It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, the moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.
Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that don’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech—“I Have a dream ”, you may notice that he stumbles(结巴)his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making. People care a lot about making mistakes in a speech because they regard speechmaking as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human.
As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.
    24. The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will .
    A. be smarter than you B. notice your mistakes
    C. do better than you D. know what you are talking about
    25. You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because .
    A. your attention is on the content
    B. you don’t fully understand the speech
    C. you don’t know what the speaker plans to say
    D. you find the way of speech-making more important
    26. It can be inferred from the passage that .
    A. giving a speech is like giving a performance
    B. one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad
    C. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made
    D. the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be
    27. What would be the best title for the passage?
    A. How to Be a Perfect Speaker
    B. How to Make a Perfect Speech
    C. Don’t Expect a Perfect Speech
    D. Don’t Expect Mistakes in a Speech

    C
“Can we eat this one, Dad?” my four-year-old daughter, Alicia, asks. We’re on one of our Thursday adventures, searching the nearby woods for eatable mushrooms. She’s pointing at a bright-red cap covered with white dots. I pull out my handy mushroom-identification app, which notes that Amanita muscaria, while eatable if prepared properly, is also a known hallucinogen ( 致幻剂). I have a firm “tell them the truth and be as precise as possible” philosophy and explain what the app says, and that I don’t think our Thursday adventures are ready to get quite that adventurous yet.
Watching your kids learn new skills is extraordinarily rewarding, but I’ve experienced more personal growth than I have at any other point in my life.
Last year, after a winter of practicing skiing on the green tracks for beginners each week, Alicia was french-frying her way down blues and even attempted her first black. That month also witnessed me visiting the mountain more times than in the 15 years combined and I’ve got myself a partner for life.
It’s not all easy—but sometimes that’s the point. Alicia practices the violin every day, and although she enjoys it, even 15 minutes of practice can upset her. The trick, I’ve found, is to let her watch me try to get better at something, too. I start taking piano lessons at 41 years old with the idea that if she sees me struggling as I practice and then improve, she’ll understand that things don’t come easy, even for grown-ups. I know there’s going to be a time when I’ll end up on the sideline cheering her on as she finds her own passions. I’m okay with this, and I’m hoping that by then she’ll carry the joy of practice and knowledge through life.
    28. What does the father imply by saying “I’ve got myself a partner for life.”?
    A. It is rewarding to learn new skills.
    B. Skiing has become his lifelong hobby.
    C. He will explore more with his daughter.
    D. His daughter will accompany him forever.
29 Why does the father start learning to play the piano?
    A. To prove it is never too old to learn.
    B. To set a good example for his daughter.
    C. To experience the joy of piano practice.
    D. To share with his daughter musical knowledge.
    30. Which of the following can best describe the father?
    A. Rigid and humorous. B. Cautious and inspiring.
    C. Creative and thoughtful. D. Ambitious and patient.
    31. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. The Thrill of the Skill B. Practice Makes Perfect
    C. Like Father, Like Daughter D. The Power of Knowledge
    D
About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn't help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked: “So, how have you been?" And the boy, who could not have been more than seven or eight years old, replied, "To tell the truth, I've been feeling a little depressed
    lately."
His words stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and l didn't find out we were "depressed" until we were in high school.
The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don't seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.
Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why?
Human development is based not only on innate ( 天 生 的 ) biological states, but also on
patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involved learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adults secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation machine has come into 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.
Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practiced. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.
    32. Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world .
    A. through contact directly with society
    B. gradually and under adults' guidance
    C. naturally and by biological instinct
    D. through exposure to social information
    33. The phenomenon that today's children seem adult-like is explained by the author as the result of .
    A. the widespread influence of television
    B. the poor arrangement of TV programs
    C. the fast development of human's intelligence
    D. the constantly rising of standard of living
    34. Why is the author in favor of communication through print for children?
    A. It enables children to gain more social information.
    B. It develops children's interest in reading and writing.
    C. It helps children to remember and practice more knowledge.
    D. It can control what children are to learn at a proper age.
    35. What does the author think of the change in today's children?
    A. He feels amused by their behaviors and thoughts.
    B. He thinks it is a phenomenon worthy of note.
    C. He considers it a positive and good development.
    D. He seems to be upset about these strange behaviors.

The unconditional love of a dog for anyone who shows it even a little kindness has earned it the name of “Man's Best Friend”. Often, it's a dog's tale of loyalty that teaches us humans the meaning of the word. So many stories tell us about dogs that traveled great distances to be reunited with their owners. 36 Here are some tips that can help you.
Learn to communicate with your dog. 37 For example, learn to read its body language and behavior, and understand its likes and dislikes. This will help you communicate with your dog well.
38 This means that you should stay with your dog more often and do things it enjoys. In this way, you'll get to know it better and improve your communication.
Go to your dog's heart through its stomach. Remember the dog doesn't know the monetary (钱的) value of food, so putting a little effort and smell into the food can make your dog happier.
39 Your dog's depending on you for food will help you to draw its attention at all times.
Always remain calm with your dog. 40 Thus, keep calm and don't punish your dog when it disappoints you. Reward your dog for its good behavior. This will make it repeat that more often.
    A. Spend some time every day with your dog.
    B. Try to learn as much as possible about your dog.
    C. If your dog sees signs of anger, it may get angry too.
    D. Hand feeding your dog, at times, can also go a long way.
    E. If you build a good relationship with your dog, you'll have a friend for life.
    F. While telling a dog not to do something, suggest what it is supposed to do.
    G. Both you and your dog need to try your best to make the relationship grow.

    Possible version:
    Dear Peter,
I’m more than delighted to hear from you. Learning that you are concerned about our online learning during the epidemic in September, I’d like to share with you some related information.
We took online courses under teachers’ guidance. The subjects we learnt included Chinese, Maths, English and so on. Each class was scheduled to last 40 minutes, with a 10-minute break between classes for self-relaxation. Learning at home was challenging, which required self-discipline and concentration. Gradually, I adapted to such a unique way of learning and became an independent learner.
However, I’m still fond of studying on campus, where I can have face-to-face talks with others. I firmly believe we can bring the epidemic under control and everything will be better.
    Best wishes!

M: Where's that part we ordered? The suppliers promised it would come today. W: They've got problems. Two trucks have broken down.
M: Ask them to put it on the next train.
W: I did, but a delivery man has set off with it on a motorbike.

    Text 2
M: Hi, Julie. I'm ringing to remind you that I'll pick you up tonight. W: Thank you. When will you come?
M: The film doesn't start until 8:15. I'll leave here at 7:20. It'll take 20 minutes to get to your house.

    Text 3
M: I was expecting another hot day.
W: But it is cooled off because of the wind.

    Text 4
M: Excuse me. Two classmates and I had lunch here and I think I may have left my history textbook here. I hope you have got it.
    W: Yeah. Here it is.

    Text 5
M: The grassland near your house is beautiful.
W: Yeah, and it's useful. It cuts down on the need for air-conditioning.

    Text 6
W: Good morning. Can I help you?
M: Hello. Margaret. This is Dave. ⑥ )I'm at the airport and I want to check the flights of the passengers I'm meeting.
W: Oh. OK, Dave. Go ahead.
M: Right. The Spanish flight arrives at 4:50 and flight 1550 from France arrives at 6:00. ⑦The 6:50 one from Italy has been delayed. Is that all of them?
    W: Yeah, that's all.

    Text 7
    M: Honey, I'm back.
W: How did you get along with your work today, dear?
M: I'm not the least tired and I'm really happy with my work for I successfully dealt with some difficult matters.
⑧I enjoy the sense of achievement in it so much. W: Tell me about it.
M: In the morning, I managed to settle a deal with a foreign company. ⑨And in the afternoon, I successfully handled a complaint from one of my key customers.

    Text 8
W: ⑩The weekend is almost here. Let's do something together. M: You're right. How about going camping?
W: It's a bit cold for camping, don't you think? M: ⑪Alright, let's go hiking instead.
W: Hmm. ⑪I don't have energy to do that. Every time I go back from hiking, I need several days to have a rest. How about going to the museum?
M: Well, it doesn't sound very exciting, but I'll go. Then afterwards, let's go out for dinner.
W: Why don't we eat at home instead? I went shopping this morning and there's a lot of food in the fridge. M: Sounds good. Well, how about going to see a movie in the cinema after dinner?
W: Great. ⑫Now let's try and decide what movie to watch.
    Text 9
W: Well, ⑬I'm really worried about how I'm going to deal with university life. Maybe if I knew the university a bit better, that might help.
M: Do you have a map of the university? W: Yes.
M: Well, let's look at it together. OK, we are here now in Dalton House. Opposite this building is the Arts Block where you will find the computers. ⑭The computer rooms are open from 9:00 a.m. till 8:00 p.m. weekdays.
    W: Fine.
M: Another important building is the students' union. To get to the students' union you keep going down University Lane, past the Science Block on your left. Opposite the Science Block are the chemistry labs and
⑮the students' union is just on the right, next to Lab B. W: Fine. But I get a bit confused about the directions.
M: ⑯Probably the best thing to do is to walk around and familiarize yourself with everything. Now I need you to fill in this form. Take it away with you and then make an appointment to see me again and we'll go over it. My telephone number is on the form. You can ring me anytime, except on Thursday.

    Text 10
W: ⑰If you want to eat out this weekend and you're not sure where to go, try the new Rooftop Restaurant. It's just outside town in Hapston Village. You'll find it at the end of Market Street, which is right next to the river.
⑱I was very lucky to be invited to last Tuesday's pre-opening private dinner, but it opens to the public on 18th October - that's this Friday. The food is European, combining English, French and Italian styles, and I had an excellent three-course meal, chosen from the menu. I went in the evening, but I'll probably try lunchtime next time. The restaurant is open every day for lunch. ⑲It opens at noon and closes again at three. There's a fixed two-course menu--if you want dessert, you pay a bit more. On Sundays, you can have a traditional Sunday lunch for the same price. The evening meals begin at seven and the last meal can be ordered at ten. The average three-course meal, such as the one I had, is very reasonable, and until the end of October, the price includes a drink. You should book two or three days before, as I have a feeling this restaurant is going to be very popular!
⑳The restaurant is happy to take group bookings for specific celebrations if they are booked two weeks before. It's not a large restaurant, so the largest number they'll take in a group is twenty.
