第二部分 阅读理解(2?20=40分)
It's not possible to stay together with loved ones all the time. Sometimes family members have to
be far away from each other. During that time they might face something terrible. Although we know what they are suffering, being far away makes it harder to help and comfort 安慰)loved ones. There is no use worrying a lot about them. Keeping a positive attitude of support is more helpful than getting into worrying about the person. I think it is what I can do to help my loved ones.
My daughter has been working full-time during summer about 10 hours a day. She has to study
hard for a big entrance exam. At first, like most people, I wanted to try to solve the problems and analyse(分 析)the situation .Was there a better way of time management ?Was there a better way of studying for this test? However, that was not always helpful. Sometimes, it even gave more pressure to
her. Sometimes it might sound like there was something wrong to fix. However, it was just tiring at the
end of the day. What would be the kind thing to do in this situation? It was hard to read someone抯 mind.I decided to just chat with her online and to send a hug emoji(表情符号)this time. It seemed
more suitable than talking about solutions.Giving space can also be an act of help, comfort and
kindness.
It is a fun and meaningful experiment to actively think about kind things to do rather than let it happen naturally. I've realised it and I'm grateful for this chance to share online. Give it a try too and you'll enjoy sweetness.

Language is born of culture and in turn reflects the history of a culture. This is clear when we compare English in Britain, the United States and Australia.
Of the three dialects,British English has the most confusing grammar and spelling rules. This is
probably because the development of English has been under the control of the upper class. The modern English language came into being in the 18th century. The upper class who spoke French
wanted to show their influence and make themselves different from the uneducated working people. In
other words, British English reflects the English character with class.
The US dialect is generally recognised as the easiest to understand. Compared with British English, its spelling is more connected with its pronunciation. And its grammatical rules are much
easier to follow. What抯 more, its words are simpler to pronounce. For foreigners,it抯 much easier to
learn.That抯 why American English is more popular in the world.
The reason why American English is simpler than British English is connected with its special
history. British English was mainly influenced by the upper class. But American upper class didn't
exist when American English was born. American English was based on the dialects spoken by working people from different countries. So the formation of American English was based on a rule to help all the working people with different cultural backgrounds communicate more easily.
Australian English is different from British and American English. It is the most vulgar 粗
俗的)of the three. Actually it has a tendency to show its invention, disrespect and humour. At times, this can make it almost impossible to understand and quite impolite to some educated speakers. That is
partly connected with special identity of the early settlers.
19.Why is British English more confusing than American English?
A.Because it was influenced by the upper class.
- Because English people are more educated.
C.Because it was totally created by Frenchmen.
D.Because England was more powerful in the past.
20.Why is American English more popular than British English worldwide?
A.Because it has fewer words.
B.Because the US has a shorter history.
C.Because the US has a larger population.
D.Because it is easier to learn for foreigners.
21.What can we infer from the passage?
A. Australian English is easy to understand.
B.Australian English is preferred by educated people.
C.Modern English became popular in the 18th century.
D.American English may develop from working people's language.
22. Which of the following can best describe Australian English ?
A.Polite. B.Rude. C.Welcome. D.Special.
C
The evidence for harmony(和睦)may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents.
An important new study into teenage attitudes shows that their family life is more harmonious
than it has ever been in the past. "We were surprised by just how positive today's young people seem to be about their families,? says one member of the research team.揟hey抮e expected to be rebellious(叛
逆的)but actually they have other things in their minds; they want a car and other material goods, and
they worry whether school is serving them well. There're more negotiations(协商) between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process.”
So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat
their children as friends. 揗y parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,攕ays 17-year-old Daniel Lazall.揑 always tell them when I抦 going out. As long as they know what I'm doing, they're fine with it.? Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees.揕ooking back on the last 10
2
years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiations. For example, as long as I'd done all my
homework,I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”
One of the researchers comments,揙ur astonishment that teenagers say they get along well with
their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. Now,the situation has changed.”
23. What does the new study show?
A.Teenagers are more rebellious.
B.Teenagers worry more about studies.
C.Teenagers dislike making family decisions
D.Teenagers have more negotiations with families.
24.What can we know about today's parents?
A.They are stricter than before.
B.They are more independent.
C.They give their children more freedom.
D.They care less about their children's life.
25.What does the underlined word 揳stonishment"mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Surprise. B.Aim C.Memory. D.option
26.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Discussion in family. B.Harmony in family.
C.Teenage trouble in family. D.Teenage education in family.

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?
Professor Simard from University of British Columbia explains how trees are much more complex
than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival
of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. As far as Simard is concerned, actually the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation, passing around necessary nutrition "depending on who needs it".
Nitrogen(氮)and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi(真菌) networks,
making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep
them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons(神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed,it affects all.
Simard talks about揗other trees?,usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees
depend. She explains how moribund trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow.
When humans cut down 揗other trees攚ith no awareness of these highly complex搕ree
societies攐r the networks on which they feed, we are redueing the chances of survival for the entire forest.
揥e didn抰 take any notice of it,擲imard says sadly.揟rees move nutrition into the young trees
before they die,but we never give them chance.擨f we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.
27.Which statement would Simard agree with?
A.Trees support each other. B.Trees compete for nutrition.
C.Trees depend on their needs. D.Trees co-operate with the fittest.
28. Why are the networks of neurons in brains mentioned in para 3?
A.To explain the importance of fungi networks.
B.To introduce the function of neurons networks.
C.To illustrate how Nitrogen and carbon are shared.
D. To show how the forest ecological system works.
29.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4mentioned in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Energetic. B. Ancient C. Previous. D. Dying.
30.What does Simard call on people to do?
A.Protect tree societies. B.Cut down oldest trees.
C.Get nutrition from nature. D.Improve our environment.
