Irving Chais was a "doctor in a toy hospital" in New York. He performed all kinds of “operations” on his patients — stuffed toys.

Chais had always been good with his hands. When he was a child y Chais learned how to cut and sew, so he could make clothes for his family of five. He began repairing toys when his daughter asked him to fix her worn-out bear Legna. One day, a customer who learned about his special techniques suggested he open a "toy hospital.” There were such hospitals in Japan but she believed Chais was more skilled. Chais accepted the proposal.

In order to restore a doll to its original appearance, Chais usually went to the library to research the fashion, designs, styles and materials from when the toys were new. Chais spent a lot of time shopping at fabric markets and wool stores to look for the exact material to match the original. Sometimes searching threads of one particular color could take him four or five days.

But that was not all. Chais knew how important it was to keep each toy's unique appearance and personality. Many owners asked him to restore their treasured possessions in line with the images rooted in their minds from childhood. He showed owners pictures and videos to seek their agreement before every step. He never got jaded by making adjustments until clients were satisfied. "The most extreme case was when it once took me three days and nights to adjust the position of the eyes." he said.

Chais felt his work paid off every time owners were happy and expressed their thanks. He also felt that during the lengthy repair process, when he listened to owners' stories, discussed with them their requirements, checked every detail of the repair, and answered their questions when the toys were returned, he was giving them psychological comfort.

    24. What pushed Irving Chais to open a toy hospital?

    A. A customer's suggestion. B. His experience of repairing Legna.

    C. His love for sewing from childhood. D. A visit to such a hospital in Japan.

    25. What does Irving Chais mean by saying “The most extreme case was when it... of the eyes." in paragraph 4?

    A. He was content with his eyesight.

    B. He loved the job even though it took long to deal with a minor problem.

    C. He hated it when it took him a long time to repair toys.

    D. He was unsatisfied with the position of the eyes.

    26. Which of the following can best describe Irving Chais?

    C. Creative and brave. D. Careful and devoted.

    27. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. A Toy Doctor Gave Old Toys New Life B. Toy Hospitals Are Gaining Popularity

For years, communities around Kenya's Tsavo National Park have been troubled by elephants straying 走失into their farms and homes. Residents are caught unawares whenever the huge creatures turn up in their villages, hurting people and destroying things.

Enter four innovators who are now taking the global scene by storm. Four Kenyan teens Sandra Lukindo, Joyce Mtoto, Nancy Wairimu and Macrina Antonia came up with a solar-powered sensor kit to alert 使              戒备the authorities to stray elephants. These four youngsters won the Startup Africa Competition.

The device is an integration of motion sensors and the Global System for Mobile communication with the ability to send strong signals and raise alarms once an elephant is on the way to a village. "It has a red light, which indicates that power is on. A sensor set to track an elephant passing about 180m away raises a siren 警报器,which alerts both the community and Kenya Wildlife Service KWS officials through a short message service," Wairimu said.

“This device will take care of both the elephant and the community. The number of elephants being killed secretly keeps increasing," Antonia said. She cited research showing that KWS struggles to deal with illegal hunters in the vast park.

George Nagwala, KWS assistant director, said the creation is an effective way of solving the human-wildlife conflict, “We are happy because the community is getting a unique way of dealing with this problem, even as our officers work around the clock to safeguard wildlife and the community,'

Nagwala said. The wildlife service is currently using radio collars to map out the elephants' migratory routes and identify how far they travel in search of water and vegetation.

    28. What has been a long-term headache for residents near Tsavo National Park?

    A. Their villages being crowded with visitors.

    B. Their houses being destroyed by storms often.

    C. Their daily life being impacted by stray elephants.

    D. Their farmland being taken up to make room for the park.

29, Why does Wairimu say the words in paragraph 3?

    A. To discuss the wide application of their device.

    B. To explain what inspired their invention.

    C. To demonstrate how their device works.

    D. To introduce the elephants they have spotted.

    30. How might the device benefit KWS according to Antonia?

    A. It can help fight illegal elephant hunting.

    B. It can replace the old-fashioned radio collars.

    C. It can map out the elephants' migratory routes.

    D. It can offer a cheap way of driving elephants away. 31. What is Nagwala's attitude to the device?

    A. Negative. B. Positive. C, Doubtful. D. Neutral.

    D

In the early 1900s, Clara Ford enjoyed driving her electric car around Detroit instead of one of the noisy petrol-powered Model Ts her husband Henry had begun making. Around the same time, elegant electric launches 大型汽艇traveled silently along the River Thames in Britain, using dockside stop-offs to top up their batteries with electricity and their bars with champagne.

These days, thanks to worries about climate change, electric cars are making a comeback in eco-minded Norway, they account for more than half of new cars sold. Now electric boats are following. A number of companies are competing to become the marine equivalent of Tesla, the Californian company which builds some of the most fashionable and fastest electric cars. Rand, a Danish firm, has developed a range of traditional-looking electric motorboats. Zin Boats, a Seattle-based company, has two electric models, a tender and a five-seater speedboat. For more leisurely traveling, Serenity Yachts, a Cayman Islands boat builder, offers a 19. 4-meter hybrid 混合动力艇with 30 solar panels on the roof. In the electric mode the panels will power the boat along at a steady pace provided, of course, the sun is shining.

Candela, a Swedish company, is taking a different approach. Its six-seater Candela Seven uses hydrofoils 水翼to raise its body completely out of the water. This reduces friction, says Gustav Hasselskog, Candela's founder. That, in turn, cuts energy use by around 80%, which should help convince any captains with range anxiety. The hydrofoils also operate like the ailerons 副翼on an airplane's wing. Computer software similar to that which helps pilots fly jet fighters automatically turns the foils in different directions to stabilize the boat and prevent it from tipping over. The hydrofoils can pull back when the boat comes into dock or runs up to a beach. With a top speed of 30 knots about 56 kph and little wake, the Candela Seven can also be used for waterskiing. So far, 20 of the 30 speedboats ordered have been delivered. At €265,000 a pop, this shows early adopters of electric motorboats, like the buyers of the first Teslas, are happy to pay high prices.

32 Why does the author mention Clara Ford and electric launches?

    A. To explain electric launches can travel silently.

    B. To introduce the topic of the article.

    C. To show Clara contributed a lot to her husband's business.

    D. To show Clara preferred her electric car to Model Ts.

33 Which of the following can replace the underlined word “equivalent“ in paragraph 2?

    A. Vehicle. B. Passage. C. Ship. D. Transportation.

    34. Why does the Candela Seven use hydrofoils?

    A. To enable itself to travel at a high speed.

    B. To make itself look more elegant and draw more tourists,

    C. To make itself energy-saving and balanced on water.

    D. To make itself become much safer and hold more passengers.

    35. How does the text mainly develop?

    A. By showing logical connections. B. By following the order of time.

    C. By presenting research findings. D By providing some examples.

Years ago, I was a volunteer English teacher in a village in Cameroon, which I befriended one of my young students, Dick. He was very helpful to me and spent much evenings at my home, assisting me with chores in exchange for meal, and teaching me the ins and outs of life in the village. He never asked me for something, but I would regular buy him school supplies or clothing, as he was very poor but said he was motherless. At one point, I left him money care for my dog while I was away on a extended trip. After I left Cameroon, I lost in touch with Dick. I feel guilty for " abandoning him” —— guilt that haunted me for years.
