At least 36 people have been killed in a stampede (蜂拥) during the New Year’s celebrations in Shanghai, Another 47 injured people were hospitalized after the fatal crush in Chen Yi Square in the city’s waterfront Bund (外滩) area.

A man who brought one of the 47 injured to hospital said fake money was thrown down from a bar above the street. People rushed to pick up the money, causing the stampede.

Cui Tingting, 27, “It’s too cruel,” she said, “People in front of us had already fallen to the floor, and others were stepping all over them.”

Shanghai police said they haven’t made sure whether the fake money was the cause of the stampede, asking people to be patient.

Another witness, who gave his family name as Wei, said when he was in a hotel room nearby, seeing people trying to get on to a high platform overlooking the river. Xinhua News Agency said that people had been stepped on after falling down on the steps up to the platform. “We were caught in the middle and saw some girls falling while crying. Then people started to fall down, row by row,” a witness surnamed Yin told Xinhua.

Many of the injured were students and 28 of the dead were women. President Xi Jinping has requested an inquest into the cause of the accident.

At Shanghai Number One People’s Hospital, relatives of some of the injured were stopped from entering by almost 20 police cars. Social media posts show at least one person doing chest compressions on a shirtless person, while another lying on the ground nearby. 

A newspaper reporter George Chen posted to Twitter that the stampede happened right before midnight. “As a native of Shanghai, I believe this is the worst stampede accident in Shanghai history in recent years. Shock!” he said via Twitter.

Local media reported at Christmas that an official countdown (倒数) at the Bund had been canceled this year because of overcrowding last year.  Crowds of over 300,000 people attended last year’s countdown, growing from 100,000 when the event started three years ago.

    Once upon a time, there was a tortoise on a ship. Unluckily, the ship went down one day. Some time later the tortoise successfully swam to a land. There was nothing to eat on the land. All the sides of the land were water except for the east. The east side led up to a big mountain. To survive, the tortoise decided to climb to the top of the mountain. He hoped that he would be able to cross to the other side.

My Favorite Story

I like reading books, especially story books. Not only are they relaxing and fun, but also I can learn something from them. My favorite one is “The Rabbit and The Tortoise”. Let me tell you what it’s about.

Once upon a time, there lived a rabbit and a tortoise in the forest. One day, they decided to have a race. At first, the rabbit hurried in front of the tortoise. After a while, he felt tired and wanted to have a break. He thought it was impossible for the tortoise to run faster than him. So he lay on the road and soon fell asleep. But the tortoise didn’t stop. He went on running. Finally, by the time the rabbit woke up, the tortoise had already gotten to the destination. The rabbit couldn’t believe that the tortoise won the race.
