On March 10, the Italian government decided to put the whole country on lockdown (封锁) after the number of cases in the country started increasing too fast. The first cases were confirmed as early as January 31. In the following weeks, the number of confirmed cases (确诊病例) exploded, reaching over 10,000 by the time of the lockdown. The lockdown affected 16 million people across the country. Italy was one of the first of many countries that carried out lock downs to prevent the spread of the virus.
WHO declares pandemic
On March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus officially declared COVID-19 as a global pandemic. This was due to a growing number of cases around the world. In his announcement, Ghebreyesus called on governments to slow down the spread of the virus by taking “immediate and urgent actions”. By this time, there were more than 20,000 cases in Europe, including 1,000 deaths, as well as 1,000 cases in the US.

This year, April 5 is Tomb Sweeping Day, a day when Chinese people remember family members and friends who have passed away. And this year will also include a national mourning (哀悼) period that offers people a chance to remember those who have lost their lives in the fight against the COVID-19.
Starting at 10 a.m. people across the country will observed (遵守) three minutes of mourning. Cars, trains and ships sound their horns (喇叭) and air defense warning sirens (防空警报) will go off. National flags will lower to half-mast (下半旗) across the country. Public recreational (娱乐) activities will be canceled across China.
“I will mourn in my heart,” said community worker Deng Linghao from Wuhan. “We who are alive must stay strong.”
National mourning periods are not commonly held. Only a few such mourning periods have been held since 2000, including one for the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan.
Besides being a time to remember the dead, many people also suggested that the national mourning period is a good time to teach students about the meaning of death.
It is believed that Chinese students don’t know much about the topic, as it is a taboo (禁忌) to discuss it in Chinese culture. According to a study from People’s Daily, about 90 percent of children who were born after 2010 said their parents had never discussed death with them.
But in Western countries, kids learn about death in a natural way. In the US, for example, if one of their older relatives has died, children will attend their funeral. Kids can also learn about death after one of their family pets dies. They might even learn about it from watching movies or TV shows.

How did you learn the facts about COVID-19 and the coronavirus that caused it? You probably read newspaper articles, searched for information on the internet and listened to online lectures. These methods, however, may not work well for children younger than you.
Some medical researchers in Memphis, Tennessee, wanted to help these little children deal with the COVID-19 crisis (危机). They have designed a special coloring book.
Kristin Canavera is one of the researchers. “We have seen a lot of misinformation about COVID-19. People, especially children, are feeling worried,” she said. “We really wanted to do something for them, to correct the misunderstandings.”
At first, Canavera and her colleagues wanted to produce resources for parents to use when they talk to their children about COVID-19. Then, they decided to make them directly for children. Children often learn best through play, so coloring is a great way to help them understand the disease.
The ten-page book gives kids the “real facts” about COVID-19. It also offers ways for parents to have open and honest discussions with their children about their fears. The book is available in English, Spanish and Arabic (阿拉伯语). Canavera and her colleagues first printed 750 paper copies for children in local hospitals. Later, they put the book online so that it could reach more readers during this special period. People around the world can now download it for free.
