B
My work started in 2003 at my local animal shelter’s Adoption Department. It seems like such a long time ago. In the 13 years that have passed, more than 50,000 animals have passed the doors of the shelter. Most of them, I do not remember. But occasionally there are animals who stand out. Tabby was one such animal.
Tabby was one of the many homeless dogs. What’s more, she was blind and deaf. Tabby’s chances at adoption seemed remote at best. But one day a woman named Loretta came to the shelter. Her son, Gary, who suffered from epilepsy(癫痫)had seen Tabby’s picture on the shelter’s website. They were interested in meeting her! Most boys would want a puppy, a dog who could grow with him and run through grassy fields on summer days. Tabby would never be able to do that. But as they say, “love is blind.” After meeting her, they decided to adopt Tabby!
If Tabby’s story had simply ended with her successful adoption, it would still have been something very special indeed but it was what happened after her adoption that some might label as “magical”. As Gary and Tabby did everything together, they became so “in tun” with one another that Tabby began to telegraph Gary’s seizures(疾病发作)before they occurred, giving his family a warning that one was about to strike. What’s more, Gary seemed to be having fewer and fewer seizures since Tabby’s arrival.
How could it be? There are some things that happen in this world that challenge all logic and understanding. Sometimes the best that we can do is to accept a miracle, which we didn’t attempt to explain. Because when you try to explain it, you lose the beauty and wonder of it all.
24. What is the purpose of listing the data in the first paragraph?
A. To stress the necessity of protecting animals.
B. To show the author’s devotion to adopting animals.
C. To illustrate Tabby’s uniqueness.
D. To prove the difficulty of the work in the animal shelter.
25. What can we learn about Tabby from the text?
A. She was so lovely that she could be easily adopted.
B. She suffered a lot from the disease-epilepsy.
C. She was so strong that she could run very fast.
D. She was homeless and couldn’t see or hear.
26. Why did the author think magic happened?
A. Because Gary and Tabby did everything together.
B. Because Gary was cured in the company of Tabby.
C. Because Tabby could indicate a seizure before it struck.
D. Because Tabby learned to read messages by telegraph.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Love is Blind: An Amazing Dog B. Give Me Food: My Dear Master
C. Love is Everywhere: Poor Tabby D. Take Me Home: My Dear Boy
C 25. D 26. C 27. A

根据文章第一段“My work started in 2003 at my local animal shelter’s Adoption Department. It seems like such a long time ago. In the 13 years that have passed, more than 50,000 animals have passed the doors of the shelter. Most of them, I do not remember. But occasionally there are animals who stand out.
根据文章第二段的“Tabby was one of the many homeless dogs. What’s more, she was blind and deaf(Tabby是许多无家可归的狗之一。而且,她又瞎又聋)”可知,Tabby是一只无家可归的狗,并且看不见、听不到。故选D项。
【26题详解】

What’s more, Gary seemed to be having fewer and fewer seizures since Tabby’s arrival.(Tabby在Gary的癫痫发作之前就开始给他发警告,给他的家人一个警告,说有人要发作了。
结合第二段的“Love is blind (爱是盲目的)”和最后一段的“Sometimes, the best that we can do is to accept a miraculous thing, which we didn’t attempt to explain.(有时候,我们能做的最好的事情就是接受一件我们没有试图解释的奇迹)”可知,正因为爱是盲目的,Tabby才能被接纳和收养,同时它也积极地改善了小男孩的身体情况,这是神奇的一件事情,Tabby也是一条神奇的狗。 故选A项。
C
Color can affect moods, emotions and even actions. This includes sleep and health. In ancient cultures, color therapy is even used as a method of healing.
The color blue has been thought to stimulate (促进) a sleep state. Exposure to blue light can help lower body temperature and blood pressure. A decrease in blood pressure and body temperature is the preparation that signals to the body that it’s time to sleep. Therefore, seeing the color blue when you are ready to rest may cause the response and help you fall asleep more easily.
While there is much evidence that blue is the best choice for your bedroom walls, it’s really the tone that influences your sleep, not the color itself. Deep blue or other neutral (中性的) tones will even make a small bedroom seem more spacious.
While soft colors and earth tones are the most calming and restful bedroom colors for sleep, bright colors prevent your brain activity. These colors stimulate brain activity and stop you from falling asleep. While many parents paint their children’s rooms with bright colors, it’s better to choose fun, playful colors in gentle tones to encourage their kids to go to sleep. Light yellow, green and blue are all amazing choices to paint your children’s bedroom.
What you should remember is that never paint your bedroom walls purple! Purple stimulates creative thought and can lead to extremely vivid nightmares. Other bad choices for bedroom colors include bright reds and bright oranges. These colors stimulate the brain and increase energy. For example, red causes passion, increases energy and may even help you move more quickly. It may be a better choice for your home gym than for your sleep space.
Regardless of the size of your room, there are a few tones that we suggest for creating a healthy space for deep sleep. The most important factor is that you feel relaxed, calm and restful in the room. You should also keep your bedroom free from mess as much as possible and keep it clean. In your bedroom, sleep should be your main focus.
28. What is the effect the color blue has on people?
A. It can cause high blood pressure. B. It can keep the brain active.
C. It can adjust the sleep state. D. It can cool the body down.
29. Which color can help make the room look larger?
A. Light grey. B. Deep pink. C. Deep red. D. Orange.
30. What’s Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Ways to make sure of good sleep. B. Bad colors for the bedroom.
C. Color and brain activities. D. The advice on health.
31. What plays a key role in sleep?
A. The room is decorated well. B. The room is free from rubbish.
C. The room makes you feel at ease. D. The room shows different tones.
D 29. A 30. B 31. C

根据第三段的“Deep blue or other neutral tones will even make a small bedroom seem more spacious.(深蓝色或其他中性色调甚至会让小卧室看起来更宽敞)”可知,中性色调能够让房间看起来更加宽敞。 故选A。
根据第五段“What you should remember is that never paint your bedroom walls purple! Purple stimulates creative thought and can lead to extremely vivid nightmares. Other bad choices for bedroom colors include bright reds and bright oranges. These colors stimulate the brain and increase energy. For example, red causes passion, increases energy and may even help you move more quickly. It may be a better choice for your home gym than for your sleep space.(你应该记住的是永远不要把卧室的墙壁漆成紫色!紫色能激发创造性思维,并能导致极其生动的噩梦。卧室颜色的其他不好选择包括亮红色和亮橙色。这些颜色刺激大脑,增加能量。例如,红色可以激发激情,增加能量,甚至可以帮助你更快地行动。这可能是一个更好的选择,为您的家庭健身房,而不是为您的睡眠空间)”可知,本段要介绍了一些不利于睡眠的颜色。故选B。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段的“The most important factor is that you feel relaxed, calm and restful in the room.(最重要的因素是你在房间里感到放松、平静和宁静)”可知,一个让人感到轻松自在的房间是保持良好睡眠的最重要的因素。故选C。

Several days ago Spanish fashion brand Zara sparked a fee debate after releasing its latest campaign featuring a Chinese model with freckles(雀斑). Actually, there are some different beauty standards between the East and the West.
In East Asia, freckles might be considered a “destructive weakness” for celebrities, especially actors or singers. Although normal people don’t care that much, subconsciously they might prefer a “clean” face. Generally speaking, freckles are more likely to appear if people are out in the sun frequently, and most East Asian women avoid the sun as best they can.
Having freckles, instead, is a trademark for unconventional beauty in the Western world, and some call freckles “angel kisses”. For most westerners, having freckles is no longer just something you have to live with; instead, it is something to be desired. After all, not everyone is lucky enough to have freckles.
When it comes to eye shapes, it seems Western and Chinese beauty standards don’t see eye-to-eye. Many Chinese think girls with big eyes are the most beautiful. If their eyes have a double fold eyelid, that is considered perfect. However, most foreigners seem to prefer Chinese girls with slanted(斜的)and narrow eyes and eyebrows. Chinese known model Lyv Yan is often considered the country’s most beautiful by foreigners, while quite a few Chinese people think her appearance doesn’t fit with traditional beauty standards.
Young, girly feature or hot and mature feature? Zhao Liying from China, Aragaki Yui from Japan and Lim Yoon-A from South Korea enjoy high popularity in Asia, as they boast bright faces with warm smiles, which win them lots of male fans. The three young celebrities represent Asia’s beauty standards: women with cute, girly features. Most women in Asia try their best to stay young accordingly. Unlike Chinese girls, Western girls think a more mature look shows independence and uniqueness. The superhero Wonder Woman is an ideal type for most.
As ties continue to grow between China and the West, it is unavoidable that these beauty standards develop. But one thing’s for sure — no matter how you look, you are who you are, and that should be satisfaction enough.
32. What do most western people think of having freckles?
A. It is something unbearable.
B. It is a destructive weakness.
A. It is something to wish for.
D. It is a symbol of traditional beauty.
33. What do the underlined words “see eye-to-eye” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Have the same opinion.
B. Recognize their strengths.
C. Misunderstand each other.
D. Argue against one another.
34. Why do western girls prefer to appear mature?
A. They think this beauty standard is better.
B. They want to look independent and unique.
C. They hope to have high popularity in Asia.
D. They admire Wonder Woman very much.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. What Zara’s beauty standard is.
B. Why Chinese people don’t like freckles.
C. What causes the different beauty standards.
D. How easterners and westerners think of beauty.

I was a single mother in my 30s who lived down and out with my daughter Peggy in a small apartment, struggling hard to make our needs meet.
One day, I headed to the downtown for an interview. I sat down in the streetcar, and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle decorated with gold scrolls, among which there was a name carved.
On impulse(冲动) I determined to find the owner myself. I got off the streetcar in the heavy rain and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name, I found it immediately and called it, waiting patiently, and then a lady answered.
"Yes, “she said in surprise, with extreme excitement." It was my umbrella which had been stolen a year ago.”
So appealing was her pleasure that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small house. She took the umbrella, with teary eyes, explaining with choking voice that the umbrella was given by her parents, now dead, Her happiness at retrieving(找回)this special possession was such that to have accepted her reward would have spoiled something, so I refused her offer and left.
The following months were hard. I can only obtain temporary employment, for a small salary. What was worse, I had just lost my last job before Christmas, with only fifteen dollars left. Unless a miracle happened, I would be homeless in January, foodless and jobless. I had prayed steadily for weeks, and there had been no answer but this coldness and darkness.
The air was full of Christmas merriment, with the bells ringing and children shouting in the bitter dusk of the evening. But there should be no Christmas for me, I knew, no gifts, no remembrance whatsoever.
Thinking of this, I couldn’t control my tears on my way home, but I managed a smile so could greet my little daughter. She opened the door for me and threw herself in my arms, screaming joyously and demanding desirably for her Christmas gift. There I stood, frozen, overwhelmed by misery.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, a note attached to one package caught my eyes.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus. Then I heard man talking heartily to her and went to the door, He was a delivery man, and his arms were full of parcels. “This is a mistake, " I said, but he read the name on the parcels and they were for me. When he had gone, I didn't know what to do. Later, Peggy and I sat on the floor looking at each other. What a surprise! I looked for the name of the sender.
Suddenly, a note attached to one package caught my eyes. I picked up the note, which read "Thanks for returning of the umbrella. Merry Christmas! ""It was sent by the lady. Holding the note tightly, I was on the verge of tears, with a stream of warmth spreading through my body. On that cold Christmas, I forgot I had no money for the rent and only fifteen dollars in my pocket. We just sat in our small apartment unwrapping the gifts one by one in happiness. A sweet peace flooded me like a blessing which made me hopeful again.

Text 10
W: Seven years ago, Mackenzie hurt her knee. She was just ten years old. A week later, her pain was still here. Then she found out about a disease called RSD. There’s no cure for the pain. Sometimes she felt so terrible that she stayed in bed for months. It was very difficult for her to walk. Her doctors tried everything: medicine, exercise, and other treatments. Nothing worked, except books.
Mackenzie read lots of books. The books helped her stop thinking about the pain. And she decided to help other children forget their pain, too. She found out about a treatment center for children nearby. The center had a new library, but no books. She asked all her friends and her parents’ friends to give books. Then she put ads in newspapers and made a website.
Mackenzie’s goal was to give 300 books to the library. But she soon had 3,000 books, and more were on the way! Today the number is more than 40,000. She started an organization—Sheltering Books. It now helps children in many states in the U.S.
