Four Books Worth Reading
The Humane Home by Sarah Lozanova
The book contains seven chapters that cover topics like energy efficiency, water conservation, passive solar heat, air quality and choosing where to live, etc. It contains numerous little projects, from building garden beds to preserving home-grown produce. The book is a quick and easy read, easily finished in an hour or two.
An Almost Zero Waste Life by Megean Weldon
The book offers suggestions for reducing waste in every area of life, from grocery shopping, to beauty routines and clothing. In urging people to choose bamboo toothbrushes and package-free goods, Weldon never mentions a single company in his book. This may be strategic. Companies come and go, and such references could potentially make the book feel out-of-date.
The Eco Hero Handbook by Tessa Wardley
The book addresses the issue of eco-anxiety by dedicating a one-page answer to a commonly-asked question and, hopefully, enabling the readers to feel like they can take acton. The questions range from “Is my water usage affecting the planet and nature?” to “Which foods are responsible for the worst deforestation(滥伐森林)?” The answers are the same length, regardless of the complexity of the question.
Sustainable Home by Christine Liu
This beautiful book could sit on your coffee table, with its gorgeous(非常漂亮的) minimalist photography. Author Christine Liu is a sustainability blogger whose own home and DIY projects are featured in the book. She goes through all the steps you can take to avoid waste, reduce clutter(杂乱) and adopt more eco-friendly practices. Her advice is helpful to anyone who feels frightened by the climate crisis.
21. Who would be the most interested in the four books?
A. People loving science and technology. B. People desiring an eco-friendly lifestyle.
C. People caring about endangered species. D. People focusing on research about nature.
22. Whose book enables you to quickly get easy steps for green living?
A. Sarah Lozanova. B. Megean Weldon. C. Tessa Wardley. D. Christine Liu.
23. What is special about The Eco Hero Handbook?
A. It gives readers much advice. B. It makes readers take some actions.
C. It makes its answers the same length. D. It shows some environmental problems.

Haley Moss knows that for our legal system to function the way it should, it needs to look like the people it represents—including people with disabilities. “We need all types of minds to get all kinds of jobs done,” she says. Moss represents that concept in more ways than one: Not only is she Florida’s first openly autistic(自闭症) lawyer, but she is also a public speaker and consultant on disability at work.
Moss initially thought she would be a doctor—“I thought the coolest thing would be becoming an autistic expert,” she says—but soon realized she wasn’t enthusiastic about the science. She decided to focus on what she enjoys: helping people, making a difference, writing, and speaking—all things lawyers do. After her undergraduate work at the University of Florida, she graduated from the University of Miami School of Law. From there, she worked mostly in antiterrorism litigation(反恐怖主义诉讼) at a firm in Florida before starting her own public speaking and consulting business.
Moss is hoping to change the fact that not many lawyers are open about their disabilities. “I remember in my first year of law school, there was a blind student in my section, but she did not return for the second semester—and I wondered why,” she says. “Law school is not always as accessible as it could be for people with disabilities. However, if more people with disabilities go to law school and begin working in our communities, they’ll be able to create the change we need.” Moss now plays a role in inspiring others to discover the benefits of a legal education as part of LSAC’s BE IndiVISIBLE campaign, which encourages all people from all walks of life to consider law school.
For any law student or lawyer with disability, Moss recommends “showing up as your full self”—in other words, not hiding your disability or acting like someone you’re not. “Don’t try to be the same as your normal or nondisabled counterparts(同行),” she says. “But remember, if you do choose to divulge your disability, make it clear that it’s not everything you are.”
24. How does Moss differ from other lawyers?
A. She only defends for the disabled.
B. She is a lawyer with many new concepts.
C. She is the first openly autistic lawyer in Florida.
D. She is devoted to changing the present legal system.
25. What can we infer about Moss from paragraph 2?
A. She got a doctor degree at first.
B. She enjoyed science at university.
C. She selected the most popular major at university.
D. She got a job in the legal profession after graduation.
26. What happened to the blind student?
A. She might quit school. B. She launched many campaigns
C. She often inspired her classmates. D. She was devoted to her community.
27. What can best replace the underlined word “divulge” in the last paragraph?
A. treat B. expose C. ignore D. excuse

A new study found that children aged 3 to 5 who consumed more ultra-processed(超加工) foods had poorer skills at doing sports than children who consumed less of these foods. It also showed lower cardiovascular(心血管) fitness in 12- to 15-year-olds who consumed more ultra-processed foods.
Although previous research has shown that consuming ultra-processed foods is linked with a higher risk for cardiovascular disease in adults, this is one of the first studies to show a link between consumption of these foods and lower levels of physical fitness in children.
Ultra-processed. foods were classified in this study as including packaged snacks, breakfast cereals, candies, soda, sweetened juices and yogurts, canned soups and prepared foods like pizza, hotdogs, burgers and chicken nuggets.
“Healthy dietary and exercise behaviors are established at a very young age,” said research team leader Jacqueline Vernarelli, PhD, associate professor and director for the Master of Public Health program at Sacred Heart University. “Our findings point to the need to educate families about cost-effective ways to reduce ultra-processed food intake to help decrease the risk for cardiovascular health problems in adulthood.”
“Though highly processed convenience foods are easy to throw into a school bag our re-search shows the importance of preparing healthy snacks and meals,” said Vernarelli. “Think of it like saving for retirement; You’re making decisions now that will influence your child’s future.”
As a next step, the researchers plan to look more closely at consumption patterns for ultra-processed food by age group. For example, do kids eat more of these foods for breakfast, at lunch or for snacks? A better understanding of how and when these foods are consumed could help inform future strategy designed to encourage healthy eating.
28. What does the study show?
A. 3- to 5-year-olds have poorer skills at doing sports.
B. Ultra-processed foods do harm to children’s health.
C. 12- to 15-year-olds have lower cardiovascular fitness.
D. Children aged 3 to 5 consume more ultra-processed foods.
29. What should parents do about ultra-processed foods?
A. Get rid of them thoroughly. B. Let children save for them.
C. Know how to take in less of them. D. Educate children about their development.
30. What is Vernarelli’s attitude towards ultra-processed foods?
A. Ignorant. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Concerned.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The popularity of ultra-processed foods. B. The effect ultra-processed foods on children.
C. The decision influencing your child’s fitness. D. The reason of ultra-processed foods being harm.

It has made successful attempts to combine jingju with local opera forms such as ballet when organizing performances abroad. “Innovation can help traditional arts go further. We are happy to see many young faces, and some of them even come twice to experience the ‘new’ art,” she added.

A little kindness goes a long way. It is incredible how one simple act can completely turn a person’s day around. These simple, precious moments are what makes life so special.
Julie Bick is. a single mother of two lovely children, aged 8 and 10, and she thinks her family is her world. She absolutely adored her mom and dad growing up, and she kept a good relationship with them as an adult—although the stresses of life sometimes got in the way of them spending time together.
Unfortunately, Julie’s mom passed away unexpectedly. She wasn’t able to make the memories she would have hoped to, and it bothered her deeply. She was determined not to make the same mistake twice.
Then in 2017, just one year after her mom died, Julie’s dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease(老年痴呆). The worried daughter was totally overwhelmed(不堪重负的), but she remembered the promise she had made to herself after losing her mother. This news served as a reason for spending more quality time with her dad.
Julie decided that the best thing to do was stick together. She and her children, Carlee and Brantlee, moved in with her dad. They wanted to give him the best life, so they became his caretakers. This seemed to cheer her dad up, which was all too essential at such a critical point in his life.
This new living situation was not without difficulties, but it was worth it to Julie to be there for her father. Still, the woman was struggling a lot: She was a mother, a caretaker, a breadwinner, and an individual. It could be hard to balance it all.
Sometimes Julie felt overwhelmed by the situation life had thrown at her, but she always tried to manage it. She never wanted to show her worries to her dad, because she didn’t want to cause him stress. When she cried, she would wipe away her tears before he could see them. But Julie and her dad were close, and he knew that something was troubling her.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Fortunately, Harold, a garbage man, comforted the dad and daughter with his kindness.
It meant so much to Julie that this man would take time out of his day to help her.

M:Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W:Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M:Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. W:Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.

参考范文:
Fortunately, Harold, a garbage man, comforted the dad and daughter with his kindness. Harold was an extremely nice man who had good relationships with everyone in the neighborhood. He was known all around the block for his friendliness. Every Monday he would visit with the garbage truck. One Monday, when Julie just spent a rough night and swept her tears, her father approached her and said, “Don’t worry, Julie. Harold is my friend. He would like a day with me tomorrow so that you can free yourself for a moment.”
It meant so much to Julie that this man would take time out of his day to help her. His kind heart left her with a restored faith in humanity. She knew no matter what disease her father had, it would never take away his love for her. Although Harold had picked up their garbage for many years, he truly didn’t know well about her. But when he knew that the father had Alzheimer’s disease, he would take time to look after them. There was so much good in this world, and it started with simple acts of kindness.
