Examples I’ve come across which are perfect apps for students include Rockin Ramen, a student app featuring a number of nutritious recipes with Ramen as a main ingredient, and MealBoard, an app which plans healthy meals, grocery shops and recipes based on what you’ve got in the fridge.

During the 1930s, the Great War broke out. A 25-year-old American soldier, probably never thought that his life would change forever when he volunteered to go to France.

One night while the American unit was returning to the base after a bloody fight, Suleyman stumbled（绊倒） into the ground and noticed a bit of movement from the bush. Being stuck between two choices either its enemy or an animal, Suleyman found a five-year-old girl from the bushes shivering（颤抖） with cold and utmost fear. Due to the atrocity of the war, the girl was abandoned by her family and the whole village was killed.

During the war, it was impossible to find the child’s family so Suleyman took this little French girl under his wings and gave her an American name Flora which means like the flower. Soon, Flora became the apple of the eye of everyone living in the army camp.

For one and a half years, Flora and Suleyman became inseparable; however, every fairy tale comes to an end. When the war ended, Suleyman was sent back to USA, while Flora was put in an orphanage（孤儿院）, the Normandy School, which was founded by the American government for orphaned French children to have an education.

For years, Suleyman always thought about Flora. When the French National Olympic Team was playing in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984, Suleyman gazed through the audience on TV, hoping to catch a glimpse of Flora, but he never could.

At the age of 85, Suleyman attended the 60th anniversary reception of the Great War where Suleyman shared his story with American and French officials. After hearing his story, a French journalist started to investigate the story, and all government files were read in detail. The moment the journalist helped dial the number, in tears, Flora said Suleyman was her hero, and everything came flooding back to her.

It was another day of class. As the students practiced parkour (跑酷), a mother and her child walked past. “What are they doing, mum?” the child asked. “They are putting themselves in danger and it is something I will never want you to do,” the mother replied.

We recently had a Parkour for Everyone workshop at Bishan. Parkour is starting to get popular, but many parents do not understand it. Even I hesitate when I tell them I am a parkour coach. I can see their wonder, fear, or dislike. I get tired of explaining its life-changing benefits. Actually, there is a deeper meaning behind why parkour is practised. There is a huge surge of physical and emotional freedom that comes along with its practice.

Fortunately, times are changing. If the parents who do not like this art are positively changed by it, there will be no more doubt in the power that parkour can bring to man. My hope is that the day will come when it is common for parents to put aside electronic products and spend time moving and playing with their children in the open field. There are many fascinating aspects of ant life, but none may be a more practical lesson for us than their gift for avoiding traffic jams.

A new research paper published in the journal eLife reveals how ants keep traffic flowing by changing their behavior to meet changing conditions. For their experiments, researchers from the University of Toulouse and the University of Arizona focused on Argentine ants that frequently move from one colony (聚居地) to another depending on where the food is.

Exploring the Argentine ants’ gift for fast travel, the researchers built bridges connecting their colonies. The bridges varied in width from a fifth to three-quarters of an inch. The colonies, too, were of different sizes, ranging from 400 to more than 25,00 ants. Then they sat back and monitored the traffic.

To their surprise, even when those narrower bridges reached near capacity (容量), there were no 20-ant pile-ups. Indeed, there was never a hold-up. Traffic remained steady because ants were able to adjust to the change of road conditions. At some point, when the bridges got really busy, ants moved not so much as individuals but rather like water flowing in an ever widening stream.

“When the number of ants on the bridge increased, ants seemed to be able to assess the situation and adjusted their speed accordingly to avoid making the traffic flow stop,” the authors note in a news release. “Moreover, ants kept themselves from entering a crowded path and made sure that the bridge was never too crowded to cross.” Argentine ants are extremely effective in getting to where they need to be in a hurry.

The lesson for humans? The traffic problem may lie in our inability to adjust our driving habits for the good of the whole. “Traffic jams are everywhere in human society where individuals are pursuing their own personal objectives,” the authors write. “In contrast, ants share a common goal: the survival of the colony, thus they are expected to act cooperatively to optimize (优化) food return.”

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Kris, and I’m the chairman of the opening session. It’s my great pleasure to welcome you to our Air Quality Control Conference. We are honored to have one of the world’s best-known air quality experts, Dr. Richard L. Young to give a speech this morning. Dr. Young will review American accomplishments in the past two years, and consider the American air quality plan. He will also discuss ten years of progress in the coal producing cities of northern China.

We’ll have a coffee break at 10: 00 am, two-hour lunch break from 11: 30 am to 1: 30 pm, and at 1: 30 pm the first set of workshop sessions will begin Please check the blackboard at the registration desk for any room changes. And please remember that there is no smoking in the meeting rooms on the first floor and the workshop rooms on the third floor. The Oak Room on the second floor has been set aside as a smoking room. Please do not smoke anywhere else in the hotel.
