Kwanzaa (宽扎节) is a celebration of African-American history and culture. It begins on December 26th and runs until New Year’s Day, January 1st.
During the festival, a family member, usually the youngest child, lights candles in a special candle holder. Each night a candle is lit. Traditionally there are three green candles, three red candles and a central black candle. They represent the seven Kwanzaa principles (原则). The principles are believed to play a big role in building strong, successful families, neighborhoods, etc. In the evenings, adults share stories and explain how to follow the seven principles in daily life. On the sixth day, which falls on New Year’s Eve, family and friends get together to enjoy a large meal.
Kyle, a third grader, wrote this about Kwanzaa, “When we celebrate Kwanzaa, we have many people at home, light the candles, and have a nice dinner. We learn the meaning of Kwanzaa and remember family members. We say something good about them. Last year, we remembered my grandmother.”
In 1966, Dr. Karenga created Kwanzaa. He was studying the history of Africa at that time. “A drizzling rain falls like tears on the Mourning Day/The mourner’s heart is going to break on his way”, it is from a poem about Tomb Sweeping Day, also known as the Qingming Festival. It falls on the 4th or 5th of April each year. It’s the traditional Chinese festival to remember the dead. Chinese people all come home to visit the tombs (墓) of their parents, grandparents and ancestors (祖先). They will sweep the tombs and clean away the grass around them. Then they burn paper money and put flowers and fruit in front of the tombs. They hope the dead can enjoy them and bring the family good luck.
However, not only Chinese remember the dead. People in other countries also have festivals for the dead.
In Japan, O-Bon Festival (盂兰盆节) is one of the most important festivals. It is held from August 13 to 16. It is also a holiday that serves as a family reunion(相聚). During O-Bon, Japanese people return to their hometown and visit their ancestors’ spirits return home to be reunited with their family. People perform a “bon odori” dance (盆舞) to welcome the spirits. On the last day of O-Bon, they put paper lanterns in a river to send off the spirits.
In Russia, people remember their ancestors on the Day of Rejoicing (欣喜). It’s usually in late April or early May. The name of this festival means birth and happiness. Russians believe that people shouldn’t feel sad for the dead because death means birth in another world. On the Day of Rejoicing, Russian people draw beautiful pictures on eggs and put them in front of tombs. After that they have a picnic together. They hope for a good life for both the living and the dead.

Carnival (狂欢节) is the most famous holiday in Brazil. It is not about an important time in history or about a famous person, but it is important for the people because it’s a time of friendship, freedom, and almost a whole week without work. People can have parties or have a rest, and most people choose parties, day after day, night after night.
It starts forty days before Easter (复活节). It lasts four days and four nights. It starts on Saturday and finishes on Wednesday. People wear their colourful clothes and go out into the streets or to the clubs. There are also groups of people who make a parade (游行) showing their music and cars. Every year the parade tells a different story. Each city has at least one group like this.
In the south, life returns to normal by Wednesday. However, it is not accepted by the church in the northwest, where Carnival is more common. There people don’t respect its end and continue to have parties until the next Sunday.
I like Carnival, but I don’t agree that the party should keep going on for so many days. Unfortunately, some people aren’t responsible and give it a bad name, and that makes people remember the bad things about this. However, it is the only national holiday that brings together the whole country and its different people and cultures.
    9. Why is Carnival important for the people in Brazil?
    A. Because it’s a time of friendship and freedom.
    B. Because it’s about an important time in history.
    C. Because it’s a time of almost a whole month without work.
    D. Because it’s a time to remember a famous person.

    C. making a parade D. going shopping
    11. In the following descriptions of Carnival, which one is NOT true?

Luosifen became the most popular Chinese New Year’s snack last year on Tmall and Taobao, as Chinese people prepare for a stay-at-home holiday because of the COVID-19 pandemic
On the traditional Laba Festival, Tmall and Taobao started a one-month-long “2022 Online Chinese New Year’s Goods Festival” to help people across the country easily buy some seasonal specials for the coming Spring Festival.
Traditionally, dried fruits, sweets, and pastries (糕点) are must-buy snacks for the Chinese New Year. But this year, Luosifen took their place. According to Tmall and Taobao, on the first day of the online festival, they sold Luosifen 15 times more than last year. The largest group of buyers was the post-90s.
Self-heating hot pot was only second to Luosifen on the most popular goods list by Tmall and Taobao. By Wednesday, nearly 200,000 buyers placed orders for these pots, compared to less than 20,000 last year.
