Welcome to Simon’s Rock Writing Workshop(研习班)
About it
In 1983, Simon’s Rock of Bard College began offering a three-week writing workshop for high school students. It is now part of the National Writing and Thinking Network, the largest association of summer writing programs and camps in the country. Former participants have gone on to colleges like Amherst, Harvard, Kenyon, Princeton and Yale.
About its staff
The staff are skilled teachers and writers with a special interest in the theory and practice of the nationally recognized Bard College Institute for Writing and Thinking. They are selected for the Simon’s Rock workshop camp because of their record of teaching excellence and their familiarity with the needs and abilities of younger writers.
About its features
Unlike conventional workshops in creative writing, it focuses on using informal, playful and expressive writing as a way to strengthen skills of language and thinking. Out of these informal writing activities, using techniques of peer response, students develop more polished pieces, ranging from personal descriptions to stories and poems. Workshop leaders write with their students, and there is frequent sharing of this informal writing, both in small groups and in the class as a whole.

Both humans and animals have enemies. It is easy for us to know the difference between our friends and our enemies. But can other animals do the same? Elephants can! They can use their sense of vision and smell to tell the difference between people who pose a threat(威胁) and those who do not. In Kenya, researchers find that elephants react differently to clothing worn by men of the Maasai and Kamba ethnic groups. Young Maasai men spear(刺)animals and thus pose a threat to elephants; Kamba men are mainly farmers and are not a danger to elephants.
In an experiment conducted by animal scientists, elephants were first presented with clean clothing or clothing that had been worn for five days by either a Maasai or a Kamba man. When the elephants noticed the smell of clothing worn by a Maasai man, they moved away from the smell faster and took longer to relax than when they noticed the smells of either clothing worn by Kamba men or clothing that had not been worn at all.
Clothing color also plays a role. In the same study, when the elephants saw red clothing not worn before, they reacted angrily, as red is typically worn by Maasai men. Rather than running away as they did with the smell, the elephants acted aggressively(攻击地) toward the red clothing.
The researchers believe that the elephants’ emotional(情绪的) reactions are due to their different senses of the smells and the sights. Smelling a potential danger means that a threat is nearby and the best thing to do is run away and hide. Seeing a potential threat without its smell means that risk is low. Therefore, instead of showing fear and running away, the elephants express their anger and become aggressive.

A.Elephants have sharper sense of smell than sight.
B.Elephants learn from their experience.
C.Elephants are more intelligent than other animals.
D.Elephants tend to attack rather than escape when in danger.

A survey of university students shows that those who place more online orders for food seem more likely to feel depressed. The Panel Study of Chinese University Students released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences surveyed students at 18 universities.
The survey found that time spent online in general had a significant impact on students' mental health. The longer a student spent online each day, the worse was the self-evaluation and the higher the likelihood of depression. For sleep quality, about 45 percent of student respondents gave themselves a score of 6 points out of 10. Data showed that 6.4 percent of university students order takeaway food online almost every day, followed by 16 percent who place orders 3 to 5 times a week and 21 percent who use the services 1 to 2 times weekly. Dr. Zhang Zhenyu, who participated in the research, said students on average had a self-assessment that rated their physical and mental health at 8.45 points. Over 36 percent scored more than 10 points on the CESD-10 depression scale. Zhang also found that 29.9 percent of students thought themselves "fat" or "very fat" and 54.3 percent said their appearance scored 6 out of 10.
According to the survey, 2.5 percent have had facial plastic surgery(整形手术) and 5.8 percent have plans to improve their appearance through surgery in the next three years. Among students who want plastic surgery and those willing to do it, girls take up to 64 percent and 79.8 percent respectively(依次).
The survey also showed that 22.6 percent of students were left-behind children when they were kids, which research defines as children separated from their parents for six months in a row who had to be looked after by others. Zhang said the early experience of separation from parents had a negative impact on students’ mental health and self-assessment scores. They also had higher depression scores than those who lived with parents.
The research team also found that students with good family economic conditions scored higher in all dimensions than students from poor families. Students with a good physical and mental status had strong time management and self-management abilities.
8.According to the surveyed students, how many of them make online orders for daily food?
A.6.4%. B.16%. C.21%. D.45%.
9.How is the second paragraph developed?
A.By making comparisons. B.By giving clear explanation.
C.By giving data. D.By following time order.
10.If a student spent a lot of time online, he (or she) would be ___________.
A.better in the self-evaluation
B.more likely to feel depressed
C.in high spirits in daily life
D.mentally and physically healthy
11.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Nine out of ten students regard themselves as fat or very fat people.
B.Many a girl shows no interest in facial plastic surgery.
C.Students who lived with their parents longer had lower depression scores.
D.A student with a strong body usually comes from a well off family.
D
This may sound like a joke about a lazy person’s dream job. Earn big money by staying in bed and watching TV. But this is really happening, and it’s a project of NASA and two European space agencies the Institute of Aerospace Medicine at the Cologne-based German Aerospace Center and the European Space Agency. I’s called Artificial Gravity Bed Rest Study, aimed at studying how the body adapts to weightlessness in space.
Scientists are seeking 12 women to spend two full months in bed in the fall at a German lab, plus an additional month there for preparation and recovery, The first 12 test subjects, all men, already have started the study.
Participants spend two entire months in bed and remain lying down even to do everyday things like eating, drinking and exercising. They also answer nature’s call and shower, but it’s unclear from the NASA website how those tasks are accomplished in bed.
“Daily routine showering, getting dressed, eating, exercising takes much time when you cannot stand up to do them,” says the website, adding that there is “continuous data collection”, including blood pressure, heart rate, nutrient absorption and also the participants’ feelings. Study subjects will spend the 60 days with their heads tiled down six degrees, which imitates conditions in space.
Participants are encouraged to pass the time by watching TV, taking online courses, reading and any other activities they can perform while lying down alone in bed to relieve what could be boredom. Family and friends are allowed to visit.
The high $ 18,500 payment for two months of lazing about is probably a major motivation for people willing to go through something this extreme. However, if you’re an American who really needs the money, you probably can’t afford it. Candidates need to travel to Cologne four times at their own expense for the employment process between April and July. Plus, they need strong German-speaking skills Also participants need to be nonsmokers between ages 24 and 55, in good health, with normal body weight.
12.What are participants expected to do during the study?
A.Report their feelings regularly. B.Complete their daily routines in bed.
C.Keep their bodies tilted down six degrees. D.Record their physical responses every day.
13.What data about the participants will the researchers collect?
A.The changes in their weight. B.Their behaviors to weightlessness.
C.The ways they do their daily things D.Their physical and mental reactions
14.What will be a challenge for the participants?
A.The language skills they need. B.The difficulty meeting family.
C.The possibility that they feel dull. D.The slow discovery of their health.
15.The requirements for potential participants are__________.
A.challenging for Americans B.tailored to thin persons
C.easy for the youth to satisfy D.suitable for most people
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Teenagers are supposed to be moody, right? One moment they are happy and laughing the next they are slamming their door to their room and crying into their pillow. You tell yourself, “Its just hormones,” and try to brush it off. Chances are you are right. ____16____Here are four questions to consider when assessing your teenager’s anxiety.
___17___ Most teenagers are known for staying up late and sleeping until noon especially on the weekends. Your teen’s sleep cycle does naturally shift to a later bedtime because they are releasing sleep hormones later in the evening . Most teens need anywhere from 8 to 10 hours of sleep to feel good and function well. If your teen is getting 12 or more hours of sleep on a regular basis, this could indicate that something is off. If there is no medical condition, this can be a symptom of depression. Talk to your teen about their sleep habits and find out if they are really tired or using sleep to avoid facing stressors.
Have their eating habits changed? Did your teen’s healthy appetite suddenly go away? Are they not coming down for dinner anymore or skipping breakfast? Has your son or daughter’s weight suddenly changed in either gained or lost weight over a short period of time with no explanation? Large changes in your teen’s appetite and weight could be a symptom of depression. ______18______ So see your child’s pediatrician(儿科医生) if this is the case.
Are they self-isolating? To some extent, teenagers do tend to spend more time alone in their rooms and enjoy their privacy. If, however they are choosing to spend time alone instead of hanging out with friends, or engaging in activities they once enjoyed, it’s time to get curious.___________19___________Teens today can get sucked into their rooms because streaming movies on Netflix or something alike. Parents need to encourage them to develop face-to-face relationships and be more fully present in their lives.
Do they have low self-esteem? Middle school and high school years are all about fitting in, being popular or being good at something. There is pressure to be smart, pretty, athletic, popular, etc. and this can sometimes make your child feel less than they should. Parents can play a large role in boosting self-esteem by offering authentic praise, giving a lot of support, laying off the pressure to be perfect in school with straight A’s or excelling in sports and just accepting them how they are. _____20_____
A.Does your teen sleep well ?
B.Does your teen sleep too much?
C.It’s important to rule out a medical condition.
D.It’s normal for teenagers today to be moody or depressed.
E.Letting your teen know you love them no matter what goes a long way.
F.Talk to your teen about why they don’t want to spend time with friends and family.
G.But knowing whether your teen is just moody or depressed could save your teen’s life.
