1). China has the biggest population in the world.

中国是世界人口最多的国家。

population意为“人口”时，是一个集合名词。它在句中作主语时，谓语动词通常用单数形式。其常用句型为“The population of +某地+ is + 数词”或“某地+ has a population of + 数词”，表示“某地有多少人口”。如：

The population of my city is three million.

◆ 当表示人口“多”或“少”时，常用形容词large，big或small修饰population。如：

The town has a large / big / small population.

◆ 当对人口数量进行提问时，要用疑问词what 或 how large。如： 

What / How large is the population of your country?

feel free是英语口语中一个常用表达。若有人让你feel free to do something, 就是让你无需拘束，只管按照自己的意愿去做某事。

e.g. A: Can I use your bathroom? 我可以用一下你的卫生间吗？

B: Yes, feel free. 可以，请随意。

3).The main reason was to protect their part of the country.

主要原因是为了保护国家领土。

protect作动词，意为“保护”。protect ... from ...意为“保护……不受……的侵害”，与protect ... against ...同义。如：

The sheepdog protects the sheep from / against danger.

牧羊犬保护羊群免遭危险。

【拓展】protect的名词形式为protection。如：

The children need protection.儿童需要保护。

4). As far as I know, there are no other man-made objects as big as this.

  据我所知，再没有像它这样大的人造物体了。

1) as far as I know是一个固定的表达方式，还可以说so far as I know, 意思是“据我所知”。

e.g. As far as I know, Jack’s got twin sisters.就我所知，杰克有一对孪生姐妹。

They’re not coming today, so far as I know.他们今天不来了– 就我所知是这样的。

2) 句中man-made是一个合成形容词，意为“人造的”。像这样与-made复合而成的形容词不止一个。用以描述产品的生产或制造手段，特点等，常见的有：

handmade—手工制作的

homemade—家庭制作的

machine-made—机制的

tailor-made—量体定制的；特制的；定做的

甚至还有像self-made (自学而成的；自我奋斗而成的；天然形成的)可以用来描述人。

形容词和副词的比较级用于两者之间的比较, 表示“较…...”或“更……一些”；形容词和副词的最高级用于三者或三者以上的人或物之间的比较，表示“最……”形容词最高级前一般要加定冠词the，副词最高级前的the可以省略。

二、比较级的用法

“比较级+than any other+可数名词单数”=“比较级+than the other+可数名词复数”表示“比其他任何……都……”, 表示最高级含义， 可与表示最高级的句子进行转换。

My father is the tallest one in my family.

=My father is taller than any other member in my family.

=My father is taller than the other members in my family.

可用于修饰形容词和副词比较级程度的副词（短语）有：much, a little, even, a lot, a bit, far等。

二、最高级的用法

1.（the + ）最高级 + in/of 短语

该结构意为“……中最……的”。

I think spring is the best time of a year.

Tom works (the) hardest in Class 3.

2. one of the + 最高级 + 可数名词复数 + in/of 短语

该结构意为“……中最……的……之一”。

Hangzhou is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

3. the + 序数词 + 最高级 + 可数名词单数 + in/of 短语

该结构意为“……在……中是第几……的……”（从第二开始）。

China is the third largest country in the world.

4. Which/Who … + 最高级, A, B or C?

该结构意为“A，B，C中，哪个/谁最……？”。

Which is the biggest, Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou?

【特别提醒】(1)最高级前有物主代词、名词所有格等修饰时，其前不加the。

The Yangtze River is China’s longest river.

(2)当most表示“非常”时，其前不加the。

It is a most useful book.
