Reading (I)
I. Teaching aims and learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. use different reading skills;
2. describe some famous places in New York;
3. grasp the main idea of the article.
II. Teaching contents
1. New words and phrases: guide, icon, click, Asia, Africa, Europe, America, world-famous,
trade, southern, international, gather, huge, darkness, island, lawn,
several, relax, hard, musical, bottom, pick, play, website, so much for sth, at the top/bottom of the page, since the early twentieth century
2. New structures: Wall Street, the world-famous trade centre, is here at the southern end of Manhattan Island.
Further on is Times Square. Every year, thousands of people gather here on New Year’s Eve.
It’s exciting to see the huge glass ball falling through the darkness!
With several lakes, hills and a large green lawn, it’s a good place to relax after a hard day’s work.
It has been famous for its theatres since the early twentieth century.
III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty
1. Use skimming or scanning to get the main idea or specific information.
2. Find out the indicating words while scanning.
3. Know the structure of the article.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
T: As we can see, there are many different places of interest in the world. Would you like to visit these interesting places? Do you think it is possible for us to travel around them within several hours?

Step 2 Pre-reading
1. Brainstorming
(1) What do you think of these places of interest?
(2) Have you ever travelled abroad?
2. Around the World in Eight Hours
T: Perhaps you have no enough time or money. Today, let’s visit some interesting places with the help of the website’s guide. In this article Around the World in Eight Hours, you will know how to visit different places in only eight hours.

Step 3 While-reading
1. Task 1: Fast-reading
T: When doing fast reading, you are not required to get every detail in the passage. You should scan and skim for the information needed.
(1) Skimming and Scanning
Skim: Read the passage quickly in order to find the main point.
快速阅读找出文章的中心思想或主要意思。
T: Skim the passage and find out the main idea.
Scan: Read the passage and find out the particular information.
快速阅读找到某一具体信息。
T: Scan the passage and answer a question: How can you start the online tour?
【设计意图:介绍两种快速阅读技巧,结合一个段落让学生真正掌握技巧。】
(2) More information
T: Read the passage as fast as you can and answer two questions:
What’s the name of the website?
Which city will you visit?
T: Sometimes, we can get information from the title, the pictures and the first sentence of each paragraph.
【设计意图:通过快速阅读,培养学生利用标题、插图、首句等来获得信息的意识。】
(3) Main idea of each part
T: Read the passage again. Then work in groups and talk about the main idea of each part.
【设计意图:通过快速阅读和小组讨论了解文张的结构,增强学生的篇章意识。】
2. Task 2: Careful reading
(1) Part 1
T: Let’s read part one and think over two questions. You can circle some useful words while looking for answers.
What is Robin?
What can you see at the top of the page?
T: We can see the “Tour” icon at the top of the page, and if we click on the icon, we can visit Asia, Africa, Europe, America and more.
(2) Part 2
T: Read the second part of the passage and find out how many places of interest in New York are mentioned and what they are. You can circle some useful words while looking for answers.
T: Let’s learn more about the four places.
Paragraph 3: Read Paragraph 3 and fill in the blanks.
Paragraph 4: Would you like to visit Times Square? What can we do on New Year’s Eve? Listen to Paragraph 4 and tell “T” or “F”.
Paragraph 5: Read Paragraph 5 and then describe Central Park from four aspects.
Paragraph 6: Listen to Paragraph 6 and choose the right answer.
T: Complete Exercise B2: Fill in the blanks about New York.
(3) Part 3
T: So much for New York. Do you want to start your new tour? Read the last part and find out the way.

Step 4 Post-reading
1. Make an interview
T: We have learnt a lot about the website “Around the World in Eight Hours”. Imagine one of your friends wants to learn something about the website and New York. Work in pairs and make an interview. You can use the conversation on the screen as a model.
2. Make a flow chart
T: How are the ideas organized in this passage? Look at the flow chart.
3. Describe the three famous places in New York

V. Homework
1. Read the article after class.
2. Search for more information about New York.
