One night, as I was driving down the road, I found something was sitting in the middle of the road. A few seconds later, I realized I was looking at a large turtle (海龟). Afraid of it being crashed by cars, so I pulled over, ran across the road and dragged the turtle to safety. But I’d made one big mistake.
I had heard that the best way to pick up a turtle without hurting it was picking it by the tail in order not to get bitten. So I’d made that big mistake. While the turtle turned out OK generally, I was determined to figure out how to move a turtle properly. I needed to find someone who dealt with turtles. I found the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. I talked to Dr. Sue, its Executive and Medical Director.
Dr. Sue told me that the organization dealt with a number of aspects of turtle conservation, including rescue, settlement, birth programs, research, and education. Sue explained that southern Ontario is home to a vast majority of turtles in Canada, but is also one of the vastest road networks of the country.
“Ninety percent of injured turtles brought in are caused by cars. These turtles spend a lot of time on land. And they do travel many kilometers on land for a variety of reasons, to find a nesting spot, or to hang out for the summer or winter. Turtles know where they want to go. So, just keep them going in the direction they want to go and you may have saved a turtle’s life,” Dr. Sue said.
Once an injured turtle arrives at the center, there are medical facilities (设备) ready to go, including an X-ray machine. That’s when the team gets to work with healing injuries, and help their patient.

    24. Why did the author stop the car?
    A. To help the turtle.
    B. To see the thing clearly.
    C. To prevent a car accident.
    D. To find something good.
    25. What happened to the turtle?
    A. It got hurt by people previously.
    B. It was injured a little bit.
    C. It was run over by a car.
    D. It lost its direction.
    26. What did Dr. Sue suggest at last?
    A. Leaving the turtles alone.
    B. Making Ontario home to turtles.
    C. Changing the road conditions.
    D. Helping turtles find nesting spots.
    27. What does the underlined word “patient” refer to in the last paragraph?
    A. The director. B. The driver.
    C. The author. D. The turtle.
    C
Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.
The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.

    28. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2?
    A. Your weight changes little during a day.
    B. Your scale mass is affected by many factors.
    C. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.
    D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.
    29. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months?
    A. You will weigh more.
    B. Your muscle mass will decrease.
    C. Your body fat will increase.
    D. Your body composition will change.
    30. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body?
    A. 30 pounds. B. 60 pounds.
    C. 100 pounds. D. 140 pounds.
    31. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
    A. Why Do We Gain Weight?
    B. How to Work Out Effectively?
    C. What Is the Composition of Our Body?
    D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain?
    D
For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use—getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.

    32. How did the researchers reach their conclusion?
    A. By analyzing a mass of data.
    B. By conducting genetic research.
    C. By comparing various levels of activity.
    D. By tracking the subjects for many years.
    33. What does the study show about depression?
    A. Physical activity betters medical treatment.
    B. Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.
    C. Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
    D. Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
    34. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Harmful. B. Complex.
    C. Unusual. D. Common.
    35. What is the purpose of the text?
    A. To discuss a disease.
    B. To introduce a method.
    C. To analyze a genetic risk.
    D. To explain a phenomenon.
Ask most people which day of the week they fear the most and the answer is likely to be Monday. The first day of the working week can make us depressed. 36
The most depressing day of the year is the third Monday in January, when it’s cold and dark outside. This day was named “Blue Monday” by psychologist Cliff Arnall. Even if there was little science behind Blue Monday, it’s probably true that the sound of our alarm clock on any Monday morning means the coming of a new working week and possibly the end of our weekend of fun.
37 It’s what psychologists call an emotional shift, and no other part of the week has a transition (过渡) like it.
Apparently, Monday means the end of weekend lie-ins. 38 According to a website, “If you can’t stand your job, then the Monday blues can be very real.” And it can be especially difficult to start another seemingly endless workweek. Your case of the Mondays can have a negative impact on your performance, productivity and the people around you.
39 Feeling a bit low shouldn’t be confused with more serious depression, caused by other factors. Claudia Hammond, an author and presenter, argues that this low feeling might be untrue. 40 She mentions an Australian study of how people reflected on their mood and found the day that scored the lowest was in fact Wednesdays. So, when Monday comes, maybe we should give it a second chance!

    A. But is Monday as bad as we like to think it is?
    B. What exactly makes us feel down remains unknown.
    C. Weekends are definitely happy days in all countries.
    D. That’s why the feeling is described as the Monday blues.
    E. There is a strong cultural idea that we don’t like Mondays.
    F. Our Monday mood can be based on a direct comparison to the day before.
    G. It’s back to the routine and the realization that there are five days of working ahead.

Mary Lee seemed to have everything. She was very beautiful with a wonderful figure and an attractive face. She was very rich. Her clothes were better than anyone else’s and she had more of them. Her books were always new and expensive as were her pens, school bags and bicycle. She was very clever too and without appearing to do very much work. She was always the first in all the examinations and always answered all the questions, while the rest of the class were still thinking.
With all this, or really because of all this, no one liked Mary Lee. She was too good, too clever and she was also very proud. No one was quite good enough to talk to her or to be seen with her or to be her friend. And so, with all her proud ways and riches and brains, she was lonely but she did not care because she was always the best in everything. She was like a princess in the class. She always thought that the other students kept their distance from her because she was too excellent. “Lions and tigers are always lonely, and only the weak get together,” she told herself.
As the end of term drew near, the pupils including Mary Lee began to think about the most important prize of all. This was the prize, offered by the principal, for the best essay to be written on one of two subjects: Happiness and Friendship. All the teachers and pupils paid close attention to the prize, for it was really a great honor. “I needn’t worry about that,” thought Mary Lee, as the others began to read and to think about the essay. “I shall easily win. After all, my compositions are always better than the other students’.”
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

“Pride goes before a fall,” they say and it certainly did in the case of poor Mary Lee.

Mary Lee suddenly realized that how silly she had been.

根据倒数第二段第三句中的“Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight”可知,人体的含水量约占人体体重的65%到90%。

根据第二段中的“For the study, researchers collected information... over the next two years after examining them”可知,研究者们收集和研究了近8000人的信息,由此可推知,他们是通过分析大量资料来得出结论的。故选A。
根据第三段内容,尤其是“On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity...protect against future depression episodes”可知,该研究表明体育锻炼可以帮助人们降低患抑郁症的风险并防止未来抑郁症的发作。故选B。
通读全文,尤其是第一段的“For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use — getting more exercise”可知,全文主要讲的是锻炼有助于减少和预防抑郁症的发生。

故选A。

    My English Learning Experience
I’ve learned English for years and have made great progress in it. But the process used to be painful for me.
When I was in primary school, I found it difficult to pronounce new words properly, let alone remembering them. With my teacher’s help, I began to set small, achievable goals and practiced more. Listening to English songs and watching English movies also helped excite my interest and increase my confidence. Now I’m no longer afraid of learning English and have become a passionate English learner who can communicate with foreigners fluently.
In my point of view, the secret to learning English lies in hard work and strong belief in yourself. So be confident and try your best. I’m sure you can make it too!

    Paragraph 1:
“Pride goes before a fall,” they say and it certainly did in the case of poor Mary Lee. Happiness and Friendship were the two subjects for the essay but Mary Lee knew little about either of them. As she scratched her head for ideas and wrote something aimlessly with her pen, she realized that she didn’t have any friends to speak of and that she was very far from being happy. She had no idea, so she did not win the prize. Tears came into her eyes when she knew she was a loser this time.
    Paragraph 2:
Mary Lee suddenly realized that how silly she had been. She felt so silly because all her money and her cleverness seemed nothing compared with not winning the prize. “I mustn’t be too proud or too sure,” she thought. “The fall is too hard for me, because I have been too proud all the time.” So she decided to make a change. She became a very pleasant person after that and her fellow pupils became her friends. She still won many prizes, but she never forgot the valuable lesson that the one prize she lost had taught her.
    Text 1
W: Excuse me. How do I get to Joe’s Garage?
M: Oh, just keep going straight for 2 miles, then turn left. Walk until you see the big green sign, and then turn right. You should see it there.
    Text 2
W: I think you should concern yourself less with war and terrible things in the world, and concern yourself more with things you can control, like your studies.
M: What? How can I possibly study when so many people are dying in the world?
    Text 3
W: My teacher gets angry every time I don’t agree with her. This is ridiculous! She should encourage independent thought!
M: I don’t think she’d get angry if you were a little more respectful when you disagreed. Try that next time.
    Text 4
W: Before we decide on whether to hire the guard, I think we should talk to 5 or 6 people who know him, maybe even a family member or 2.
M: Sounds reasonable. But I’ve already spoken to 3 former employers of his, and he checks out well so far.
    Text 5
W: When was the last time that you heard a child use the words ma’am and sir? Honestly, I think civility (文明举止;礼貌) is fading from society.
M: Come on! Isn’t there anything more important to worry about?
    Text 6
W: Hey, will you get home tonight in time to watch That’s Incredible?
M: I hope so. That’s my favorite program.
W: I’ll be watching it too. Well, if your meeting goes too late, give me a call and I’ll record it.
M: Thanks. I may do that. I might have to miss it tonight because my boss decides on our business trip to Shanghai tomorrow. Then I’ll have to stay late to get ready.
W: Oh, I hate traveling like that.
    M: It’s not that bad.
    Text 7
W: Are you involved in any extra-curricular (课外的) activities on campus?
M: I have no time for extra-curricular activities. What did you do when you were in college?
W: I was in the school band. I was a member of the debate team, and I worked on the school magazine.
M: Wow. You certainly kept busy. How did you find so much free time?
W: Well, my major was literature, so I found activities that tied in with (与……关联) my courses. I also got involved in sports, and my spare time was all used up.
M: I guess so. Say, the drama club will put on a play tonight. Are you interested?
W: Sounds interesting. I haven’t been to one for a while.
    Text 8
W: Hey, John. Can you do me a favor?
M: Sure, I’d be happy to. What’s wrong?
W: Well, I’ve been having a lot of trouble with my computer lately. I’m not very good at computers, so I don’t really know what to do.
M: I see. What is going wrong?
W: It keeps shutting down whenever I open up a certain program.
M: Uh-oh. That doesn’t sound very good. You might have a virus (病毒). Have you had your computer checked for viruses?
W: Viruses? No, I haven’t. Would you mind checking my computer for viruses?
M: Sure, I have a program on a disk that will help. Why don’t I go home and get it, then we can meet up and try using it on your computer?
W: That sounds great. I really appreciate your help! Now, I am going home waiting for you.
    Text 9
M: Oh, it takes forever to line up here.
W: Well, this is her last piano concert, and nobody wants to miss it. We’re lucky if there’re still tickets left.
M: Say, do I know you from somewhere? You look so familiar.
    W: I don’t think so.
M: Oh, yes. Were you also in Professor Robertson’s class back in 1992?
W: Wait a minute. You are Chris. Chris Debrain.
M: You are Sarah, Sarah Elmore.
W: What a nice surprise! How have you been all these years?
M: Well, I’m still in the computer business. I’ve just set up my own company.
W: How wonderful! You haven’t changed a bit. Still Debrain, the smartest in the class.
M: Then, how’s everything with you? I heard you married Antony, the footballer and moved to Chicago.
W: Yes, but we are separated now. Only this year, I have got a job offer in Seattle to teach computer science. So here I am. Did you also move from Los Angeles to here? Is your family with you?
M: Yes, we moved here last year. Susan is working in a hospital. Oh, here she comes. Susan, I’d like you to meet my friend Sarah…
    Text 10
M: Good afternoon. Now, I’ll tell you our swim classes at the Community Pool. Classes begin on Monday, May 1st, and will continue throughout the summer. Fifteen swim classes are being offered. Each class lasts ten hours. A new class starts each week of the summer. Each class costs $20. The pool is big enough for six students per class. Classes will increase in difficulty each week. Students can sign up for as many classes as they like, but they must pass the skill level test. For example, students who sign up for Level 4 must show their certificate for completing Level 3. Children cannot sign up for a level they are not ready for. Children who have never attended Community Pool classes must show up on April 29th or 30th for a swim skill show. Instructors will rate the students and assign them to a particular skill level.
