①Hongcun is a famous ancient village in East China’s Anhui Province. Today Ancient Charm of China will take you to the “old village in a Chinese painting”. Let’s watch the documentary and enjoy the beauty of Hongcun.
②Lying at the southwestern foot of Mount Huang, the 891-year-old village has still kept its special Hui-style buildings— one of the major Chinese building styles from ancient times.
③The excellent houses in Hongcun were built during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1912). They all had white walls and grey roofs (房顶). And they were decorated with all kinds of carvings (雕刻图案).
④One of the best examples is the Chengzhi Hall. It was built in 1855by a rich businessman and it is now open to the public. Visitors can see the attractive woodcarvings on doors and windows. Five kilograms of gold powder (粉末) was used for decorating the carvings.
⑤Besides ancient houses, Hongcun is also known for its water scenery. Moon Pond, a semicircular (半圆的) man-made lake in the centre of the village, is the major attraction. The clear and quiet water helps people keep calm, and it is also perfect for taking pictures.
⑥In Chinese culture, the full moon is always the symbol of prosperity (繁荣). Then why wasn’t the lake made in the shape of the full moon? It’s said that though the full moon carries a good meaning, the half moon remains for longer than the full moon. By choosing the shape of the half moon, the locals hoped they could keep the prosperity of the village forever.

Now, the Law of the Jungle (丛林) says that if there is disagreement about the right of a cub (幼兽) to be part of the pack (兽群), he must be spoken for by at least two members of the pack who are not his father or mother.
“Who speaks for this man cub?” asks Akela, the leader of the wolf pack. “Which wolves speak for the man cub?” There is no answer. Mother Wolf gets ready for a fight. This is her last fight.
There is only one non-wolf animal allowed at the Pack Council. That is a sleepy brown bear called Baloo. Baloo teaches the wolf cubs the Law of the Jungle. He is accepted by the wolves because he doesn’t eat meat.
Now Baloo stands up on his hind (后面的) legs and shouts, “I speak for the man cub. There is no harm in a man cub. I have no gift for words, but I speak the truth. Let him run with the pack, and become part of the pack with the others. I can teach him the Law of the Jungle.”
“We need the other one,” says Akela. “Baloo speaks for the man cub, and he is the teacher of our young cubs. Who speaks for the man cub besides Baloo?”
A black shadow (影子) comes to them. It is Bagheera, the black panther (黑豹). Everybody knows Bagheera, and nobody wants to make him angry.
“Akela and the wolf pack,” Bagheera says. “I have no right to be part of your council. However, the Law of the Jungle says that a cub can be saved if someone pays a price for him. And the law does not say who mayor may not pay that price. Am I right?”
“Yeah, say the young wolves, who are always hungry.” Listen to Bagheera. The cub can be bought for a price. It is the law.”
“It is a shame to kill a helpless man cub. Baloo speaks for him. And I can give you one fat bull (公牛) killed a few days ago, if you accept the man cub according to the law. Is it difficult to decide?” Bagheera says.
There is a noise of lots of voices, saying, “Okay! He’s going to die in the winter rain. He’s going to burn in the summer sun. What harm can an unclothed cub do to us? Let him run with the pack. Where is the bull, Bagheera?Accept him!” And then Akela cried out, “Look well—look well, wolves!” After hearing the news, the tiger Shere Khan roars all night. He is very angry because the wolves accept the man cub.
