    Four famous British film locations
American and Canadian visitors to Britain are usually never quite as interested in film sites as British tourism folks seem to expect. For classic film lovers, however, Britain hardly lacks memorable film locations. Here is a great selection of recognizable locations from some of our favorite films.
    Castle Howard, Yorkshire
Brideshead Revisited put Castle Howard on the map. The Yorkshire estate is a wonderful visit, virtually unchanged since the filming of Evelyn Waugh’s classic there in 1980. You can easily see Charles Ryder and Sebastian Flyte rowing on the lake. It’s an easy drive, or bus ride, east from York.
    Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
There are many scenes from Cambridge recognizable from the Academy Award-winning Chariots of Fire. Perhaps none are as memorable as the race Harold Abrahams and Lord Lynley run against the clock around Trinity College Great Court. Visit Gonville& Caius College and King’s College Chapel as well.
    Dorchester, Dorset
So much of the surrounding countryside is recognizable as “Thomas Hardy country”. Dorchester itself, though, is Casterbridge played out in The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, and Far from the Madding Crowd. You almost expect to see Alan Bates or Julie Christie walking along Corn Street.
    Castle Combe, Wiltshire
Long termed “the prettiest village in England”, Castle Combe just might be. The southern Cotswold village near Chippenham has been a film setmany times, perhaps most famously with Rex Harrison in Doctor Doolittle (1967).
    1. Who is one character of Evelyn Waugh’s work?
    A. Sebastian Flyte. B. Julie Christie. C. Harold Abrahams. D. Rex Harrison.
    2. What makes Dorchester famous?
    A. Com Street. B. Its unusual location.
    C. Thomas Hardy’s works. D. Its surrounding scenery.
    3. Which film was set in the southern Cotswold village?
    A. Brideshead Revisited.
    B. Chariots of Fire.
    C. Doctor Doolittle.
    D. Far from the Madding Crowd.

    B
There once lived a woman who had been blind for decades. Then one day she found a doctor who treated the woman with a new device she had invented called the Laserphaco Probe. For the first time in over 30 years, the woman could regain her eyesight. The doctor responsible for this life-changing surgery was called Dr. Patricia E. Bath.
Dr. Bath was an American ophthalmologist (眼科医生), researcher, and an advocate for the prevention, treatment, and cure of blindness. She had an interest in science and medicine from a young age, which she said was first evoked by a chemistry kit her mother had bought for her when she was young.
During a fellowship at Columbia University, Dr. Bath realized that African Americans were twice as likely to suffer from blindness than other patients she attended to. This observation led to her development of a community ophthalmology system, which increased the amount of eye care given to underserved communities. This allowed thousands of people to get early preventative care for conditions that would have otherwise been untreated saving the eyesight of many.
Dr. Bath invented the new technique to remove cataracts(白内障)by the Laserphaco Probe. This technique is still used around the world, and it has allowed doctors to restore patients’ eyesight in a more precise, and less painful, manner than techniques before it.
Cataracts develop as people age. They form when the proteins in the lens(晶状体)of the eye break down, making the lens cloudy. This can significantly affect vision. Traditional cataract surgery involved removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial lens. However, this surgery was not always successful, and could be quite painful. Dr. Bath succeeded in solving the problem.
Dr. Bath made innovative contributions to the field of medicine which had long-lasting impacts on the communities she served.
    4. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “evoked” in paragraph 2?
    A. Displayed.
    B. Stimulated.
    C. Discovered.
    D. Maintained.
    5. Why did Dr. Bath create a community ophthalmology system?
    A. To offer eye care treatment to the poor.
    B. To help the blind regain their eyesight.
    C. To provide eye surgery for African Americans.
    D. To give real medical care to blind people.
    6. What can we say about Dr. Bath’s device?
    A. It prevents proteins in the lens breaking down.
    B. It needs to be advertised around the world.
    C. It helps patients avoid getting cataracts.
    D. It makes cataract surgery better than before.
    7. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Meet a woman who improved vision for millions
    B. Admire an inventor who changed the face of science
    C. Recommend a doctor who had various medical skills
    D. Remember a researcher who was an advocate for the poor
B 5. A 6. D 7. A
根据划线词前的“She had an interest in science and medicine from a young age.(她从小就对科学和医学感兴趣。)”
根据第三段中的“During a fellowship at Columbia University, Dr. Bath realized that African Americans were twice as likely to suffer from blindness than other patients she attended to. This observation led to her development of a community ophthalmology system, which increased the amount of eye care given to underserved communities. This allowed thousands of people to get early preventative care for conditions that would have otherwise been untreated saving the eyesight of many.(在哥伦比亚大学做研究员期间,巴斯博士意识到,非裔美国人患失明的可能性是她所照顾的其他患者的两倍。 故选A。
Bath also invented a new technique to remove cataracts by the Laserphaco Probe, it has allowed doctors to restore patients eyesight in a more precise, and less painful manner than techniques before it. (巴斯博士还发明了一种用激光探针去除白内障的新技术,与之前的技术相比,它可以让医生以更精确、更少痛苦的方式恢复病人的视力。)”以及第五段中的“However, this surgery was not always successful, and could be quite painful. Dr. Bath succeeded in solving the problem. (传统白内障手术并不总是成功,而且可能非常痛苦。巴斯博士成功地解决了这个问题。)”可知,传统的白内障手术并不总能成功,而且可能是相当痛苦的。与之相比,Bath 发明的激光探针去除白内障的技术使医生能够以一种更精确、不那么痛苦的方式恢复病人的视力。由此可推知,Bath的发明改善了白内障手术。故选D。
    【7题详解】
标题判断题。根据文章第一段的“The doctor responsible for this life-changing surgery was called Dr. Patricia E. Bath.(负责这个改变人生的手术的医生叫帕特里夏·巴斯医生。)” Bath was an American ophthalmologist (眼科医生), researcher, and an advocate for the prevention, treatment, and cure of blindness. (巴斯博士是一位美国眼科医生、研究人员,也是预防、治疗和治愈失明的倡导者。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了美国的 Patricia E.Bath在眼科领域的巨大贡献,她建立了社区眼科系统没,发明了改善白内障的手术,改善了数百万人的视力。因此推断A项“结识一位改善数百万人视力的女士”为最佳标题。故选A。
    C
A pair of businessmen are attempting to start a new human spaceflight company that, instead of launching rockets, will lift civilian passengers into the sky tied to a high-performance balloon.
Space Perspective aims to carry a capsule of eight passengers at a time, hanging from a balloon, 100, 000 feet above Earth. The balloon and capsule will gently rise for about two hours at 12 mph, floating along for another two hours as passengers enjoy refreshments and a view of the Earth below, and then descend back down at 12 mph and land in either the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean.
The goal is to make the flights as accessible and affordable to as many people as possible, one day possibly hosting weddings. Co-founders Jane Poynter and Taber MacCallum, who are married, said they expect prices to be around $125, 000 for a single ticket. “Everybody should be able to see the Earth from space, “ Poynter said. “We want them to really be able to experience what astronauts talk about, looking down at the Earth in that blackness of outer space. ”
But passenger flights are still some time away.
Hoping to perform its first test flight in early 2023, Space Perspective joins the groups of developing companies working to create an industry that can send paying passengers to the edges of space, generally thought to begin about 50 miles off Earth’s surface. Space Perspective’s balloon will reach about 20 miles.
Passengers will need very little training before taking a ride with Space Perspective, MacCallum said. During the flight, the inside of the capsule will be pressurized, and temperature will be controlled. Onboard there will be a pilot, paired with another down on Earth, who can also control the craft. A new balloon, which will be filled with hydrogen, will be used for each flight and materials from it recycled. The capsule will be able to be reused on many missions.
Presentations of the spacecraft, to be named Spaceship Neptune, show a large capsule with a circle of seats facing out to a row of windows. Poynter and MacCallum said a bar, a bathroom and an clear windowed roof at the top of the capsule will be combined into the design.
    8. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “descend" in Paragraph 2?
    A. Decrease.
    B. Sink.
    C. Dive.
    D. Fall.
    9. Which of the following best describes the spaceflight according to the Co-founders?
    A. Challenging.
    B. Mysterious.
    C. Sustainable.
    D. Cheap.
    10. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. Space Perspective plans to fly passengers in early 2023.
    B. Space Perspective enables everybody to see the Earth above.
    C. Space Perspective is to reuse the balloon and the capsule.
    D. Space Perspective intends to transport common people into sky.
    11. What is the purpose of the text?
    A. To advertise a service.
    B. To present a scene.
    C. To introduce a project.
    D. To share an adventure.
D 9. D 10. D 11. C

Quantum ( 量子 ) computers have been on my mind a lot lately. A friend has been sending me articles on how quantum computers might help solve some of the biggest challenges we face as humans. I’ve also had exchanges with two quantum-computing experts. One is computer scientist Chris Johnson who I see as someone who helps keep the field honest. The other is physicist Philip Taylor.
For decades, quantum computing has been little more than a laboratory curiosity. Now, big tech companies have invested in quantum computing, as have many smaller ones. According to Business Weekly, quantum machines could help us “cure cancer, and even take steps to turn climate change in the opposite direction.” This is the sort of hype ( 炒作 ) that annoys Johnson. He worries that researchers are making promises they can’t keep. “What’s new,” Johnson wrote, “is that millions of dollars are now potentially available to quantum computing researchers.”
As quantum computing attracts more attention and funding, researchers may mislead investors, journalists, the public and, worst of all, themselves about their work’s potential. If researchers can’t keep their promises, excitement might give way to doubt, disappointment and anger, Johnson warns. Lots of other technologies have gone through stages of excitement. But something about quantum computing makes it especially prone to hype, Johnson suggests, perhaps because “‘quantum’ stands for something cool you shouldn’t be able to understand.” And that brings me back to Taylor, who suggested that I read his book Q for Quantum.
After I read the book, Taylor patiently answered my questions about it. He also answered my questions about PyQuantum, the firm he co-founded in 2016. Taylor shares Johnson’s concerns about hype, but he says those concerns do not apply to PyQuantum.
The company, he says, is closer than any other firm “by a very large margin ( 幅度 )” to building a “useful” quantum computer, one that “solves an impactful problem that we would not have been able to solve otherwise.” He adds, “People will naturally discount my opinions, but I have spent a lot of time quantitatively comparing what we are doing with others.”
Could PyQuantum really be leading all the competition “by a wide margin”, as Taylor claims? I don’t know. I’m certainly not going to advise my friend or anyone else to invest in quantum computers. But I trust Taylor, just as I trust Johnson.
    12. Regarding Johnson’s concerns, the author feels ________.
    A. sympathetic B. unconcerned C. doubtful D. excited
    13. What leads to Taylor’s optimism about quantum computing?
    A. His dominance in physics. B. The competition in the field.
    C. His confidence in PyQuantum. D. The investment of tech companies.
    14. What does the underlined word “prone” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
    A. Open. B. Cool. C. Useful. D. Resistant.
    15. Which would be the best title for the passage?
    A. Is Johnson More Competent Than Taylor?
    B. Is Quantum Computing Redefining Technology?
    C. Will Quantum Computers Ever Come into Being?
    D. Will Quantum Computing Ever Live Up to Its Hype?
A 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第三自然段“As quantum computing attracts more attention and funding, researchers may mislead investors, journalists, the public and, worst of all, themselves about their work’s potential. If researchers can’t keep their promises, excitement might give way to doubt, disappointment and anger, Johnson warns. 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“The company, he says, is closer than any other firm “by a very large margin ( 幅度 )” to building a “useful” quantum computer, one that “solves an impactful problem that we would not have been able to solve otherwise.” He adds, “People will naturally discount my opinions, but I have spent a lot of time quantitatively comparing what we are doing with others.”( 他说,这家公司比其他任何公司都“在很大程度上”接近于制造出“有用的”量子计算机,它“解决了一个有影响力的问题,否则我们无法解决这个问题”。他补充说:“人们自然会不相信我的观点,但我已经花了很多时间来定量地比较我们与他人的做法)”可知,泰勒对量子计算的乐观来源于他对PyQuantum的信心。故选C。
    【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三自然段“But something about quantum computing makes it especially prone to hype, Johnson suggests, perhaps because “‘quantum’ stands for something cool you shouldn’t be able to understand.”( 但约翰逊表明,量子计算的某些方面使得它特别 prone被炒作,可能是因为“量子”代表了一些你不应该理解的酷东西。”)” A. Open. Cool. 酷的;C. Useful. 有用的;D. Resistant. 故选A。
根据第二自然段“Now, big tech companies have invested in quantum computing, as have many smaller ones. According to Business Weekly, quantum machines could help us “cure cancer, and even take steps to turn climate change in the opposite direction. This is the sort of hype ( 炒作 ) that annoys Johnson.”( 现在,大型科技公司和许多小型公司都在量子计算领域进行了投资。据《商业周刊》报道,量子机器可以帮助我们“治愈癌症,甚至采取措施将气候变化转向相反的方向。这种炒作让约翰逊感到恼火。”)”以及最后一段“Could PyQuantum really be leading all the competition “by a wide margin”, as Taylor claims? I don’t know. I’m certainly not going to advise my friend or anyone else to invest in quantum computers.(PyQuantum真的能像泰勒所说的那样“以巨大的优势”领先所有竞争对手吗?我不知道。我当然不会建议我的朋友或其他人投资量子计算机。但我信任泰勒,就像我信任约翰逊一样。)”可知,本文主要论述了“量子计算真的会像它的宣传那样成功吗?”,计算机科学家克里斯·约翰逊和物理学家菲利普·泰勒分别阐明了自己的观点。所以短文的最佳标题为“量子计算真的会像它的宣传那样成功吗?”。故选D。

后一句“It teaches responsibility, reduce the risk of allergies and encourage exercise according to the recent research.”(根据最近的研究,它教授责任心,减少过敏的风险,并鼓励锻炼。)

My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass (超过) anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone (长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb’s-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, “A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.
    注意:
    1.所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1:
When I bought my paycheck home — it was $119 — my dad wanted to talk to me.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
I was surprised that my dad allowed me to use the money as I wished.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I brought my payback home — it was $119 — my dad wanted to talk to me. He told me to wait in the living room for a while. Silence reigned in the room. I sat on the sofa, eyes glued to the money I earned. I kept digging in my mind for words to argue with dad if he announced that the money wasn’t mine. Just then, the door opened and in came my dad. The moment he sat down beside me, I gripped the paycheck more firmly, ready to argue. However, he gently placed his right hand on my shoulder and said, “I know you have grown up a lot through your work …” Then there was a long pause. He withdrew his hand and slowly continued, “You deserve the money and the money is yours now.”
I was surprised that my dad allowed to use the money as I wished. In the blink of an eye, numerous fun activities I could do presented themselves to me. I sprang to my feet and kept jumping, still wild with joy and astonishment. On that day, after calculating my budget, I went to the local store and bought many things I wanted — a new football, a baseball bat and a pair of sneakers and so on. Better yet, the idea of giving back to the farmer and working more popped into my mind. At exactly that moment, I realized why my father let me have the money — it was his expectation for my future, his encouragement and quiet love. And that was something I might never surpass.
