Could you cook Christmas dinner in an AIR FRYER? Graphic shows they deliver juicy results on a roast chicken... and they are up to three times cheaper than an oven to run.
WHICH APPLIANCE IS BEST FOR COOKING CHICKEN?
    Appliance

    Electric oven
    Pressure cooker
    Air fryer
    Slow cooker
    Halogen oven
    Cooking time

    31p
    40p
    Quality
Meat was a little dry but the skin was crispy and browned
Cooked rather than roasted, skin not crispy
Juicy, flavorsome meat with a crispy brown skin
Well cooked but skin only slightly crispy
Full of flavor with a crispy skin
The Which? testers initially cooked a three-pound (1.4 kg) chicken in all these appliances, including both a halogen and conventional oven.
This bird would be big enough to feed four people, with enough meat left for some Boxing Day sandwiches. They found the pressure cooker was both the cheapest and quickest way of roasting it, taking 32 minutes and costing a tiny 11p – 28p cheaper than the electric oven. But unlike the oven, it fell short on getting achieving one of the highlights of the Christmas roast – the brown, crispy skin.
The air fryer also cooked the chicken's skin nicely but gave perfect, tender meat, all for just 18p and in under an hour. Additionally, if you ditched the oven and used an air fryer for every Sunday roast for the rest of the year, using the gadget would equate to an annual saving of £11.
The testers did note that the chicken cooked in the electric oven was also a little dry, meaning the air fryer came out on top over all other appliances.
The cost savings will soon be lost if you have to cook more than one batch though, so it's still better to use your oven if you're cooking large quantities.
However, the slow cooker received a bonus point for requiring less hands-on attention, and was therefore the most convenient.
    21. Which appliance best suits environmentally-aware people enjoying a crispy chicken?
    A. Pressure cooker. B. Electric oven.
    C. Halogen oven. D. Air fryer.
    22. What is probably the major reason for people to use pressure cooker?
    A. Size. B. Appearance.
    C. Cost. D. Safety.
    23. What is the advantage of using the slow cooker?
    A. It costs least money. B. It needs less attention.
    C. It’s most energy efficient. C. Its appearance is fashionable.

When I was a little girl, growing up in Iowa, my favorite thing to do was read—same as today. So, when I thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up, I figured I’d be a librarian. Our town librarian, Mrs. Tonne, was really important to me becoming me. The library had a two-book limit, but she knew I’d blow through those in just a few days, so she always let me check out a big stack. And when I was in fourth grade, our school librarian, Mrs. Ketelsen, sent some poems I’d written about dinosaurs to Highlights magazine. My first published writing!
At the University of Iowa, majoring in journalism, I quickly learned that I did not want to be a newspaper reporter. I’m shy about interviewing people, which amuses almost everyone who knows me and thinks I’m outgoing. (I am, but only with people I know!) So I was thrilled when I was selected for a summer internship (实习) at Reader’s Digest.
Ten years after that, I came back to RD to work as an editor. I’ve worked at other magazines too, but I’ve spent most of my career here, reading magazines, newspapers, websites, and books for stories we could rewrite; writing articles; even choosing jokes. This issue seems like the perfect one to introduce myself to you all.
“The Tractor War” (page 92) takes me home to the Midwest. “Something to Sneeze At” (page 47) reminds me of all the sneezing I did when I moved to New York City and was suddenly allergic (过敏的) to grasses and trees. “Pet Besties” (page 58) makes me think about my cats, brothers Reggie and Smokey, who are sitting together at the window as I write. I relate to lots of our stories this month, and I hope you do too. Enjoy!
    24. What did Mrs. Tonne and Mrs Ketelsen have in common?
    A. They were inspiring and generous town librarians.
    B. They allowed the author to check out more books.
    C. They were key to the author’s career development.
    D. They published the author’s writing in a magazine.
    25. Why didn’t the author want to be a newspaper reporter?
    A. She is amusing to her colleagues.
    B. She is out-going with her friends.
    C. She is thrilled about her internship.
    D. She is shy about questioning people.
    26. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
    A. How the stories this month relate to the author.
    B. What the author was allergic to in New York.
    C. What the author’s home is like in Midwest.
    D. How close the author’s pets are to her.
    27. What is the text?
    A. A diary entry. B. An editor’s note.
    C. A book review. D. An academic essay.

A study claims that wearable devices could also be used by cows on the farms of the future. Researchers from Southwest Jiaotong University in China have developed a smartwatch that can be used to monitor cows' health, reproductivity and location.
'Monitoring environmental and health information of cattle can help prevent diseases and improve the efficiency of pasture breeding (草场培育) and management,' said Zutao Zhang, co-author of the study. In the study, the team set out to develop a wearable device that could be used to collect vital information on cows. “This information can include oxygen concentration, air temperature, amount of exercise, reproductive cycles, disease, and milk production,” explained Mr Zhang.
The smart devices are worn around the cows' necks and ankles. They contain a unique motion enhancement mechanism (运动增强机制) to strengthen small movements the cows make. Once captured, the kinetic energy (动能) from the cow's movements is stored in a battery and used to power the device. This means the device doesn't need to be charged like a traditional smartwatch.
“There is a large amount of kinetic energy that can be harvested in cattle's daily movements, such as walking, running, and even neck movement,” said co-author Yajia Pan. To put the device to the test, the researchers tested it on human participants. The tests revealed that even a light jog was enough to power temperature measurements on the device.
Beyond cows, the researchers say that the smart device could have a range of application in humans. This includes in sports monitoring, healthcare, smart homes, and wireless sensor networks. “Kinetic energy is everywhere in the environment—leaves falling in the wind, the movement of people and animals—these phenomena all contain a lot of kinetic energy,” said Zhang. “We shouldn't let this energy go to waste.”
    28. Why did the team develop the wearable device?
    A. To monitor cows’ environmental effects.
    B. To gather vital information on cows.
    C. To locate where cows reproduce.
    D. To improve the quality of milk.
    29. How is the device different from other smartwatches?
    A. It can be applied to many human related fields.
    B. It should be worn around the cow’s necks and ankles.
    C. It makes use of the energy from the cow’s movements.
    D. It takes less time to be charged than traditional smartwatches.
    30. What do we know about kinetic energy from the last two paragraphs?
    A. It is easy to harvest. B. It is simple to test.
    C. It is huge in amount. D. It is widely applied.
    31. What is the best title for this passage?
    A. Wearable Devices in the Future Farm
    B. The Kinetic Energy in Natural World
    C. The Quality Meat of the Super Cows
    D. Wide Applications of a New Invention
    D
In 1838, Charles Darwin faced a problem. Nearing his 30th birthday, he was trying to decide whether to marry. To help make his decision, Darwin made a list of the expected pluses and minuses of marrying.
Darwin is struggling with what I call a wild problem — a fork in the road of life where knowing which path is the right one isn't obvious. How should we go ahead then, especially if we want to make a rational decision?
As we will see, the cost-benefit list that Darwin constructed is less helpful. He managed to come up with more minuses than pluses. His list — especially of pluses is the list made by who has never been married and has no access to the upside of the inner life of a married man. With many wild problems, the downside is easily imagined, while the upside is hidden from us. That’s one reason wild problems are so hard to tackle with the standard tools of rationality.
Less than a year later, Darwin married and had seven surviving children. Somehow, he managed to become one of the greatest scientists of all time and forever changed our understanding of who we human beings are. What’s the lesson to be learned from his decision-making process?
Life is more than accumulating pleasure or avoid pain. Humans want purpose. We want meaning. We want to belong to something larger than ourselves. The decisions we make in the face of wild problems don’t lead to good days and bad days. They define us. They determine who we are, who we might aspire to become, who we might come to be.
Learn from Darwin. Spend less time trying to figure out the best path to get to where we want to go and spend more time thinking about where we want to go in the first place.
    32. How did Darwin decide whether to marry at first?
    A. He made a rational decision.
    B. He was struggling with a wild problem.
    C. He constructed a list of costs and benefits.
    D. He came up with more pluses than minuses.
    33. What is the author’s attitude towards the standard tools of rationality?
    A. Critical. B. Impartial. C. Unconcerned. D. Approval.
    34. What does the underlined word “aspire” mean in Paragraph 5?
    A. pretend B. manage C. need D. dream
    35. What can be learned from Darwin’s lesson?
    A. Life has more pleasure than pain.
    B. It is crucial to figure out our purpose.
    C. Life is about good days and bad days.
    D. How to best tackle problems defines us.

5.【原文】W: I’m free today. What would you think of doing something a little unusual?
M: Well… How about going horse riding out in the fields?
W: Good idea. I love the feeling of riding a horse. We also can feed the horses.
    M: That’s right.
6-7.【原文】W: Could you come Wednesday and Saturday afternoons to clean my house, James?
M: Wednesday is no problem, but Saturday is a little tight. Is it possible to change to Sunday?
W: Sunday afternoons are also OK.
M: What kind of housework do I need to do?
W: Mainly clean the floor, wash clothes, clean the bathroom, and etc.
8-9.【原文】W: Hey, could you help me get something from the top shelf, please?
M: Sure, what do you need?
W: I need some paper for the printer. I’m not sure why it’s all the way up there. It’s usually on the bottom shelf.
M: No problem. Here you are.
W: Thanks. Have we met before? I’ve been here for almost three years, and I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before. I’m Betty Applegate, Mr. Wolf’s assistant.
M: Nice to meet you, Ms. Applegate. I’m Miles Chaplin. I just started in the accounting department last week.
10-12.【原文】M: Tina, my shirt is too tight, isn’t it? Some of my friends were laughing at me today.
W: Yes, it is a little tight. Let’s buy you a new one. Oh, look here, dear. This shirt costs only 24 dollars on the Internet; I’ve seen it for 40 in the shops.
M: But don’t you think it looks rather unfashionable?
W: No, I think it will suit you well. I’m going to buy you one.
    M: On the Internet?
W: Yes, then we don’t have to go out. They say it can be delivered in 48 hours.
M: But I don’t think it is safe to share our credit card information with a stranger.
W: That’s not a problem They have a third party safety control.
M: But I can’t try it on before buying.
W: Don’t worry. They have different sizes and colors. I will order your size and your favorite color—brown, right?
M: But what if I am not satisfied with the quality?
W: If we are not satisfied we will return the T-shirt, and they will return our money.
M: OK. Then let’s try shopping on the Internet.
13-16.【原文】M: Hello, Betty. It’s me, Tim. Am I calling at a bad time?
    W: No, not really.
M: I have invited some of my friends to dinner at my house this evening. I thought maybe you’d like to come, too.
W: Well, that sounds good, but I’m afraid I’ve got to do some reading for my English course at home.
M: Today is Friday. You’ve got to relax and enjoy yourself on the weekend.
W: I know. But there is a lot of reading to do. Besides, I really ought to do my washing this evening.
M: Then would you like to come just for a drink later on instead?
W: Actually, I’d like to go to bed early tonight. I’m a bit tired.
M: OK. Have a good rest. I’ll call you again tomorrow.
W: Don’t call me early. I usually sleep until 9:00 on Saturdays.
M: What? That’ll be too late for our Saturday country drive.
W: Did I say I’d go with you for a drive to the country?
M: No, but I have already planned everything.
W: Listen, Tim, I like to plan my own days myself.
17-20.【原文】M: Boys and girls, our school is an international language college. As you see, there are a lot of buildings on campus. The college used to have four departments—English, French, German and Russian. But there is now also a Chinese department. At the moment we’re outside your department, the English department, which is the largest department in the college. There are over 750 students in each grade and we have 350 teachers, including 150 professors. These teachers are from different countries, mainly from the USA and Canada, with a few from England and Australia. You’ll have all your classes here in this building and all the professors from Canada are working here, so you can talk with them in your spare time. Now, let’s walk over to the main library, which is the largest building in the college just next to the English department building. Ah, this is the main library. OK, let’s come to the next building—the dining hall, where you will have your meals every day.
