    I. Teaching aims and learning objectives

    By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

    1. talk about the two citiesBeijing and Guilin;

    2. use the new words and expressions correctly;

    3. describe their own home town or a familiar city.

     

    II. Teaching contents

    1. New words and phrases: middle, emperor, landscape, attraction, watchtower, shape,

    underground, cave, hang, point, upwards, hire, turn into, be well worth a visit, watch the raising of the national flag, one of the wonders of the world, lie on the two sides of, be praised as

    2. New structures: In the middle of the ancient city of Beijing is the Palace Museum.

    It is also popular to hire a bicycle and ride around the countryside.

     

    III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty

    1. To understand the new words and phrases correctly.

    2. To use the new words and phrases to describe a place.

     

    IV. Teaching procedures

    Step 1 Lead-in

    T: There are many tourist attractions in Beijing. Among them, four places are especially famousa museum, a park, a square, and a wall. Do you know them?

    S: Yes. They are the Palace Museum, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall.

    T: Good. Can you say something about them? You can choose one place and introduce it to us.

    T: In the southern part of China, there is also a beautiful place. It is famous for a river and a cave. There is a saying about it: East or west, Guilin landscape is best. Now Ill give you some pictures about Guilin. Describe them in your own words or with the sentences from the passage. Give me the answers as quickly as possible.

    Step 2 Language points

    Present and practice the important words and expressions mentioned above.

    1. It was turned into a museum in 1925.

    T: Look at this picture. It is a small village. Do you know what it is like now? In fact, the small town is Shenzhen. Make a sentence please.

    S: Shenzhen has been turned into a modern city.

    (Show the cover of the book Red sorghum and the poster of its TV series.)

    T: You know this novel? Yes, its written by Mo Yan. And recently you can watch it on TV. So we can say

    S: The novel Red Sorghum was turned into a TV series.
    T: Great. There are another two pictures. Try to finish the sentence.

    S: Water turns into ice when it is cold enough.

    2. it is well worth a visit.

    T: As we all know, the Palace Museum is well worth a visit. We can also say it is well worth visiting. Nowadays, a film called Lost and Love is very popular. I think the film is well worth watching. Listen to the theme song. What do you think of it?

    S: It sounds beautiful. And it is well worth listening to.

    3. Many tourists like to gather there early in the morning to watch the raising of the national flag.

    T: Several years ago, the raising of the price of the flats made lots of people worried. Recently, the price has fallen down instead of rising in many cities.

    T: Finish the sentences according to the picture.

    S: If you can answer my question, please raise your hand.

        Sorry, I cant hear you clearly. Can you raise your voice?

        The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

     T: Look at the picture of the five-ring flag. Complete the sentence.

     S: The Olympics take place every four years.

     T: Yes, and since 2008, Water Cube has been famous. Every day, many tourists go there by bus. Listen and finish the sentence.

    A: Excuse me. Does Bus No.5 go to Water Cube?

      B: Yes.

      A: When will the next bus come?

      B: In five minutes. The last one left five minutes ago.

      S: The bus to Water Cube comes every 10 minutes.

    5. It is one of the wonders of the world.

    T: The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. There are many wonderful places in the world. They are all the wonders of the world. I wonder how the people in ancient times could build them without modern machines.

    T: Do you know a book called A brief history of time? Who wrote it?

    S: Yes. Hawking did. Hawking is a wonder in the scientific field. He has so many wonderful ideas. I wonder how he could overcome so many difficulties.

    6. It lies on the two sides of the Lijiang River.

    T: Guilin lies on the two sides of the Lijiang River. Tell me where these places are.

    S: China lies in the east of the world.

        Shanghai lies on the two sides of the Huangpu River.

        My home town __________________.

    T: Look at the picture. Do you remember this cartoon character?

    S: Yes. He always tells lies.

    T: Try to fill in the blanks.

    S: Oh, my nose? What happened?

    You must have told a lie. I have told you not to lie again many times.

    7. All around the city, mountains stand in different shapes.

    T: Along the Lijiang River, you can see mountains in different unusual shapes. Some look like animals, some look like people. How about these trees?

    S: The trees are in ____________.

    T: Who makes the trees so unusual?

    S: Maybe gardeners.

    T: Its the nature that shapes them.

    8. The cave is praised as the Art Palace of Nature.

    T: People call the Reed Flute Cave the Art Palace of Nature. Do you know how people call the following cities? Try to match them. Then make sentences.

    Hongkong                   Venice in the East

     Suzhou                      Pearl of the Orient

    Haerbin                     the Sun City

     Lasa                        the Ice City

    Step 3 Other words and phrases

    T: Read the two passages again, and find out other new words and phrases that you dont understand.

    T: Lets do a memory test to see if you have remembered all the phrases.

    Step 4 Practice

    T: You have done a good job. Now Ill show you around another cityNantong. It is famous for a hill, a river and a person. Ill introduce it to you.

    T: Work in groups of four. Try to rewrite the passage using the phrases we have learned today

     

    Step 5 Production

    T: Now, its your turn to be a guide. Introduce your home town or one of your familiar cities to us. Try to use the new words and phrases.
