A
All of us spend a large part of our lives at home—eating, sleeping, relaxing and communicating with our family members. Our home is a shelter for us, away from the noisy, busy, and polluted world outside—a place where we can let down our hair and dress casually. Eco friendliness(环保) is a hot word today and we all know we should make our environment as eco friendly as possible. This is not only good for our health, but also good for the outward environment. Here are some easy and helpful tips to make your home eco friendly.
Kitchen
Plan the kitchen to be bright and airy so that you don't have to turn on the lights at daytime. Don't make wasteful use of the gas. Keep all ingredients for cooking ready before lighting the gas. Turn it to low when not required—always using it on "high" burns a lot of gas.
Indoor plants
Plants are extremely eco-friendly and can be used to make your home look lively. Apart from adding life to home, they give out O2, thus making the air inside fresh. You can keep plants in your home, but be sure to show them some sunlight regularly. Also, if they are kept outside, clean their leaves with a wet cloth, as dust may be added to them. A home decorated with plants looks attractive. Plants are a natural home decorating gift that shows concern about the environment. A green plant is a wonderful gift which will protect the earth and is sure to be appreciated.
Saving water
Most of the time, we take water for granted—we keep water running while brushing our teeth or washing clothes. Needless to say, this is a huge waste of natural resources. Try to recycle water. For example, the water used for washing vegetables can be used for watering plants; the soapy water used for washing clothes can be used to clean the bathroom and kitchen.
1.Why is the importance of our home discussed in Paragraph 1?
A.To advise us to communicate more with our family members.
B.To show the outside world is noisy and polluted.
C.To advise us to spend more time staying at home.
D.To show it's necessary to make our home eco-friendly.
2.What is advised to be done in the kitchen?
A.To open the window. B.To save energy.
C.To prepare simple meals. D.To turn down lights.
3.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.We don't use water frequently. B.We try our best not to waste water.
C.We don't realize the importance of water. D.We make full use of water.

17-year-old Dasia Taylor was named one of 40 finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), the nation's most famous Science and math competition for high school seniors.
Dasia's sutures (缝合线) work by changing color if the patients' pH level changes, indicating an infection. pH is one of the most common parts of wound healing, Dasia said. It changes very quickly, so it's one of the fastest ways to recognize infection.
So, she started experimenting with root vegetables. "I found that beet changed color at the perfect pH point," says Taylor. "That's perfect for an infected wound. And so, I was like, 'Oh, okay. So beet is where it's at'." Beet provided the perfect dye for her invention, changing from bright red to dark purple when a surgical wound becomes infected. After more than a year of research, Taylor is working on getting her sutures patented.
She imagines these sutures being used in developing countries where they can save lives and money. "The goal of my project is to reduce the number of deadly surgical site infections in developing countries because developing countries suffer from the most number of deaths due to surgical site infections," she said. "I was like there is no way that that should be happening. The equity part of my brain and all the work that I do around equity was like 'That shouldn't be happening. They should have the resources to save their citizens in their country.' So, my goal is to work on that and make sure that it can actually discover those types of infections and stuff." After graduation, Dasia hopes to attend Howard University, study political science and finally become a lawyer.
4.How can a patient quickly know if a wound is infected?
A.By observing the pH test paper.
B.Through the doctors' examination.
C.By looking at sutures' color changing.
D.By observing how the wound changes.
5.What did Dasia discover in her experiment?
A.Beet has the same pH level.
B.Beet can change color at different times.
C.Beet therapy is good for wound healing.
D.Beet can be used to help her with the invention.
6.What can we learn about Dasia?
A.She has won the invention patent.
B.She became the winner of the Regeneron STS.
C.She made contributions to surgical infection recognition.
D.She helped save lots of lives and money in developing countries.
7.What will Dasia's future career probably involve?
A.Medical and health work. B.Medical device development.
C.Something about the legal aid. D.Medical and science research.

A small but shining silver lining: The corona-virus has quickened the shift to pedal power in Europe. The German Cycling Association (ADFC) reports that Germans across the country are spending twice as much time biking as they were before the COVID-19. There is growing demand for bikes and shared-bike subscriptions, and now even shortages throughout bicycle supply chain. For bike shops it's an unexpected boom. So much so that it requires cities to improve their biking facilities.
In unimagined numbers, bikes are starting to take the place of cars in our cities. It has increased 930 miles of new bike lanes(车道) in Europe, "muscling aside cars on Europe's city streets," according to European Cyclists Federation. Belgium, Denmark, and the Netherlands are pioneering fast lanes for riders. "Pop-up lanes" are being used for bikes in Berlin and Paris; Rome has painted new bike lanes, in each case taking away lanes from cars.
Women riders are reportedly another big factor in the biking transformation. E-bikes are, too. E-bikes use an onboard battery to boost power when the rider is going up a hill, or just needs a rest. E-bikes have removed "the sweat factor." Who wants to show up to work or a party sweaty?
The European Cyclists' Federation states that bikes are also strongly supported by European governments to cut carbon and increase the quality of their cities. European countries provide direct financial stimulation for cyclists.
At the end of April, France announced a 20 million Euro plan to promote cycling after the end of the lockdown. The plan includes 50 Euro vouchers(代金券) for the repair of a bike. Italy worked on a regulation for Covid recovery, by means of which 120 million Euro was set aside to cover 70% and up to 500 Euro of the price of conventional, muscle-powered and electric bikes.
8.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The impact of the pandemic on people's life. B.The bicycle industry booms in Europe.
C.The preference for bicycles globally. D.The shift in choice on public transportation.
9.How many factors contribute to the growing demand for bikes in Europe?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
10.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Measures have been taken to encourage Europeans to use bikes.
B.E-bikes become popular with Europeans because they are lazy.
C.More women in Europe choose to go to work by bike than men.
D.Financial support is the main reason why Europeans choose bikes.
11.Where is the passage probably taken from?
A.a guidebook. B.a business plan.
C.a science report. D.a newspaper.

Britain's meat industry on Friday warned that an upcoming shortage of carbon dioxide(CO2) could cause massive disruption(中断) to food supplies within two weeks.
The gas is used to stun(昏迷) animals before being killed, in the vacuum packing of food products to extend their shelf life, and to put the fizz into beer, cider and soft drinks. It is also required for some medical procedures and used in the nuclear and semi-conductor industries.
Britain's food supply chain, already suffering from a severe shortage of heavy goods vehicles(HGV) drivers and the impact of Brexit and COVID-19, is heavily reliant on fertiliser producers for CO2 which is a by-product of their production process. However, two of the largest fertiliser producers, Norway's Yara YAR.OL and rival CF Industries Holdings CF.N, have restrained production due to a sudden increase in natural gas prices, which has in turn started to dry up CO2 supplies.
Nick Allen, chief executive of the British Meat Processors Association(BMPA), said that once current stocks of the gas run out, some meat companies will have to stop taking animals and close production lines, leading to a logjam of animals back to the farms. "We already have this situation in the pig industry which is now facing the disruption prospect of a humane killing on farms," he said. The BMPA is persuading Business Minister Kwasi Kwarteng to help support UK CO2 production in the short term.
"We are monitoring this situation closely and are in regular contact with the food and farming organizations and industry, to help them manage the current situation," said a UK government spokesperson. "The UK benefits from having access to highly diverse sources of gas supply to ensure households, businesses and heavy industry get the energy they need at a fair price."
12.What's the direct cause of the CO2 shortage this year?
A.A government policy. B.An infectious disease.
C.Transportation failure. D.Cost rise.
13.What does the underlined word "logjam" mean in paragraph 4?
A.Bottleneck. B.Promise. C.Failure. D.Recovery.
14.What measure may the UK government take?
A.To close production lines. B.To stop marketing animals.
C.To limit the drinks wholesale. D.To explore more gas supplies.
15.What may be the suitable title for the passage?
A.Diverse Applications of CO2 B.CO2 Shortage Hit Food Supplies
C.Efforts Taken to Produce CO2 D.The Future of Britain's Meat Industry

The carbon footprint shows how much carbon dioxide a person emits(排放)in everyday life. It measures the amount offossil(化石)fuels and electricity someone uses up as well as the carbon footprint of the products they buy. When we use our cars or heat our homes with carbon dioxide, various other gases are set free. 16_____
You can measure your carbon footprint by using a calculator that you can find on various websites. 17_____ In America for example, every citizen produces about 28 tons of carbon dioxide and other dangerous gases a year; in Great Britain the amount is about 10 tons.
18_____ The way we travel, for example, has a major effect on our environment. Use your bike or walk for short distances. Public transport is a way of getting to places without putting a burden on the environment. 19_____ Many environmental experts, however, argue that it often saves energy to buy food that is produced naturally in faraway places than consuming food grown locally in greenhouses. In your home you can contribute to saving energy by turning off lights if you don't need them or by avoiding the use of air conditioners. Recycling plastic glass and paper can also reduce your carbon footprint dramatically.
20_____ Only if we concentrate on reducing carbon emissions together can we hope to make our environment better.
A.Many people travel between cities and suburbs every day.
B.The carbon footprint is usually measured in tons of CO2 per year.
C.These emissions lead to a thicker atmosphere and global warming.
D.It is also vital to persuade others to take the same steps that you do.
E.There are many actions you can take to reduce your carbon footprint.
F.The websites also provide carbon storage tools and methods for individuals.
G.Buying local food is another way of restricting emission into the atmosphere.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A freezing downpour washed the street in front of the small-town bar. I sat gazing into the watery darkness, alone as usual. I had been in that old bar for half an hour, quietly drinking, when my thoughtful eyes finally focused on a medium-sized lump(一团) in a puddle(水洼) a hundred feet away. For another ten minutes, I looked out through the window trying to decide if the lump was an animal or just something.
The night before, a German dog named Shep had come into the bar begging for potato chips. He was starving and just the size of the lump in the puddle. Why should a dog lie in a cold puddle in the freezing rain? I asked myself. The answer was simple: Either it wasn't a dog, or it was, he was too weak to get up.
The wound in my right shoulder ached all the way down my fingers. I didn't want to go out in the storm. Hey, it wasn't my dog. It was just a stray on a cold rainy night, a lonely drifter(流浪者). So was I, I thought, as I tossed(扔) down what was left of my drink and headed out the door.
He was lying in the three inches of water. When I touched him, he didn't move. I thought he was dead. I put my hands around his chest and raised him to his feet. He stood unsteadily, and his head hung like a weight at the end of his neck. His floppy ears were just hairless pieces of flesh dotted with open sores(伤口).
"Come on, Shep," I said, leading him to a corner next to the bar, where he lay on the cold cement and closed his eyes. A block away I could see the lights of a late-night convenience store. It was still open. I bought three cans of dog food and fed him. He couldn't swallow but poorly look at me. He was dying!

答案:
The local vet was still at his office, so I loaded the poor creature into a taxi and headed there. After a quick check on the poor dog, the vet shook his head with regret. He promised me he would try his utmost but Shep was unlikely to get through it unless there is a miracle. While the vet treated the sores carefully, I tried to drop water in his mouth and fed him with food bit by bit. I never gave up hope of getting him saved. Many times I would caress his neck, whispering into his ears to encourage him to hold on. He was so weak that he had to stay in the vet's.
Three days later, when I opened the door of the vet's, Shep welcomed me with wild enthusiasm. He wagged his tail from left to right as if to say "Thank you". He was gaining strength and improving for the better. Tears filling my eyes, I knew all our efforts were worthwhile. Soon, the dog recovered from severe sores and I adopted him and took him home. Once in a while, I would go to that bar with Shep, a drink for myself and a serve of potato chips for him. What would have happened if I hadn't stepped out on that stormy night? Care and kindness really made a difference, to both of us.
