Markman also promotes off-task time. “Part of being a good thinker is experiencing things that are seemingly unrelated to what you are working on at the moment but give you fresh ideas about your work,” he says. “Also, there is a lot of research showing that a positive mood leads to higher levels of productivity and creativity. So, when people do things to increase their life satisfaction, they also make themselves more effective at work.”24. What does Ellen Langer’s study show?A. It is worthwhile to be a perfectionist B. Translation makes people knowledgeable.C. Simpler jobs require greater caution. D. Moderate effort produces the best result.25. The underlined word “go-getter” in paragraph 3 refers to someone Who_______.A. is good at handling pressure B. works hard to become successfulC. a has a natural talent for his job. D. gets on well with his co-workers26. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. A good thinker is able to inspire other people.B. Experience unrelated to your job is useless.C. A cheerful mood helps make a creative mind.D. Focusing on what you do raises productivity.27. What does the text seem to advocate?A. Middle-of-the-road work habits. B. Balance between work and family.C. Long-standing cultural traditions. D. Harmony in the work environment. CCalling vegetables and fruits “ugly” can be a recipe for sales success, according to a new study.A French supermarket chain made international headlines when it began marketing misshapen produce as “ugly” in 2014. Since then, food stores around the world have launched campaigns to sell “imperfect produce”. Some have been successful, while others haven’t — but until now, researchers hadn’t adequately explained why consumers rejected imperfect produce, or what marketing approach was most likely to whet their appetites. The researchers conducted seven studies that tested the effects of “ugly” labeling by having participants purchase produce at a farmer’s market and online, and by examining people’s impressions about misshapen foods. Interestingly, they found that consumers expected the imperfect produce to be less tasty and even less nutritious than more traditionally attractive foods. But it’s not all bad news for unattractive foods. The researchers also found that when the produce is labeled “ugly”, consumer hesitancy disappears — and it’s not because of humor or originality. Calling items “ugly” signals to consumers that the only difference between items is appearance, which makes them aware of their bias (偏见) and significantly increases their willingness to buy the less attractive produce.“We’re pointing to the source of the rejection,” explains John Meredith, the lead researcher. “It makes people aware of the limited nature of their objection to the unattractive produce and makes it clear to consumers that there are no other problems in the produce other than attractiveness.” The research also found consumers spent more on the misshapen produce labeled “ugly” instead of “imperfect”. And even though the ugly produce was sold at a 25 percent discount, it turned out to be more profitable for sellers, as the cost of acquiring the ugly produce was lower. However, if the price reduction was too sharp, participants expected the “ugly” foods to be of low quality.28. What is the new study mainly about?A. Food quality. B. Consumer demand.C. Marketing approach. D. Bias against appearance.29. What does the underlined phrase “whet their appetites” in paragraph 2 refer to?A. Satisfy their need to eat better. B. Stimulate their desire of buying.C. Encourage them to risk trying out. D. Raise their concerns about nutrition.30. Why are people willing to buy ugly-labeled produce without hesitation?A. They are happy to spend less and have more.B. They are curious about the special shapes of produce.C. They are attracted by the funny and creative idea of labeling.D. They are led to believe ugly produce has no quality problems.31. A. Call the ugly produce “ugly”. B. Label the ugly produce “imperfect”.C. Group the produce by its attractiveness. D. Price the ugly produce at a sharp discount. DMigratory (迁徙的) birds are declining globally because of the way that humans have changed the landscape over recent decades — according to new research from the University of East Anglia (UEA).A new study published today reveals that population declines have been greatest among species that migrate to areas with more human infrastructure — roads, buildings, power lines, wind turbines (涡轮机) — as well as more population and hunting levels.Dr. James Gilroy, from UEA’s School of Environmental Sciences, said, “We know that migratory birds are in greater decline than non-migratory species, but it’s not clear why. We want to find out where in their life cycles these migratory species are most exposed to human impacts.”The research team identified 16 human-induced threats to migratory birds, including infrastructure associated with bird disturbance and impacts, transformation of land from natural habitat to human land use, and climate change. Advances in satellite imagery allowed the team to map each of the 16 threats across Europe, Africa and Western Asia. The team also created the first ever large-scale map of hunting pressure across the region. A total of 103 species of migrating birds were studied, including many rapidly declining species like the turtle dove and the common cuckoo, using large-scale datasets. The team calculated threat scores for factors such as habitat loss and climate change, across breeding locations, as well as non-breeding ranges. They then explored the relationships between these threat scores and bird population trends calculated from 1985 to 2018 by the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme (PECBMS).Dr. Aldina Franco, also from UEA’s School of Environmental Sciences, said, “Our findings are important because we need to understand where declining species are being most impacted by humans across their seasonal migrations. Locating where birds are most exposed to these threats could help us target conservation actions.”32. What causes migratory birds to decrease?A. A longer migratory route. B. Serious industrial pollution.C. Illegal hunting from humans. D. The changing of landscape.33. What does the underlined word “infrastructure” in paragraph 2 refer to?A. Basic systems and services. B. Local transportation.C. Internet facilities. D. Power supplies.34. What does paragraph 4 talk about?A. The results of the study. B. The promise of the study.C. The process of the study. D. The database of the study.35. What is the purpose of studying migratory birds according to Dr. Aldina Franco?A. To raise people’s awareness of protecting birds.B. To offer advice to do conservation work precisely.C. To stress the necessity of increasing bird population.D. To state the importance of living in harmony with nature.  第二节(5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Wherever you live you all want a home where you can just get in and forget the outside world. The school didn’t open that day in fact. My freshman son wanted to go to the university a few days earlier so that he could do some preparation work and most importantly, some research work that was related to his courses.Early that morningMarie, my wife and Itogether with my son Eric started from our home at Calari. Eric was really excitedsince he would go to the university that he had been dreaming for since a child We talked a lot and had a very happy journey. When we arrived at the university, we helped Eric settled in his dormitorywhich was empty at the moment. The other students would not arrive until three days later, when the university was scheduled to open. Although felt a little lonelyEric was happy and even excited^ for he would have enough time to launch his plan. After a simple lunchwe had a short visit to the campus. There were old but wonderful buildingswhich surely experienced time and weather. The big grasslands in the campus is lush and refreshing. Of course there were some modern facilities. The libraries, the gym and the playground were also attractive and encouraging. We also found a small store, where there were all kinds of items that students would need. I went into the store and bought some water in case we should need them on our way back home. The young man in the store was helpful and gave me his name card, obviously hoping I might need it.We said goodbye to each other at about four and we directly headed home. At 11 o’clock that evening, I got a call from Eric. He said he suffered serious stomachache and might need to go to the doctor, but no one was around to ask for help.
