Welsh woman finds home bridging education gap in China
Gaenor Eleri Wynne, an English teacher from the UK, has taught Chinese students over the past 30 years in China. Visiting China was Wynne’s dream. Then, in 1992, she found it possible when she got a job in the northwestern city Xi’an. After a stint of teaching medical students English in Lanzhou, she moved to the eastern province of Shandong as the climate is similar to her hometown in Wales and good for her health. Now having stayed and taught in Weifang for 21 years, affection for the eastern Chinese city has rooted deeply in Wynne’s heart. “Here is much more my home than back in the UK,” she said.
Hangzhou facilitates Sino-Mexican collaboration
The Mexico-China Center is an innovation ( 创 造 ) platform based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, which is the only one in China co-financed by the Mexican government and a university in Mexico. This video tells the story about its president, Alfonso Araujo. Araujo has been living in China for over 20 years, but his favorite city remains Hangzhou. If there was a subject at school that made me anxious, it was science.
Maybe that’s because in tenth grade, I couldn’t understand my physics teacher’s instructions, causing me to accidentally set fire to the classroom. So, when my husband and I decided to homeschool our daughters, we made a deal: He would teach science, while I would handle everything else. However, my husband has been too busy to teach the girls. Recently, while out on my morning hike before starting lessons, I noticed that the sky was a beautiful blue one, and the air was filled with the sweet smell of flowers.
That’s why I decided that the day’s lessons would be taught outside, although I remembered that my daughters hadn’t had any science classes from my husband for a while. We headed up into the forest, settling ourselves by a pond that rarely has any visitors. I handed Ula a drawing board and the colored pencils. “We wait,” I told her,” and see if something comes along. In the meantime, just draw what’s around you.” We worked for more than an hour, barely (几乎不) speaking. A bird flew across the water, and then settled in front of a fallen log (原木). I quickly told Ula, worried that she’d not seen the creature. But she had, and she began drawing it. An hour later, she finished her picture, and I stared down at it. She drew the bird on her paper with amazing accuracy. But there was one other interesting fact about this drawing: She also drew me, sitting beside her.
I realized, as I gazed at this child’s drawing of us watching a bird, how I’d lived for 40 years and never understood the foundation (基础) of science before this moment. The foundation of science is a sense of wonder; it isn’t about accurately reciting words from a textbook. It is first about stepping outside our busy lives and marveling at (惊叹) the world around us.
And from that day, I insisted on taking over from my husband’s duty as the science teacher.
61. What was the author’s attitude toward science when she was in school?
A. She hated it very much. B. She worked hard on it.
C. She was fearful of it. D. She was looking forward to learning it.
62. Why did the author prefer her husband to teach her daughter science at first?
A. Because the author has to handle everything else.
B. Daughters would rather have their father teach them than her mother.
C. Because her husband was good at science and was available anytime to teach.
D. Because the fire accident which happened in her tenth-grade science class still had a negative effect on her.
63. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The fallen log. B. The forest. C. The frog. D. The bird.
64. Which of the following best describes Ula?
A. She’s very outgoing.
B. She’s good at observing.
C. She’s very hard-working.
D. She shares common interests with her sister.
65. In the author’s opinion, what is the foundation of science?
A. Teacher instruction. B. Attention to accuracy.
C. Curiosity about the outside world. D. The determination to find the truth.

It was a perfect summer morning on the beach in Rio De Janeiro. A man set up his umbrella and chair near the water and was ready to read his book. Just then, when he looked toward the sea, he noticed a small shape that came out of the water. It slowly made its way out onto the sand and began to flap (拍动) its wings. It was obviously weak and tired.
When the creature was just a few feet away, the man couldn’t believe his eyes. A penguin? Penguins don’t belong to Rio. The man was amazed. He looked around to see if there was anyone else noticing this strange sight.
A jogger soon appeared, followed by another. They stopped and stared. It was clear that the penguin was having trouble breathing. The first jogger looked at the sea and said, “Poor fellow, so far away from home. “
The penguin fell to its side. It had swum 2, 000 miles, trying to find the tiny fish that penguins like to eat. Why did the penguin need to travel so far? Perhaps it was confused by moving ocean currents and temperatures—common effects of global warming. The penguin needed help. It would not survive on the hot sand.
One of the joggers phoned for help, and soon some firemen arrived. The man was glad that the penguin would soon be safe, although he felt a little sad, too.
The event on the beach at Rio happened some time ago. It was only the beginning of penguin migration (迁移) to Brazil. Since that time, hundreds of penguins have appeared on the coasts of Brazil. They come all the way from Patagonia and the Straits of Magellan, southern parts of South America. They land on the sands very tired and hungry, and many of them die. Some are shipped or flown back to colder waters farther south.
Perhaps the experience of the penguins will help us better understand the serious effect of human activity on climate change and on the condition of our planet.
66. Why did the man think it strange to see a penguin on the beach of Rio?
A. Penguins there had already died out.
B. Penguins do not live in Brazil.
C. The penguin was not afraid of him.
D. The penguin was moving very fast.
67. What probably caused the penguin to land on the beach of Rio?
A. Global warming. B. Pollution in South America.
C. Penguins’ natural migration. D. Animal scientists’ help.
68. From the underlined sentence in the passage, we know that the writer ________.
A. is hopeful B. is happy C. is shocked D. is worried
69. We can infer that the writer’s writing purpose is to ________.
A. remind people to mind human activity and protect our planet
B. tell us the experience of the penguins
C. call on us to save the penguins on the beach of Rio
D. show people in Brazil are friendly to penguins
70. What is the best title for the text?
A. Brazil Beach B. South America Culture
C. Unexpected Guests D. Human Activity
