故填at。

故填when或as。
故填could。
故填that或which。
故填what。

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
Once, Mama had read about geraniums in a magazine -- versatile, pretty, easy to grow - and, she became possessed with a vision of a house flooded with flowers. The notion inspired her into motion. She spent a small fortune on elegant plant stands, imported flowerpots and armies of fully grown geraniums. She could be like that: my mother always had sudden sprints of creativity.
She also asked for my help, and we squatted in the backyard together, arranging roots in their elegant containers. Mama wore long gardening gloves over her manicured hands, and her finger pressed soil into place with fastidiousness and even passion. She had bought me gloves too, but I refused to wear them.
“You’ll get so dirty, Perla.”
“I want to get dirty.”
“Ay, Perla,” she said, shaking her head. She said no more but beamed with irritation. My refusal disturbed the plan for how the geranium days should go, mother and daughter tending flowers and don’t they look picture perfect in their matching gloves? For half an hour she would not talk to me, but then she thawed, so absorbed in her project that she forgot my fault, or perhaps for fear that I might abandon the project altogether.
She needn’t have worried. I didn’t want to leave. It was a rare chance to spend time with my mother. I could scent her perfume and feel breaths without having to find anything to say. We often struggle to communicate with each other, beyond the essential good morning and good night, as though we were strangers or beginners of a language. I wanted to learn my mother’s language, if only to better understand her and to increase the chances of her understanding me. There is so much I longed to tell her as I squatted beside her, but I also feared that, If I started, other matters might leap out that were not meant to be spoken. Better not to risk the opening. Better not to attempt too much speech with my mother.
When all the flowers were ready in their pots, mama spent another day distributing them through the house. There were more flowers than any other house in our Buenos Aires -- so that when you entered, you felt as though you’re swimming through petals.
56. Based on paragraph 1, Perla viewed her mother’s decision to plant the geraniums as _________.
A. creative B. amusing C. unsurprising D. worthwhile
57. In paragraph 5, the underlined word “thawed”, probably means _________.
A. agreed B. complained C. softened D. denied
58. Which of the following statements is TRUE about Perla?
A. She volunteered to assist her mother in repotting the geraniums.
B. She exchanged her opinions on essential matters with her mother.
C. She was eager to learn a foreign language to better understand her mother.
D. She wanted to stay with her mother even without verbal communication.
59. The author wrote this passage in order to _________.
A. apologize for her misconduct in her childhood
B. praise her mother for her gardening skills
C. provide useful information for geraniums lovers
D. express her mixed emotions towards her mother
C 57. C 58. D 59. D

FOUR BOOKS YOU SHOULD READ
Caroline Leavitt
Cruel Beautiful World
At age 16 Lucy is a lonely orphan living with older sister Charlotte and devoted aunt Iris in Waltham, Massachusetts. On the last day of school, she runs away with her 30-year-old teacher, William, and settles in a hillside shack in rural Pennsylvania, near his new teaching job. Though Lucy feels increasingly isolated, William won’t allow her any outlet. Leavitt draws upon a real-life crime that involved a girl she knew in high school. She tells her story from multiple viewpoints, building tension and empathy for Lucy and Charlotte as tragedy swallows them.
Steven Price
By Gaslight
Price, an award-winning Canadian poet, achieves an extraordinary achievement of Dickensian storytelling in his weighty second novel. His hero is William Pinkerton, son of the founder of the legendary detective agency, who finds clues in his late father’s safe to the case of William Shade. This mythic thief had disturbed and upset his father. William tracks a Shade accomplice(共犯), Charlotte Reckitt, to London, only to find she’s been found dead in the Thames. Also on the scene is Adam Foole, who is obsessed with Charlotte, who he met while stealing De Beers diamonds from a South African mine. Price ably arranges dozens of interlinking plotlines as he spans three continents and several decades, from American Civil War battlefields to Scotland Yard at the end of the 19th Century.
GeFei
The Invisibility Cloak
Beijing-based GeFei (pen name for Liu Yong) won the 2015 Mao Dun Literature Prize for fiction “describing the changing spirit of Chinese society” over the past century. The Invisibility Cloak, his first English publication, revolves around Cui, a divorced man who creates customized hi-fi speakers for Beijing’s newly wealthy and a few intellectuals. Beijing’s rapid expansion has left Cui longing for an invisible life away from the city. His chance comes when he agrees to build a world-class sound system for a gangster(黑社会老大). GeFei’s nice irony, translated from the Chinese by Canaan Morse, should find many fans.
Tim Harford
Messy
The temptation to be neat and tidy may be powerful, but “we would be better served by embracing a degree of mess,” Harford argues. His defense of the creative potential of the imperfect, crude, random, vague, difficult, diverse and even dirty is refreshing. Reaching into the arts, politics, business, science and technology, Harford makes a compelling case for opening up to disorder and luck.
60. Which author does NOT tell a story in his / her work listed above?
A. Caroline Leavitt B. Steven Price
C. GeFei D. Tim Harford
61. Jack is an American who would like everything to be neat and tidy. He loves reading novels with ironic humor and detective stories. He is going to work and live in Beijing for the next three years, and he is very curious about the place he is soon heading to. Which book will he most likely choose to read now?
A. Cruel Beautiful World B. By Gaslight
C. The Invisibility Cloak D. Messy

Far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity (阳刚) in which students either sink or swim, the absence of girls gives boys the chance to develop without pressure to conform (符合) to a stereotype, a US study says. Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to conform to the “boy code” of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”.
The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.
Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being faded by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls. The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when their female peers do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.
But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys’ learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study’s author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia.
Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with specifically “boy-focused” approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given “hands-on” lessons where they are allowed to walk around. “Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine (女性的) and prefer the modern style in which violence and sexism are major themes,” James wrote.
Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to conform to a stereotype that men should be “masterful and in charge” in relationships. “In mixed schools boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means,” the study reported.
63. What does Tony Little say about the British education system?
A. It makes girls less emotional than boys.
B. It fails more boys than girls academically.
C. It fails to give boys the attention they need.
D. It places more pressure on boys than on girls.
64. According to Abigail James, boys perform better in single-sex schools because ________.
A. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in
B. boys focus more on their lessons without being disturbed
C. teaching quality is relatively higher than in mixed schools
D. teaching can be designed to suit the characteristics of boys
65. Which of the following is NOT characteristic of boys?
A. Boys have sharper vision. B. Boys enjoy being in charge.
C. Boys like “hands-on” lessons. D. Boys prefer physical activities.
66. What is mainly discussed in the passage?
A. Problems boys may have in mixed schools.
B. Boys’ physical and mental growth in school.
C. Advantages of single-sex education for boys.
D. Boys’ disadvantages over girls in mixed schools.

Help migrant workers
There is nothing like going home. More so if it is for the Spring Festival family reunion. For a migrant worker it perhaps means even more. To be able to set out on a homeward journey with money from a year’s toil in his pocket is the best thing he can think of. Unfortunately, weeks preceding the Spring Festival have turned out to be hard times for migrant workers.
About 200 million migrant workers nationwide are something left behind by economic reforms and opening up due to their contributions in the past three decades. It is almost impossible to imagine life in these places without them. However, they still form a disadvantaged group. Their rights are violated in different forms. Among other things, unpaid salaries are the most painful of such violations that are likely to drive a migrant worker to desperate actions. Some have repeatedly climbed up chimneys threatening to jump to their death unless they get their defaulted salaries.
Objectively speaking, governments at various levels have done a great deal in helping these workers recover their defaulted salaries. They have taken measures to prevent employers from holding back payments to them. Yet, as the financial crisis bites deep, some small enterprises that are struck the most try to reduce their economic losses by laying off migrant workers or refusing to pay them. So it is particularly important for governments at all levels to do an even better job in helping villager-turned workers recover their unpaid salaries before the Spring Festival.
It is good news that quite a number of local governments have organized special task forces to conduct inspections in those labor-intensive enterprises to make sure they have paid their migrant workers in a timely manner. Construction commissions in almost all provinces have published hot lines for farmer-turned constructions workers to lodge complaints against their employers for withholding their salaries. Hopefully, these efforts will send more workers on a happy journey home for the Spring Festival with their salaries in their pockets. But we need to look for solutions that will work at all times. We need to put in place a mechanism that will effectively prevent employers from holding back salaries to workers.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Hearing that a photography section, scheduled to be added to our school English newspapers to present photography works from students, is seeking advice from the whole school, I am writing to recommend the theme of “People around me”. The reasons are as follows.
On one hand, society is an encyclopedia, which appeals to all of us students to explore. So, “People around me”, featuring the photos of people from all walks of life, will enable us to gain a deeper insight into the happiness and sorrows of others, enriching our life experience. On the other hand, ordinary as the majority might be, they are making great difference to our lives, for example, those heroes in harm’s way serving our community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their sense of responsibility and spirit of commitment will impress us students on campus, spurring us to respect them and learn from them, thus cultivating our good moral sentiment. To sum up, the theme is worth presenting.
I would appreciate it if you could consider my recommendation. Looking forward to the photography section early.
Yours,
Li Ming

The word“university”comes from the Latin word “universitas", meaning “ the whole ".Later, in Latin legal
language.“universitas” meant a society or corporation. In the Middle Ages, the word meant “an association of teachers and scholars".The origins of universities can go back to the 12th to 14th centuries. In the early 12th century, long before universities were organized in the modern sense. students gathered together for higher studies at certain centers of leaning. The earliest centers in the Europe were in Italy. founded in 1088. Other early centers were set up in France. Austria and Germany from 1150 to 1386. The first universities in Britain were Oxford and Cambridge. They were established in 1185 and 1209 respectively. The famous London University founded in 1836. This was followed by the foundation of several universities such as Manchester and Birmingham which developed from provincial colleges. It was in the 1960’s that the largest expansion of higher education took place in Britain. This expansion took 3 basic forms:existing universities were enlarged, new universities were developed from existing colleges and completely new universities were set up. In Britain, finance for universities comes from three sources:the first, and the largest source, is money from the government, the second source is fees paid by students and the third one is private donations.

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
Reducing the amount of sleep students get at night has a direct impact on their performance at school d the day. According to classroom teachers. elementary and middle school students who stay up late have more learning and attention problems. This has been shown by Brown Medical School and Bradley Hospital research. In the study teachers were not told the amount of sleep students received when completing weekly performance reports,, yet they rated the students who had received eight hours or less as having the most trouble recalling all the materials, leaning new lessons and completing high-quality work. Teachers also reported that these students had more difficulty paying attention. The experiment is the first to ask teachers to report about the effects of the lack of sleep on children. Just staying up late can cause increased academic difficulty and attention problems for otherwise healthy, while functioning kids, said Smith Forlone, the study’s lead author. So the results provide professionals and parents with a clear message: when a child is having learning and attention problems, the issue of sleep has t be taken into consideration. “If we don’t ask about sleep, and try to improve sleep patterns in kid’s struggling academically, then we aren’t doing our job,”Forlone said. For parents, he said the message is simple, getting kids to bed on time is as important as getting them to school on time."
