Caterpillars (毛毛虫) are entry-level animals. If you live somewhere where grass grows, they’re there, kid-size and kid-friendly. And they are searchable: as long as you have access to a tree and have enough patience, you will find them.
But I didn’t. I grew up around concrete in New York City, a place that isn’t treeless, but it’s
entirely possible to forget things such as the existence of trees. I didn’t remember ever meeting, let alone discovering an actual caterpillar. But I did know one. He was the very hungry caterpillar.
Everyone I knew knew the very hungry caterpillar, the star of Eric Carle’s award-winning
picture book. Carle, who died at 91, introduced him in 1969; by the time I was first discovering the book in the late 1980s, I had been in the second generation of kids to meet him. In Carle’s collages (拼贴画), he was blank-eyed but beautiful.
The caterpillar doesn’t have a name; he just has a hunger for food. The journey of the book takes him through the colorful products of the human world. After an initial bite of an apple, a snack you might find in the forest, he moves on to the glories of civilization: a piece of Swiss
cheese, a slice of salami (意大利香肠), a chocolate cake ... For a kid, these are the wonders of
    the world.
In an interview, Carle said, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a book of hope. You can also grow up and grow wings.” Look at that: We did! We were hungry; we were curious; we took pleasure in exploring; we appreciated. Last week, my good friend’s baby turned 1. I sent him this book. He lives in Vermont, so he can know caterpillars from trees. But has he met salami?
    24. What does the author mean by saying “I didn’t” in Paragraph 2?
    A. She wasn’t able to get close to nature.
    B. She was unable to have access to actual trees.
    C. She failed to meet and discover a real caterpillar.
    D. She didn’t have the patience to search for a caterpillar.
    25. What do we know about The Very Hungry Caterpillar?
    A. It has deeply affected two generations so far.
    B. It mainly tells a story about a curious writer.
    C. It was well received by those around the author.
    第 4 页 共 11 页
    D. It became available to the public in the late 1960s.
    26. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 4?
    A. Give a brief description of the book.
    B. Introduce a new topic for discussion.
    C. Summarize the previous paragraphs.
    D. Add some background information.
    27. Why did the author send the picture book to her friend’s baby?
    A. To assist him in knowing more of salami.
    B. To help him to explore the outside world.
    C. To arouse the baby’s curiosity about Italy.
    D. To inspire him to have a sense of adventure.
    C
Ten years ago, when Benjamin Choi was in third grade, he watched a documentary about a mind-controlled prosthesis (假肢). Researchers placed tiny sensors into the motor cortex (运动 皮层) of the brain of a patient who moved a robotic arm using only her thoughts.
“I was completely captivated by the concept then. To me, it’s like what happened in Star Wars has become a reality,” he says. “But I was also alarmed that they require this really risky open brain surgery. And they’re so inaccessible, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
Years later, when the pandemic hit in 2020, Choi — a tenth grader living in Virginia —
suddenly found himself with enough free time. And the documentary he had seen years earlier stuck with him, and he decided to use his spare time to build a less-invasive prosthetic arm himself.
In his makeshift laboratory on the ping-pong table in the basement, Choi independently
designed the first version of his robotic arm using his sister’s $75 3-D printer and some fishing lines. The printer couldn’t build pieces over 4.7 inches in length, so Choi printed the arm in tiny
pieces and bolted and rubber banded it together. In total, it took about 30 hours to print. This
version worked using brain wave data and head gestures, and Choi posted instructions online for anyone to build their own.
Starting in ninth grade, Choi taught himself the computer programming languages Python
and C++ by watching videos on Stack Overflow, a website for programmers. He has also gained rich experience in robot manufacturing through participating in competitions at different levels from middle school level to the world championships.
After more than seventy-five designs, Choi’s non-invasive, mindcontrolled robotic arm is
now made from engineering-grade materials able to bear weights up to about four tons. It operates using an algorithm driven by artificial intelligence (A.I.) that interprets a user’s brain waves. And it only costs around $300 to manufacture — a huge savings compared to what’s currently on the market. This prosthesis, paired with a surgery to reroute nerves that once controlled the arm, allows patients to command the limb with their thoughts and even feel texture (质地) through it.
    第 5 页 共 11 页
The invention earned Choi, now a 17-year-old senior at the Potomac School in Virginia, a
spot in the top 40 finalists of this year’s Regeneron Science Talent Search, the country’s oldest and most well-known science and math competition for high school seniors.
    28. What does the underlined word “captivated” in Paragraph 2 probably
    mean?
    A. Puzzled. B. Frightened. C. Fascinated. D. Defeated.
    29. What did Choi realize after watching the documentary ten years ago?
    A. The mind-control technology made a Star Wars movie possible.
    B. Many patients had doubts about the mind-control technology.
    C. The mind-control technology was intended to help poor people.
    D. There were some problems in applying the mind-control technology.
    30. What can we learn about the first robotic arm designed by Choi?
    A. It helped Choi make a big profit.
    B. It was based on online instructions.
    C. It was to be controlled by hand gestures.
    D. It was pieced together due to some limitations.
    31. What can we learn about Choi from Paragraph 5?
    A. He dreams of becoming a world champion.
    B. He was well equipped to design the invention.
    C. He managed to set up a website for programmers.
    D. He experienced many failures before his final success
    D
As a permaculture designer (朴门永续设计师) and consultant, I have been involved with a range of ecosystem restoration projects. These include both small-scale and landscape-scale projects to repair damage to degraded environments, boost biodiversity, and build toward a better future.
It is clear to me, as it will no doubt be clear to readers, that ecosystem restoration is crucial.
As we seek to ease and adapt to climate change, and work to reverse (逆转) biodiversity losses, restoration is an important part of the global solution. But while it is widely understood that
ecosystem restoration is the right thing to do, there is far less understanding about what exactly it
means, and how it is to be achieved.
One of the most obvious misunderstandings about ecosystem restoration is that it is all about action, especially planting trees. It is important to understand that forest and woodland ecosystems are not the only crucial environments to restore. Ecosystem restoration consists of a huge range of different systems from farmland soils and grassland systems to our seas and oceans.
Ecosystem restoration is not always about actively intervening (干预). In many instances,
passive intervention can be just as effective, if not more so, than active. This involves simply letting nature take the reins (掌管). In short, in ecosystem restoration, what we don’t do can be
    第 6 页 共 11 页
as important as what we do. Often nature already has the answers. But there are situations in which humans have damaged the environment to such a degree that natural restoration is impossible. This is when carefully designed action is required.
Another key thing to remember is that we cannot succeed in ecosystem restoration without
local people’s involvement or, ideally, their leadership. When a community feels a sense of belonging and a deep connection with the land, this provides a firm foundation for future conservation and restoration work.
While I dislike taking an overly human-centered view, environmental issues cannot be
separated in our complex modern world from socio-economic ones. We need to look at people and the planet as a whole and appreciate the complex web of human life and its interaction with the natural world in order to form practical restoration solutions. It is important to understand
how nature can boom and still provide humans with the things we need. It is only when we
consider the natural environment and human society as interconnected that we can really continue to make progress.
    32. Which shows the proper understanding of ecosystem restoration?
    A. Community-led efforts should be reduced.
    B. Ecosystem restoration involves a variety of systems.
    C. Direct action on forest ecosystems should be avoided.
    D. The more trees we plant, the better the ecosystems will be.
    33. In what case is active intervention a must?
    A. Nature fails to restore itself to health.
    B. The cost of passive intervention is high.
    C. A large population relies on natural resources.
    D. Active intervention can improve the local economy.
    34. According to the last paragraph, what should be done to make practical restoration plans?
    A. Focusing on the interests of us humans.
    B. Making nature conservation a top priority.
    C. Conducting a survey of local natural resources.
    D. Taking both social factors and nature into account.
    35. What is mainly talked about in the text?
    A. How people can benefit from ecosystem restoration.
    B. What challenge people face in ecosystem restoration.
    C. How we can repair damaged ecosystems more effectively.
    D. Why ecosystem restoration becomes increasingly urgent.

During job or school interviews, you’re likely to be asked what your strengths and weaknesses are, because the interviewers are interested in how your areas of strengths and
weaknesses might affect your performance in this position. 36 For instance, you may be
skilled in cooking, but if you’re applying for an office job, this strength may be irrelevant.
However, knowing your personal areas of strengths and weaknesses is not a piece of cake.
It takes self-awareness and self-reflection. 37 Or, ask some of your friends what they
see as your best qualities or shortcomings.
38 For example, let’s say my strength is creativity and yours is planning; we both
want to have the same career. We might go about getting there in very different ways. If I did
something creative to get my dream job and you planned carefully, we’d both likely be
successful. But if I tried planning and you tried something creative, both of us might fail. 39
Having a weakness doesn’t have to be a bad thing. It could be something you struggle with,
but it could also be something you haven’t spent time developing yet. 40 For example,
maybe your area of weakness is relevant to gratitude. You just haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about gratitude before. But now you engage in a bunch of activities that help you turn gratitude into an area of strength. Hey, now you’ve got one more skill!
    A. Is it proper to begin with a truthful answer?
    B. So ask yourself what you are good or weak at.
    C. Our areas of strengths can help us achieve our goals.
    D. Thus, it’s helpful to know your strengths related to the role.
    E. Many job applicants are unsure how to approach this question.
    F. By turning a weakness into a strength, you build other important skills.
    G. That’s why it is important to know and use our strengths to reach goals.

Rhonda froze as she heard her four-year-old daughter, Desiree, sobbing quietly in her room. Rhonda felt a sense of despair. It had been hard enough to cope with her husband Ken Gill’s death, but her daughter’s grief was more than she could bear. Instead of gradually adjusting to her father’s death, Desiree refused to accept it. “Daddy will be home soon,” she’d tell her mother. “He’s at work.”
“I just don’t know what to do,” Rhonda told her mother Trish. One evening Desiree said,
“November 8th will be Daddy’s birthday. How will I send him a card?” “How about if we tie a letter to a balloon,” Trish said, “and send it up to heaven?” Desiree’s eyes immediately lit up.
On their way to the cemetery (墓地) the next morning, the three stopped at a store. Desiree
picked out a balloon at the store. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY ” was printed on a drawing of Ariel from the film The Little Mermaid. Desiree and her father had watched it before.
Then Desiree said, “Tell him, ‘Happy birthday! I hope you can write to me on my birthday
in January.’” Trish wrote the message and their address on a piece of paper, which was then
wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of a string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree released the balloon.
On a cold November morning in eastern Canada, 32-year-old Wade MacKinnon, a forest
ranger, was driving. Wade went to Mermaid Lake and hiked past dripping spruce (云杉) and
pine and soon entered a cranberry bog (沼泽). Suddenly, something caught his eye. Curious, he approached to find a silver balloon. When he untangled the string, he found a piece of paper at the end of it, wrapped in plastic. At home, Wade showed the note to his wife Donna. “It’s awful

On Desiree’s fifth birthday, she received the package from the MacKinnons. She opened the package and found an adaptation of The Little Mermaid and a card. Trish read the letter to Desiree. “It all started in November when my husband, Wade, went outside and found a mermaid balloon that you sent to your daddy...” Trish paused. A tear began to trickle down Desiree’s cheek. “There are no stores in heaven, so your daddy picked us to do his shopping for him,” Trish continued. “I know your daddy would want you to be happy. I know he loves you very much. Lots of love, the MacKinnons.”
When Trish finished reading the letter from the MacKinnons, she looked at Desiree. “I knew Daddy would find a way not to forget me,” the child said. During the next few weeks, the MacKinnons and Desiree often telephoned. In the following months, whenever Desiree wanted to talk with her dad, she called the MacKinnons. They would talk to her and comfort her. Desiree understands now that although her father has passed away, she is still loved and cherished by many people.

    Text 4
W: I'm not sure what to take next semester The French film class is supposed to be a lot of fun, but French history would be better for my major.

    Text 5
W: Do you like the books of William Shakespeare? I've been reading Hamlet recently but I find it very difficult to read.

W: Wow, that is a big lighthouse.
M:⑦ That's the Mulantou Lighthouse. It's the tallest lighthouse in China, with a height of about 72 meters.
W: Lighthouses are very important public facilities, aren't they?
M: Of course.⑥They protect ships, like the one we are on, from danger. This lighthouse is very important here in Hainan.
W: It doesn't look very old.
M: In fact, it was built in 1995 and it has been protecting this dangerous water area called Mulan Bay since then.
⑦Public officials come to check it regularly, so it's kept well.

W: I'm really worried about the environment ⑥Too many people waste too many resources. They don't realize
how serious the problem is. Neither do they care.
M: In what way are they wasting resources?
W: Like using too much water. They leave the water on when they aren't using them.
M: Yes, that seems very common nowadays.
W: Exactly. I think people should be more aware of waste. The planet's resources aren't endless. We need to save them.
M: Maybe we should write a letter to the newspapers.
W:⑨ Or we post something about it on social media, so that more people can see it.

W: Joe, can you tell me what is happening tonight?⑪ As a Chinese person, I know nothing about Bonfire Night. M:⑩ Okay, tonight we need to go down to the Milage Green in time for the lighting of the bonfire about 7:15. At 7:45 the fireworks will go off and the crowds will cheer.
W: What is the Village Green?
M: It's an area of grass we have in this village. And events are sometimes held there.
W: Who has made the fire?
M: Lots of people give their spare wood. Sometimes children go round collecting it, so we can have a really big fire.
W: How many people does it take to organize this?
M:⑪ There are many volunteers. Sometimes schools are involved.
W: Is this about history or is it just to have fun?
M: Bonfire Night is about history. It all comes from history of England and the Houses of Parliament. But it is great fun, too-great fun to organize and great fun to watch.
    W: How did it start?
M: Four hundred years ago, a man called Guy Fawkes planned to kill King James I by blowing up the Houses of Parliament It was called the Gunpowder Plot.
    W: But it failed?
M: Yes, and every year since then, on November 5, models of Guy Fawkes have been burned on fires all over the country.

    M: I just found out that…oh, I can't believe this!
W: Look, no matter what happens, we'll face it together; okay?
M: That’s sweet. But it’s not bad news. Quite the opposite, actually.
W: What? I'm confused. Tell me what’s going on.
M: Tracy, I’ve just been offered a job in Paris.
W: What?⑭That's like 5000 miles away from Toronto! And I didn't even know you were looking for another job.
M: I wasn’t. I like my current position at Sydney Design. I just applied for this job because it looked like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.I didn't tell you because it seemed like my chance of actually getting it was one in a million.
W: Well, congratulations! But I'm not so sure we can move to another country.
M: Tracy, the position is Assistant Director of the European office. I’d be in charge of basically the whole company out there.
W: It sounds great, but are you sure we can afford to move and live there?
M: The job comes with a comer office, a car with a driver, and an apartment overlooking the Eiffiel lower. Plus, they'll cover all moving costs and pay for school for our kids.
