One afternoon I took a trip to an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view of the masterpieces.
A young couple looking at the paintings in front of me chatted non - stop. I watched them a moment and decided she was doing all the talking. I admired this man for being so patient with her. Bored by their noise, I moved on. I met them several times as I moved through those rooms of art. Each time I heard her voice, I moved away quickly.
I was standing at the museum gift shop buying some cards when the couple walked to the exit.
“He’s a brave man,” the clerk said. “Most of us would give up if we were blind at such a young age. But he and his wife come in whenever there’s a new art show.”
“But what does he get out of the art?” I asked. “He can’t see.”
“His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”
I learned something about patience, courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person without sight and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life. People in different places have different habits, but their needs are similar. Needs are things we must have to live. Our bodies need food and water. We also need air. We need a place to live to keep us away from danger. We need clothes to keep us warm. If we do not have these things, we cannot survive.
Needs may be a little different for people who live in different areas. If you live where it is cold, you may need special clothes to keep you warm. If you live in hot places, you may need more water and fewer clothes.
People always find new ways to meet their needs. Farmers produce food that people eat. In the past, they planted seeds and picked plants by hand. Now they have machines help them do this work.
Wants are things people eager to have but do not need to live. Suppose you hope to get a basketball for your birthday. A basketball is a want because you can live without it.
Sometimes we may want something so much that it feels like a need. We have to make choices. For example, if you need a new coat for winter, you might not be able to get the basketball you want. We must choose what we need instead of what we want.
Sometimes we must make choices between things we want. Suppose you want to go to a birthday party for your uncle. But a friend asks you to go to a movie. The movie is at the same time as the party. If you choose to go to the party, then what will you have to give up? What will you have to give up if you go to the movie?
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
( ) 31. Which of the following things is most probably a need?
A. A basketball as a gift. B. A birthday party.

( ) 33. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Wants are things that people don’t need at all.
B. Wants are things everybody needs but don’t have.
C. Wants are things that nobody expects but already has.
D. Wants are things that people like but are not necessary.
( ) 34. Which statement shows the writer’s opinion?
A. What we want must always be put before what we need.
B. If we want something very much, it can become our need.
C. It’s important to make a choice between the things we want.
D. People from different areas have different needs completely.
( ) 35. How does the writer tell the differences between needs and wants?
A. By having interviews. B. By doing research.
C. By making a survey. D. By giving examples.

Some people seem to know how to start a conversation with anyone anywhere. 36 . Here are some easy ways to help you make conversations with someone new.
Say something about the surroundings.
If you’re at a party, for example, you could say, “I love this song.” or “The food’s great. Have you tried the chicken?”
Ask an open-ended question.
The question requires more than just a yes or no answer. You can ask a question that begins with one of the 5W1H: who, where, when, what, why, and how. For example, “Who do you know here? Where do you usually go on Friday? When did you move here? What keeps you busy? Why did you decide to become a teacher? How is the food?” 37 .
Give praise.
For example, “I really like your bag. 38 ” or “You look like you’ve done this before. Can you give me a hand?”
Keep the conversations going with small talk.
Don’t say something annoying and avoid big subjects like religion. 39 For example, you can talk about the weather or anything you have in common such as school, movies and sports teams.
Be a good listener.
Listening is not the same as waiting for your turn to talk. You can’t give your attention to what someone’s saying if you’re thinking about what you’re going to say next. 40 Nod, smile at the person, and make sure you look friendly.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使短文意思通顺、内容完整。
A. Can I ask where you got it? B. Try some relaxing subjects. C. If you’re not one of these people, don’t be sad. D. Pay attention to the speaker and show interest in what’s being said. E. Most people enjoy talking about themselves, so asking a question is a good way to get a conversation started. |
36. ______ 37. ______ 38. ______ 39. ______ 40. ______

As a result, there are often traffic jams in rush hours. It’s really time for us to do something.
We’re supposed to keep to the right while riding or walking. All the walkers and traffic should stop when the red lights are on. Above all, we must warm people of the dangers of breaking the traffic rules.
